Things About Your FR-S/86 You've Grown Used To
I've had my FR-S for about 5 years now, and over that period of time I have, sort of, grown used to some of the quirks of my car. These include (not in any particular order):
Crickets - I really don't hear them anymore, unless I concentrate or my passenger points them out. It's just part of the charm. 2nd gear clunk (manual) - it may be just a trait of a 6-speed transmission (my friend's S2000 had the same issue) but, when it's cold, going into 2nd gear used to be unnerving. Now I just expect it. I might try to change the fluid for Pentosin but it's not a priority. Rattles, shakes, squeaks, etc. - My car used to be dead quiet inside when driving, even over bumps. Now there's a few minor squeaks from the a-pillars, or rattles from the shifter, stuff like that. No biggie. Again, charm. Cheap interior / floor mats - My driver's side floor mat already has a hole worn thru it, from very little use. I mean, it's thin as cardboard so what should I expect? I hate buying a whole new set just to replace the one. Meh... Lack of power - most of my driving is commuting, and here in Los Angeles that translates to anywhere from 5-25 mph on average during "rush" hour. When I actually DO get to use my big pedal, it's just from red light to red light. Does my FR-S lack power? I would never notice myself. Back seats - my car has back seats? Oh yeah, that's where the teddy bears are. Huh. Weird. Never noticed. Appreciation - people still compliment my car, kids mostly. It's nice to hear now and then. I mean, it's still a great looking car... Anything I missed? |

How low it is stock. Every time I drive someone and they get out they're like god damn your car is low.
I'm not even lowered yet, have some TRD Springs on the way but they only drop 1''. Though I am a bit surprised when I get on my bike and i'm higher up than in the car  |

Gotten used to literally having to slam my trunk closed. Feels like I'm going to break it every time with the force needed to close the thing.

Fix one rattle, and another rattle will appear. Kids LOVE my car.. Absolutely adore my car. Bunch of kids that play near my house always wave at me; had some kids watching me wash my car once as if a TV show. The even funnier thing is these kids don't discriminate cars based on their price, like adults would. Next door sits a F-150 Raptor, Mustang GT (with some mods), Lexus IS-300, Acura TLX(pretty sure A-spec) and a C7 Vette Sting Ray, all of which are brand new or very recent MY. |

Turn ignition to auxiliary mode then you hit the odo button I think until you see Go-off or something like that. Toggle that to on. |
I'll never get used to the lack of power, and I'm going to complain about it forever.

while my 2013 had a lot more quirks, most notably a rattle coming from the A pillar, the only thing I've had to learn to live with for my 2016 is the common 2nd gear shift rattle above 5 K RPMs though admittedly with the TRD exhaust I have to really listen for it, otherwise it usually gets drowned out. Besides that, think I've finally grown used to the seatbelt chime for when I have my one particular friend who doesn't buckle up right away... The other things like being in a low car, 2+2 problems, etc I had already experienced when I had a 240SX.

Yeah not sure how you get into aux power mode with push start, probably just brake or clutch when pushing the button. Once your in aux mode should be easy. Also in case Im forgetting something about how do it is also buried somewhere in the manual. Sure is a handy feature all cars that allow you to manually switch gears should have. |

In mine which is a 6 speed its on all the time unless you put in the clutch, even if I totally let off the gas. Is yours auto or maybe they changed something with how it works? |

I still haven't gotten used to that lol. At least its every 60k. |

This weekend is a brake fluid flush and possibly new pads and rotors depending on how worn things are. |

So if your going down a steep hill and your in a lower gear for engine braking and just using the brake pedal, it won't show what gear your in in the display? |

1. Those weird gymnastic moves you have to do getting in and out of the car. Automatic, easy, and fast for me after living with the car for years, and a lot of fun to watch passengers do for the first couple times.
2. Rattles, like everyone else has said. 3. Seating position.. just about perfect, and forget how perfect it is until I drive something else. HOWEVER... all of those things are fading rapidly because I haven't had my @#$@#4 car for @#$@#$@#???!!! two months and counting. |
Whilst the FA20 plugs are trickier to change than a IL4 they really aren't that hard if you have basic spanner spinning skills and some jack stands.
It takes me longer to wash my car than change/inspect the plugs. I love the look of my car, it looks like a 80's-90's Jap car from some angles, and a modern car from other angles. It's not trying to hard to be sporty, it doesn't need to, it is a light, 4 cyl, RWD manual coupe, true sports car DNA. As for the power, it has a extremely good power to weight ratio, considering it's a cheap mass produced car. If you want more power 200hp atw is only some parts and a good tune away. Its just like a S chassis, only not old. If you want more power then open up your wallet, just like you do for every other make and model of car that people buy. People don't realize how lucky they are to have the twins, always complaining that they want more, usually for less money. Think about this for a second, what other new lightweight 4 cyl manual coupe would you buy for the cost of a twin if they axed the twins tomorrow? All I can think of is the MX5 RF, which is what I would buy if there were no twins available. Opinions may vary |

MX5 RF is more expensive, starting above 34k. Where a new 86 is below 28k. Both are with zero options. Also hard not to mention on top of the additional money sacrifice to own a mx5 you get the luxury of having a car that has next to zero practicality for anything except transporting a driver 1 passenger and maybe 2 small backpacks if you really cram. If you ever have put 4 full size wheels in the back of a twin you can totally appreciate the cargo space which is really good for a small cheap sports car. |

My 86 can fit a huge amount if stuff, 3 good sized bags in the boot and the same in the back seat. I've had 2 adults and 2 kids plus all the beach and snorkeling gear required for 4 in my 86. Plus I also have a full sized 17 x 7.5 spare in the boot. |
Chicks hitting on me.

That is odd. Mine requires zero force. Like its impossible to lower the lid soft enough for it to not latch. The doors are the same way. |
Quote:
Correct. Its all math (no sensor). If the clutch is in it knows its impossible to know for sure what gear its in so the display turns off. |

My only complaint with this car is the shit engine sound, dip and the doors that will not stay open. I switched to E85 which makes the dip tolerable. So now its just the shit engine sound and doors slamming on my legs. Its still hands down the funnest car Ive ever driven. Ive driven a lot of cars too. For example a 1300whp Ford GT (no not the Mustang GT).
