Powdercoating OEM PP wheels - Black or Bronze?

Hey y'all! Greetings from Dallas, TX!

I'm going to be getting my OEM PP wheels powder coated since I don't like their gunmetal/antracite finish on my silver BRZ.

Just trying to get a feel for what everyone thinks - should I go black or bronze?

(Excuse the poor Photoshop edit.)

Gold. I bought bronze winter wheels because i was afraid of the gold popping out too much. It doesn't.

mstryff 06-03-2019 01:28 AM

Bronze team. Black just kind of blends in with the tire and shadow and looks undefined to me.

Clutch Dog 06-03-2019 02:21 AM

team Bronze because black looks terrible with brake dust

Vr4gasmtt 06-03-2019 03:20 AM

I think the black would look better even though I voted for bronze. I think the photoshop makes the black kit look as good.

MrSkubi 06-03-2019 04:42 AM

If they'll come out as on picture go for bronze - they look awesome

tehShirt 06-03-2019 09:38 AM

Black is the choice for me on lighter colored cars. Bronze looks best on black IMO.

I recommend having the wheels coated with ceramic or similar product to assist with cleaning. Be careful about wheel cleaners as well. The finish is durable, but any amount of cleaner left on can cause a glossy finish to permanently haze. Satin finish is probably the way to go with powder coating.

black is useless on wheels. Have to zoom in to see what wheel it is lol. Just hides the design completely.

Mine are all black. It's ok...I see your point. This looks good.

Polished lip is a different story, as it creates contrast and reflects light. But I've seen deep dish matte black wheels with a black lip and I honestly can't even tell what wheel it is.

Ya, I agree with you. By highlighting the exterior rim it does a lot for the wheels. I bought mine dirt cheap because i couldn't afford the ones I wanted lol

Doubt it, I avoid T.O. whenever possible ;)

The series yellow has gloss black PP wheels.

I personally think champagne is under-rated, so that's why I ordered my Rotiforms in a champagne custom finish.

Got 'em on the car! Looks great! (Would probably look even better on Dark Grey Metallic.)

I'll get pics up soon...

Jonboy73 07-27-2019 04:37 PM

Any full car pics yet???

soundman98 07-27-2019 06:28 PM

still think gold would be better ;)

Dirty Harry 07-27-2019 10:18 PM

Yeah the bronze look better, good choice. Black wheels are becoming pretty common these days.

Not if you go Flat Black. Gloss is too shiny making it more difficult for our eyes to make out its design.

BA9092 08-11-2019 10:14 PM

Finally got a decent pic of them on. It's a very dark bronze. I love it! @xenarc @Dirty Harry @Jonboy73

Looks great man! Any spacers? (Sorry if you mentioned it before)

You almost make me want to run the OEM wheels for my street setup

Thank you!

Yes, I have 20mm H&R Trak+ spacers all around with RCE "Yellow" springs.

xenarc 08-13-2019 06:45 PM

Spacers make stock wheels better. 20mm front / 25mm rear.

Gold wheels tend to make any car look better.

The medium bronze on these is nice and should play off the silver well.

Irace86.2.0 08-20-2019 11:57 PM

Bronze is actually a great look. I don't know if it goes with silver, but I'm thinking if we do rims for the wife's black Q5 then maybe we will go with bronze

I don't know much about powder coating. Most powder coating I have seen is a unsmooth finish or a wrinkle finish. Yours is so glossy. Was it clear coated over the powder coating with regular paint, or is that another clear layer of powder coating, or do they polish the finish to get it shinny?

Yes, this particular metallic color requires a clear coat on top as per my powder coating guy and the manufacturer (Prismatic Powders) for some reason.

I originally thought it would look too glossy since I wanted a satin/matte finish, but I actually love it now after seeing it finished. It's also very easy to clean as result of the (glossy) clear coat.

I actually did a lot of image searching for wheel colors on silver cars.

Silver on silver can be a tough match and everyone's doing black wheels now. I've seen gold too but thought it was too bright/flashy. I saw bronze and loved the photos, especially since it's a subtle compromise between black and gold.

Irace86.2.0 08-21-2019 01:08 AM

Yeah they came out great and the color works with silver.

If silver is a tough match; and black is played out. Another good alternative is a gun metal (a dar/deep gray) finish.

Sure, the wheel might look "dirty" all of the time, but the contrast should give enough difference to look good.

Oh, and yes, some powder coats do require a (powder) clearcoat topper coat. The clear coat should be as tough as the color. Look at it this way, it is one more layer to protect the color.

Are you going to apply a wax or sealant of some kind to them to help them stay clean or at least making them easier to clean, i.e. just be able to wipe them with a rag vs. using wheel cleaner?

True. The glossy gunmetal finish that the PP wheels come in makes them look dirty all the time on a silver car since it's just a shade darker. I thought about a matte gunmetal too, but I've had those on previous cars. Just wanted to do something different.

I'll be doing a Sio2 type wheel coating soon. That should help with cleaning and brake dust.
