Shift Knobs Replacement

I am currently looking to replace my shift knob as it is worn. I am looking at the Mishimoto weighted shift knob in silver but heard reviews that it would get hot during the summer, it is also a little longer than I like. Those seems to be the only downside to it. I like that the adapters and threading is made from metal so that it doesn’t crack when over torqued.

I want to know what everyone generally runs so I have a better idea of other factors I should look for when replacing the shifter. Thanks.

I feel like everyone will have a preference for shift knobs. I had a Raceseng Topology weighted shift knob, i think around 470grams, and that was nice, but its took away some of that shifting feeling.

I also had a Cusco shift knob, it wasnt weighted, perhaps weighed around 100grams. It made shifting more difficult for daily driving but fun when having a spirited drive.

Im now back to the stock shift knob. I absolutely love the feeling, I personally dont think you can top the stock shift knob for feeling. So my suggestion, see if you can find a stock shift knob to replace your worn one.

^+1. i only started chasing different knobs after i burned my hand on the stock knob after the car sat out in the sun one day. the oem knob is quite good, i just didn't like the thermal characteristics.

ran a repro TRD knob for a while, then a carbon fiber with the required reverse lockout adapter(good thermally, but too tall), now running a translucent acrylic knob.

my main reasoning is because it doesn't get hot or cold, it just is. the TRD had better grip/feel with the concave top and leather sides, but the aluminum top cap got hot and cold which got irritating really fast.

Yeah that’s exactly what I’m expecting with the metal knobs... I want to know if there is a proper “upgrade” for this.

some people like the delrin knobs, it just cost too much for me-- i try to keep something like shift knobs under $20.

delrin is a form of plastic, so the theory is that it should work as well, i just don't know enough about it to take the gamble. and they're white, which doesn't match anything.

DarkPira7e 04-21-2019 08:49 PM

I have the Mishimoto weighted knob. I've also run an old aluminum heavy shift knob. The heat in the summer is a decent trade off, I keep a sock on it if it's going to sit in direct sunlight and take it off when I'm ready to roll. Well worth it, really. Or just deal with the heat, it's not that bad and cools off quick once your hand soaks up some of the heat it stored :)

You can also look into the Carbing high grip shift knob. Same style, but if you get it in black the material is delrin, which does not conduct heat from direct sunlight and store it.

HaXx 04-21-2019 09:07 PM

I have the stock one, but wearelikewise is what I frequently look at upgrading to. I just feel like I dont want to get carried aslway buying a ton a cheap tidbits for the car, before you know it I'll have black badges, rim stripes and spike lugs lol. Way I see it, you get three mods, make em big and expensive, dont sweat the small stuff.

Shift Knobs Replacement

Here's a cheap delrin shift knob I just ordered. I can post my impressions when it comes in.

Tomei TF101C-0000B Duracon Shift Knob Type-SS M12-P1.25 60mm https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07565N34N..._rzrVCb03JAA9X

I was looking at that one as well. I like to keep it short.

Yeah I'm not a fan of holding onto a metal dildo while driving. Maybe I'd like it but just havent tried it yet. Cueball style shifter for me please.

Hahaha. Could easily interpret the cueball as a giant nutsack as well lol.

How do you know you don't like it if you haven't tried it? [emoji6]

Come on... Touch it.

I've tried a bunch of different knobs and always go back to stock. The shape and weight are perfect from factory imo.

I will say that i did "upgrade" to the newer BRZ PP red shift knob though, which looks very nice and the leather seems softer and higher quality than my 2013 knob.

I did not know the PP came with a red knob.

Probably thinking about the tS.

Am I the only one who is not fond of the stock shift knob? The shape, the bottom silver trim that wiggles a little... I just feel it has so much going on and not as ergonomic as it should be. Like I can't really get a full good grasp on it. For reference, I think the S2000 or current Miata shift knob has felt the best for me.

jc7993 04-22-2019 10:22 AM

Is there a weighted shift knob but is heat resistant and short like the Tomei Duracon Type SS?

The reason I got a different shift knob was that I didn't like how sticky/grippy the top of the OEM knob is due to the material over the shift pattern logo. (I'm a palm shifter)

I changed to a Beatrush Q45 duracon plastic spherical knob. It weighs almost nothing. I prefer lighter rather than heavier knobs because I like to feel the knotching/shifts/gates.
It's on the smaller side, and might feel a bit slippery, but it definitely keeps the heat off (especially the white one)

--

As far as a "weighted version of the Tomei shape":

You might try Shift Solutions or Raceseng. They sell a lot of different varieties and often make FRS/BRZ knobs with lock-out collar. Look into hybrid shift knobs (plastic outer with metal inner core for weight)

I personally feel the stock shift knob to be very ergonomic. It may have to do with how you shift? Shifting I guess how a textbook would teach you how to shift (palm on the top).

It doesn’t seem to be as weighted like the others. The reason why I want to go weighted is because I want the shifting to feel more smoother... not sure if it has something to do with the shift gate as it feels like it crunches every time I’m shifting to 1st or 2nd gear.

if you want weighted, dont get the tomei duracon. the threads are plastic and it weighs almost nothing.

Blox makes neoprene knob covers for summer if you still prefer the metal ones. Has worked great for me in 2 different cars.

Dr. BRZ 04-22-2019 09:33 PM

Be a man and spend the money and get the irp! Never have to replace the knob because its the BEST shifter lol

Dont you need to get your car up on a lift to install that though?

It's not that hard to jack a car up. You only need access to the transmission link, same as you would for any shortshifter install. One can argue that you could install some from inside the cabin, but from experience there's just more space coming from under

So you can do it with a regular floor jack on wheels that u use to swap wheels?

Yes, though I recommend using jack stands as well.

I've done the whole transmission on just jack stands.

Compared to that, a shifter is a piece of cake. The first job I ever did under a car was my TRD Quickshifter. For most shifter installs, you only need to deal with a rubber boot, spring clip, and 5 bolts from underneath at most. You can undo the driveshaft support bracket (2 bolts) for more space, but that's optional. The rest of the work is up top undoing the trim and shifter bracket.

Nope not at all. If you got jack stands than you good

gpvecchi 04-23-2019 05:08 PM

I did short shifter from the top. Quite difficult, but I made it.

norcalpb 04-23-2019 05:33 PM

OEM TS shifter is the best IMO. I thought it would feel identical to my 13 BRZ knob but with a red top, but it feels so much better and feels like real leather even though I know it’s probably not.

My 13 knob had a spinning silver piece/the leather spun so I had that reupholstered/repaired with genuine Napa leather. I still like the TS knob better.

lol it's funny, my stock 13 knob silver trim piece did not spin at all, perfectly fine.

my red tS knob had the spinning silver thing (super annoying) till i just used a few carefully placed drops of krazyglue to put an end to it.

soundman98 04-24-2019 12:34 AM

I enjoyed playing with that silver trim. Now i just play with the reverse lockout.

I'm very fidgety in cars, which is why i got a manual in the first place!

Thanks folks! I too am a big fan of those shift knobs. Good shape for either side or top grip and looks pretty damn good too in my completely biased opinion. We will be having a coated version of the stainless knobs coming out in the next couple of months or less too. Hopefully it'll help when it gets crazy hot or super cold outside, but mainly it makes the grip feel even better.

But for now OP, the "best of both worlds" knobs you're looking for is made by Raceseng. They're expensive, but when you want a weighted knob with a delrin cover or anything with multi-piece construction its not going to be cheap.

They have a few different shapes and some cool modular stuff so you can choose different covers and centers and stuff. Go take a look because its exactly what you're looking for.
