Dashboard Camera?

I just spent about 30 minutes reviewing dashcams on Amazon, but it seems that there are $30 units that can't capture license plate numbers when you are right behind the car... and then there are $250+ units that still get shaky reviews from people who have purchased them.

I'd like a dashcam that I can hardwire so that it is running whenever I am driving and will record to an SD card. It should recycle when the card gets filled and doesn't need to have a display. I basically want to use it to cover my butt or help out someone else if something bad happens. (I witnessed two collisions near me last week!)

Does anyone have any experience with this? Can you recommend a good, reliable dash cam that won't disappoint me for $100-$200?

There was a recent thread on this very topic, some of the better stuff came towards the end. I believe the Blackvue DR-400 got good reviews

Oops, I searched dashboard... my bad!

Not sure it does much to prevent/avoid them, but at least there's evidence stored for sorting it out after the fact.

Thanks @ngabdala, I ordered one of those Pittasoft Blackvue DR400G-HD through Amazon for $260. Video reviews looked good and lately I have been seeing SO many bad drivers (and two collisions in the past week!) that I would like to be able to document some of them.

These are not compatible with apple products are they?

Not sure... I have a PC though.

It works with the iPad and the Android. Not sure why you went with the 260 on Amazon since you can get them on ebay for 180 EDIT: Never mind they are no longer listed, they must have been knockoffs EDITEDIT: Here ya go link

Add $30 if you want a warranty (bad sign) and those are shipped from Korea. I'd rather go with Amazon for piece of mind. I'm tired of ordering stuff from Asia, waiting a month and then having it show up broken or moments-until-broken. :)

ngabdala 08-03-2012 05:14 PM

Nice bro. I'm ordering mine shortly. $181 ebay

Edit: I decided to do Amazon with free two-day shipping and pay the extra $60.

Yeah, I pulled the trigger before I knew the discounted eBay auction was there, but I've been getting a LOT of defective stuff on eBay lately so the Amazon purchase has piece of mind. I think that having this camera will be fun... both for the stupid stuff that other people do in front of me -- and the stupid stuff I do when no one else is around. :)

These look great picture wise. Do you think that if it was mounted like on the passenger head rest that the lens angle is wide enough to film driver actions during a trackday, as this is what I would want it for. Maybe if the passenger seat was put all the way back? Would be great if you could give it a go! Cheers

I won't really know until it shows up... might get here today or tomorrow, but I'm out of town Wed-Sun so if it doesn't show up in the next 36 hours I don't get to play with it until next week.

dsgerbc 08-06-2012 12:55 PM

Surprised these things still cost that much. I got a similar unit more than two years ago for roughly the same price. Wasn't directly useful, thankfully, but on the plus side - I can pull the sd card and have a look at autox course at speed between my runs. Been thinking about picking up another one to face the rear (or move existing one to the rear and use my smartphone to record the front).

Well then, we expect a full DYI write up in the DYI section especially how to snake the power wire the interior trim so there aren't wires hanging about.

You know it!

Dayum. I just found this too XD So went and searched the forum to see if anyone else is talking about it and reading what you guys say.

Anyone have it installed on their car yet? I wanna make sure that the parking mode works without any modifications to the car's battery. Apparently the BRZ or any Japanese cars may not provide power to the camera when the car is turned off.

*wish I had this installed when I had sex with my GF in my BRZ*

DarrenDriven 08-20-2012 01:59 AM

Received it but haven't had the time to install it yet. Probably in a week or two. I'll do a full write-up on it.

Lots Of Varieties of camera out there.. These Cameras tend to malfunction easily. I have tried all kinds .. Cheap Ones and Expensive Ones.. So choose wisely..
Give Fort digital Brand a miss.. i paid over 300 dollars and it got spoiled almost four times.. Even with warranty for a year.. have to keep going down to get it fixed.. I threw it away at the fifth time. Useless product.. overpriced..
Any of here worth a punt? http://www.szswill.com/car-camera.html

DarrenDriven 03-09-2014 04:28 PM

I have had no problems with this camera, and I am thinking of buying one for each of my other cars, too.
