Oil change time. Castrol Edge. Valvoline. or Pennzoil ?
|
|
I used the site search and nothing came up.
Decided to use up more internet |
|
I'll just get Castol Edge, but I think all 3 are fine
|
All three are the absolute worse.
Being a Mobile 1 fan boy, I recommend.......... Mobile 1. |
Na, you want Penrite full synth 5w30.
LOL |
Do people still use Royal purple?
|
Amsoil Signature or Mobile 1 gets my votes, in that order
|
I plan on trying Amazon Basics next oil change.

Mobile 1.
$25-26 per 5 quart jug at Walmart; very difficult to beat that value I think. |
Any brand name synthetic oil of the right grade is fine. They are probably all made in the same place anyway.

Exactly. Walmart Supertech is what I use. |
Here's a couple of really good articles:

That other dude has far to much time on his hands and a really weird hobby. The best I could tell is that like the graphs the differences are so minor that all but the best of the built engines can use any of the synthetics without fear. |
I use royal purple if I know I am going to track day.
Eneos for daily. |
For what it's worth here is my experience...
Dealership supplied Mobil Super 3000 I burned almost a full liter during 10k kms. Castrol Edge Titanium had no oil burn for first 5k and last 5k kms lost ~1/2 liter. Motul 8100 Eco-lite I had around 1/4-1/2 liter loss over 10k kms. The Motul had such little loss I can almost say the difference could be how level the ground was where I check my oil, this car is super sensitive to that. I check my oil every second fuel fill-up, so every other week. Currently still running Motul. All daily driving, no track use other than some "spirited" canyon driving a few times a year. Where I am, Motul is also the cheapest by nearly 30% over the Castrol. Castrol only slightly cheaper if I catch it on sale. |
I put AMSoil in my 2013 Subaru BRZ Premium. I believe my choice is largely for peace of mind, I have not done any independent studies or run anything besides AMSoil since I bought the car.

I have run Castrol oil in all my small bore imported sports (and sporty) cars. Over the years, that includes a Fiat 124, Datsun 280Z, 2 x Toyota Supra, Acura Integra GSR, Nissan 350Z and now a 2ZZ swapped MR2 Spyder. I really think the difference in most "performance" oil is just marketing. However, in all the years that I have used Castrol, I have never had an internal engine failure despite driving the cars very hard. That is all that really matters to me.

Millers nanodrive is a good oil. Hads hp too

I get whatever synthetic is currently running a rebate. This one is good until June 30th. I got my rebate ~2 weeks after I submitted it.

Mag1 is a great oil.
If I cant find that its usually mobil one since its sold so inexpensively at Walmart. This last oil change I used QSUD for the first time. I'm sure it will be fine. |
I'll never run Amsoil in anything I own. When a company resorts to cult-like MLM schemes and fake science presentations reminiscent of a Clark Stanley medicine show to market its product, I become suspicious that it's made from genuine rattlesnakes.
|
You folks need to get out of here with your Plebeian oils! The most obvious answer is Mobil1.

Snake oil is still just snake oil. I learned a while back with monster audio products, if it appears the marketing team has put more effort into the description than the packaging team did on the box, it is not a product worth paying extra for unless you plan to showcase marketing department successes. |
Redline 5W30 for me!
|
i normally use valvoline synpower 0w20 and blackstone reports have come back really nice, but i took the plunge and tried some amazon 0w20 because i was curious

I'm sure there are several very good options!
MobilOne is factory fill on all Porsches, and since it's $25 at Walmart for the 0w40 European formula MobilOne jug, I feel like I can't go wrong there. My GSR has over 336,000 miles (200k put on by me) and I've always used MobilOne for that engine and it still has great compression. All my sports cars get tracked and this oil has never let me down. Anyone else ever do Blackstone oil analysis? |

i mean, i expect it to perform just as well as any other oil, as the bottle is stamped to meet the same standards. i just, well, don't expect it to... no one ever said "i'll take the cheap steak, it's just as good as the high end steak..." i keep waiting to hear the other shoe on amazon/walmart oil. it just seems like a cheat code of some sort. |

no i just switched to it and plan on run about 3500 miles and send it to blackstone and see. it meets the same standards as the rest of the oil and ive seen backyard garage reviews saying its just as good but well see. probably not worth the 10$ saved but i really wanted to see and i figured my car is low miles so its not hugely risky. |
Our cars need:
0W-20 API SN Plus ILSAC GF-5 This meets the specs for $19. https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-...dp/B07CG384GQ/ Castrol Edge is almost double at $33. |

yep thats what i put in. im guessing that the more expensive brands put non required bonus shit in their but well see in a few months |

You can find it on sale / rebate at Auto parts stores (major companies) for about $28 ish. I don't like Amazon much either.... ..big fish, eating smaller fishes, for snacks, so yearly I tend not to patronize. |
You would think that the amount of deliberation owners spend on choosing motor oil that they were calculating what it takes to get a satellite into orbit. Maybe it is one of the few things that an owner can attend to and not get in over their heads. I wonder if brake fluid gets as much attention. How many owners on this forum have cars that are overdue for time and/or mileage. I recently polled nearly all my friends on that and got a unanimous, “Huh?” Check your manual. And by the way, don’t confuse the DOT types; like synthetic motor oil, there are various blends for different applications. My Sprinter’s turbo-diesel requires a very specific oil formulation for low ash, sulfur and volatility to protect the DPF and SCR. The only readily available and reasonably priced oil that meets the MB 229.51 or 229.52 specification is Valvoline Synpower MST. With 13+ quarts for a fill, that gets expensive and if you let the shop do it, grab your socks. Comparing Valvoline to the next popular choice, Mobile One, the spec sheet reveals some only minor differences, but both exceed Mercedes-Benz specifications. The oil required for the Subaru FA 2.0 engine is available from a wider variety of suppliers. Last time I used Mobile One because I was at Costco, the price was good... done. I did use an oil filter acquired from the Subaru shop. This same sort of discussion about the best oil filter never ends. Done.
