If you could buy a new exotic, would you?
Would you buy a Ferrari, Lambo, McLaren, or similar if you had the money. I don't mean you're a billionaire. I mean you can afford it without destroying your future.
Here's my dream car: https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds...i/2098032.html Only 300k. Yikes! |
If I could afford it? Hell yeah!
But it'd be something relatively modest. Lotus Evora, Porsche Cayman, Lexus LC, etc. |
lol if I could afford a LFA or Carrera GT, I would own one & daily it in a heartbeat ^^

Nope. There are too many cars that I like that make much more sense.
|
I'd build an ultralight helicopter first.
|
I'd buy a used IndyCar first.
Megafast street cars don't make much sense. And there are much better and cheaper ways to go way faster at the track... Love the 512BB! But that dashboard looks like it came out of a Fiero :D |
Nah. Cars made after 1995 are exotic enough.

No. Only if I had tons of money, with like a Carleone lake side vacation house, and shower girls, like in Coming to America. My wife already said if we ever get that kind of money, I can have shower girls.
Since I'm on a fixed income now, I don't see that happening. Come on Power Ball. |

What I do is buy HotWheels and cheapo die-cast metal cars in WalMart, CVS, wherever I see 'em. WAY cheaper, you get to have the 3 dimensional thing to enjoy, and no hearbreak of learning that the cars you idolized so much were actually super-expensive pieces of crap!
I bought a Fairlady Z 432 and a '69 Corvette ZL-1 in ~1/24ish scale at WalMart last week. Somebody knows what they are doing, those are two relatively obscure cars but there they were for like $18 and I had to have 'em... |
Sure, why not if I could afford it. Price is relative.

Would you count an R34 Z-Tune in this?

All of the Porsche GT products are superb. Outside of that, I’d love a 458 speciale.

No, I don't see the the point of having a street car that fast. Even driving something like a Z06 feels painfully boring unless you're doing something that would get you thrown in jail. Even if I had a billion dollars I wouldn't go beyond something like a M3 or 911.
If money was really no object, I would buy a 250GTO and keep it in my living room to stare at |
Doubtful, but if I did, it would need to fill a few roles like cars & coffee poseur, motorcycle substitute, track day hero, and sunny day driver through remote mountain roads.
That brings it down to two (you said new) roadsters, a Caterham or Ariel, please. Or for something close enough that can be driven in all weather conditions, save a bundle and search for a nice 2005 MR2 Spyder M/T. |
I’d buy the new Tesla Roadster as a daily.
For the weekends I think something high singing like a Ferrari V12 with a stick shift, LFA or Porsche GT. For the track, a BAC Mono. |

I've mentioned this in other threads......
I enjoy driving. I enjoy driving mum's Yaris. I enjoy driving my BRZ. Part of that comes from being able to flog both cars at speeds I can grasp. The 360 Modena I drove on track was so far beyond my comprehension I found it not so enjoyable. And that's a slow car now. And certainly I'm no faster. Even the only non-exotic car that has some appeal looks too fast for me and that only comes in an auto so even that doesn't appeal all that much. I'm looking at you Alpine A110 Maybe a 220hp Elise? |
No. I'd take my BRZ and replace each part with the lightest alternative, load it up with carbon fiber and titanium and the like. It would be much more fun and much more useable. $12k oil changes are a no go.
|
Like a couple of others here have mentioned (and I've said before) I'm not going to own a car a can't or shouldn't drive. Because of that probably the closest thing to an exotic car I would own is a top of the line C7 or the upcoming C8 Corvette.
If I was to venture into the "true" exotic range though, a Ferrari would be on the list. |
I would. I probably wouldn't hold onto them for very long unless I had something very special.
Buying something used when they bottom out in the market, put some miles on it and sell and move onto the next one. |
Yes, I would then modify it and do mad skids.
After it bored me I would sell and start the whole process over again. Same as I do now, just on a grander scale. |
If it were a significant expense for me, then probably not. If I were rich AF and had the income to keep it going, then probably something from Ferrari or McLaren.
|
Honestly if I had the money for a new exotic, I'd either get a Lotus Elise or Evora and lightly modify it. Maybe an M2 and have fun.

I used to desperately want an Elise until I sat in one. Directly in front of my line of sight, the top of the windshield. It was worse than a Miata, which is only a bit above my line of sight. Also the Elise is ridiculously difficult to get in and out of. Stupidly so.
I still wouldn't mind a Lotus 7 or similar, but I'd probably not drive it much. The FRS is plenty raw for me. Realistically, right now I'm thinking Taycan "Turbo", but I'd rather have the Cayenne equivalent EV Turbo. I do more bombing up badly designed sidewalk cuts than racing. |

There are plenty of past for sale posts on the Lotus board where guys reluctantly are selling because they just can no longer get in and out. I am going to dread the day it happens to me. It is by far the most fun car I have ever owned. |
