Help pricing my BRZ
I'm looking to sell my 2015 BRZ and I was hoping to get some advice on what a reasonable price would be. It's difficult to price project cars but I'm hoping to get a few perspectives from the people here.

About a $1,000 more than a stock one in your area.

In California, not much. You will not even be able to smog it for legal sale.

mods don't add much (if at all) to the value of a car.
You mighty get a couple thousand over average, but you are not recouping the majority of the costs put into that car. |
KBB has it at $15-18k as a stock BRZ with "premium" wheels.
Probably closer to that high mark of $18k. If the mods and news of engine failures don't scare everyone away. It's like selling an early 2000's 996. Too many horror stories out there at this point. |

It is funny to watch all the guys with really heavy mods worry about the "dumb techs" screwing up their engine during a repair. |

Look at 996's, the '99 is the most reliable, but has cable frunk and trunk releases (eww!) and ugly headlights. They are always cheaper than a 2000 or 2001, and considerably cheaper than any '02+, even with a time bomb engine. Buying a modded car is a gamble. You know for a fact it's been run hard, and have absolutely no idea how hard, or how it's been taken care of. Pushing $20k for a 2015 model years with ??? left before something, anything, fails. You can find a new '18 for $25k I bet. The vast majority of people who buy cars aren't like us. Edit: ocbrz66, The car is awesome and looks to be in excellent shape. If I were in the market for a nicely built BRZ it would be on the short list for sure. Selling modded cars sucks, been there, lost mega $$ every time. |

As mentioned, if you're looking to recoup any money on the aftermarket parts, you'll do much better (time permitting) to part it out and put it all back to stock. |

:laughabove::laughabove: Spent the last 7 years in Montana, surprisingly few sheep. Lots of hyper cars though, damn things are everywhere out on the farm. Funny story... BC drove his Veyron on Goldrush, saw a windmill out on a farm in no-where Montana. Trespassed up to said windmill to get a picture with his Veyron. Bottomed out the Bug, blew out both radiators and had to have it towed back to Cali. I believe he said the radiators were $40k a piece, plus whatever that tow bill was :eyebulge: |
Parting out will be tricky as the engine is lowered compression so its not as simple as pulling the turbo off a stock long block. The factory transmission mounts are also modified so returning to a stock trans would be an issue.
I think I'd be out more time and money pursuing returning it to stock vs taking a haircut on the parts sold on the car. If it was on a stock trans and stock compression I'd certainly consider it. Parts for these things are dirt cheap that's for sure. |

The fastest way to get rid of this car is to trade your engine setup + cash for someone else's engine/transmission, part out the bolt-on parts, and then sell the car close to stock.
I parted out my BRZ and got about $9000 worth of parts sold and got rid of the car in (mostly) stock form for about $1500 less than what I could've traded it in to Carmax for. |
Forgot to mention, smog is an issue if you are trying to sell it anywhere outside of your original state.
Quote:
If you live in Southern California and are trying to sell an out of state vehicle in California, you pass the responsibility of smog check for title transfer to the buyer. At the end of the day, there's CA title transfer requirements (or any title transfer smog in any state that requires it), so this is important if you are serious about selling the car to prospective buyers. Makes it an easier sell if the buyer doesn't have to jump through hoops like fake companies in no-smog states to mod their cars. -alex |
