Lightest Battery w/o Tender in CA
 

So, what's the best, easiest to mount battery with the most weight reduction?

I live in California, and I'm really forgetful so no tender.
I drive my car 4-5 days a week, so least maintenance the better!

Lastly, whatever pounds shaved off would be appreciated as I'm a fat ass. Easier to buy my way out than lose weight :lol:

LFX36L3-BS12 - 25lbs weight reduction. Pretty much has the most weight reduction and the highest CCA for a lightweight battery. No tender needed unless car sits for a long time in cold weather.

Most lightweight batteries should be tendered if sitting for a long period of time in cold weather, or if your car has a constant draw when turned off from something like alarm system, or remote start. In CA temps shouldn't be a concern, just hook up to a tender if you know your not driving for 5+ days, or you could just disconnect the battery terminals.

I have a 12lb braille battery. If you drive it daily, you are fine with out a tender. Car starts fine on corn in 40* temps.

I do have a tender hardwired to the car as it is not my daily, so the tender is just to insure it keeps everything happy.

I daily drive a PC680 short commute 20-30 minutes one way if I take a detour, sometimes it sits over a weekend, it's sat for a week before, no issues so far, it will be 2 years old in October. I've never hooked it to a tender, the battery has never been dead on me, PC925 is probably overkill but a surefire bet if you're nervous. I bought the smaller battery parts from Japan but they're still oversized for the battery and I've just got the bracket cranked down so it doesn't move, someone posted a parts list in another battery thread, it's like $40.

I'm going for the 5lb Shorai (or similar) when this thing dies as I've heard pretty good things and the PC680 has been flawless. I'm lazy so I'll probably spring for somebodies fancy mounting brackets which will suck but it's a one time purchase.

This thread is however reminding me I should probably buy a jump pack soon... Just in case.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I was looking at smaller batteries such as the PC925 and the B2015.

These look like they need custom mounts to use so far, and there's not much documentation besides buying stuff at hardware stores or custom mounts that are about the same price as the battery...

1. Can AGM be jumped like normal?
2. I have an old battery tender that's like 20+ year old, any issues using this?
3. Which one is the easiest to drop without a custom harness?

For my rx8 I used a deka 30l and it has worked fantastic. I did use a new battery bracket for it as well for a direct replacement. Haven't had any problems with bay area temps. Be mindful that these batteries don't have much of a reserve so understand that going into the purchase. Also, sometimes the terminal ends are too small/big for powersport batteries so check into that as well

There's trickle chargers out there that fit into the dead buttons where fog lights or a trunk button may be. Noco genius is a fantastic trickle charger

PS I know the frs doesn't get as hot as the rx8 but if looking into Odyssey I would get the fmj version

1) Yup.
2) I've got a BatteryTender JR that came with my '98 BMW bike. Still works fine.
-- One of the SAE terminals got stretched a bit once and I have to wiggle the terminal a bit to get steady lights. Works fine then. I'll have to fix it, someday.
3) Some parachute cord wrapped a few times around would do it if you're good with knots. To each their own.

It's not the harness that is an issue it is making sure you have the right terminals.

I am on a PC680. Car is only driven about 3 days a week. No tender, no issues.

A lot of the smaller batteries have screw type terminals. You need to put SAE posts on them.

Yeah, that's the easy part so far, I'm just confused how everyone mounts it without it moving everywhere or paying the same cost as the battery.

Probably way overkill but it’s 10times more secure then OEM, can remove battery/bracket with one hand it’s so small and light.

I have never attached a tender on my car, max is about 1 week without driving though. I have a Shorai LFX36L3-BS12 which weighs 4.8 pounds, plus the PTuning billet battery tray which weighs 30oz. Total weight is 6.8 pounds vs 31.5 pounds for factory battery and tray. That's a weight savings of over 24 pounds and I never once had to put a tender on it or worry about it failing to crank here in Texas.

An Odyssey PC680 weighs 15.4 pounds and then you need a tray still. Just get the Shorai. Don't jump it though, you can't jump any Lithium batteries, they'll catch fire.

What made you choose that route?

I would stick with Odyssey over Optima. Much better quality, I see a lot of dead cells with Optima over a short period of time.

Braille seems like a better choice since I run a dashcam + parking mode.
Unfortunately I've seen better reviews for Odyssey, and inconsistencies with Braille/Deka batteries.

Depending on how much money you are looking to spend, this is what I would get. It is in the stock case size, so no modification necessary. And it is extremely lightweight. It also should not need a tender.

If you run a Shorai you MUST have a tender and be diligent in keeping it at over 13.1 volts. Had the biggest, most powerful Shorai and it became a paperweight in about 6 months of daily driving. Not recommended at all for daily driving unless you ALWAYS keep it on a battery tender. I've run Odyssey batteries on every one of my vehicles and never had any issues with them (other than stupid Nissan dealer killing the nearly brand new one in my Frontier from extreme negligence). Have run the PC680 with metal jacket in my FR-S for years... don't tend it and have zero issues. The PC680 would be the smallest battery I would ever use in a car for daily duty without a tender...

Wow that's absurdly expensive considering it weighs more than double what a Shorai weighs.
