Encountering other BRZ/86's on the road...

What usually happens when you encounter another BRZ/86 (or vice versa) going in the same direction or on the same road? Also, do you guys usually acknowledge each other in the opposite direction through waves/salutes/thumbs up?

If another BRZ/86 noticed me on the same road, almost always that car will drive up next to me and do either one or both of the following (traffic permitting):

1. Give a nod or size my stock car up
2. Starts revving/hooning

... And I ignore the latter. I appreciate the acknowledgement but I must apologize for not being as enthusiastic about seeing another fellow driver and returning the "happy dance". I'll gladly return a wave/salute or thumbs up then go back to minding our own business though.

If I see another BRZ/86 up ahead on the freeway, I'll sometimes even slow down and stay back to not be noticed by the other BRZ/86... then they spot me and sure enough, cue the above. The more modded their car (as in more "fast & furious" looking), it seems the more likely they will get all excited.

I just don't want to be lumped in with "that" group of drivers by the other surrounding drivers and contribute to what seems to already be a bad rep for sports car drivers in "normal" drivers' eyes.

To be clear, I don't find these situations annoying but it is a rather interesting reaction from them sometimes.

Strangely enough, I don't get much reaction from another driver in the opposite direction. I would wave or salute and more than half the time, there is no response regardless of how soon we saw each other. So this is not common? Miata and S2k people almost always wave.

What are your encounters like?

Summerwolf 01-14-2019 09:17 AM

A quick minor wave usually.

DarkPira7e 01-14-2019 10:38 AM

Mine is the Toyota, so nobody waves to me :( If it was a Subaru, I'd probably see white spray onto their windshield (Vermont Subaru enthusiasts will freak out over a green 1998 Outback)

8RZ 01-14-2019 10:49 AM

I get way more waves/nods from WRX owners than twin owners.

Soloside 01-14-2019 11:08 AM

we immediately get a hotel room and bang each others gears out.

Fast_ish 01-14-2019 11:09 AM

usually a wave, if i get beside them (and they are modded) usually ask for their IG handle to follow them.

its a community, not about doing stupid shit or trying to race, just out to appreciate the cars

Same I never get waves from twin owners but ive gotten a handful from wrx drivers

SuperTom 01-14-2019 11:45 AM

some of it could be generational as well. Im middle aged. A lot of Corvette owners wave and its a known tradition. A lot of Corvette owners are in the older crowd.

In my 86 ive tried some small waves or head nods nothing over the top. A lot of the gt86s ive encountered are modded clean so they are most likely an enthusiast like myself but I rarely get a reply. I think a lot of the younger crowd is just part of the hide yourself in your cellphone generation.

Not trying to offend any of the generations just my observations.

Tcoat 01-14-2019 12:07 PM

I always wave. If I see them in time that is.
Some younger ones wave back. Some don't.
Some older ones wave back. Some don't.
Don't really care if they wave back or not and don't take it personally.
Only have come across two "racers". Both were BRZs. One was a young douche and the other was an old lady. When I say old that means they were OLD.

Haha funny how that perspective changes as we get on in years isn't it. I say that sometimes and my wife looks at me like I forget that we're not 'young' anymore. There are young seniors and there are old seniors, pinning it down to a particular number is getting harder and harder.

Leonardo 01-14-2019 12:37 PM

I wave. Sometimes I get a return "hello" of some kind. Most times it's just a weird look.

Not to many modified twins in my area. Most are bone stock. (Not that that is an issue; just that from experience I'm less likely to get a wave from a stock twin)

Gunman 01-14-2019 12:42 PM

Flip 'em off, like I do everyone else...I don't discriminate :)

imped4now 01-14-2019 12:47 PM

I come from the Jeep world and also own a Focus RS. I generally give a two-finger wave/salute to any vehicle I like and appreciate - a well built Jeep (not common, most are magazine cover street queens), a twin, a Fiesta ST/Focus ST/RS, WRX, Evo, Vette, Porsche, etc.

I've started doing this also.
Sideways brim cap crowd is not my thing.
And those are the odds

Spuds 01-14-2019 11:45 PM

If it's an FRS or 86 I wave if I see them in time. BRZs get the finger.

JK. Usually I get a wave or nothing. Though most of the time I see a twin I'm in my Accent and I don't wave because that would be awkward...

R_E_L 01-14-2019 11:57 PM

I try to wave sometimes. I feel awkward though if people have their windows up since it's hard to tell if they notice you, not to mention people don't usually wave at each other in cars, so I feel kinda weird. It's funny because when I ride my little cbr I always give people the typical motorcyclist salute.

However instead of waving, what I do find myself doing more often is pointing and yelling "BRUDDERRRR!!!!" when I see a twin.

Dr. BRZ 01-15-2019 02:03 AM

I just race them

Brink 01-15-2019 03:06 AM

Other twins exist in the real world? I thought they only existed in forums.

mintyfresh 01-15-2019 04:24 AM

I'm guessing most of you that get waves have your windows fully down. I dislike the sun blasting the side of my face so it's usually just cracked open. I do have some wrx/sti/86 that get behind me and check out the whip

Tangizdope 01-15-2019 04:56 AM

Go anywhere near a college campus and every twin waves. It's a good feeling :)

Yep, I'm in this club, with the same observations. I'd say about 50% of the time I get a wave back, or the other person waves first.

bcj 01-15-2019 12:38 PM

I wave at twins from my motorcycle.
Usually only get the glazed over "WTF????" look.

Sapphireho 01-15-2019 12:44 PM

Around town, If it is a guy driving, I usually get a wave or peace sign, but seems 90% of the time it is a 60+ yo white woman or a 20 something Asian woman. Both those groups just look straight ahead.

If I'm driving in the hills I usually always get waves from twins.

I always wave at my fellow brethren.

Willie Swoopes 01-15-2019 06:23 PM

I see a few 86s around here, and wave, but usually all I can see is a windshield glare.

In town I get the thumbs up from the kids, so I like cruising by the elementary/middle schools. That's not weird!

Usually the older kids have HP on the brain, so skip the high school.

Naw, I say each to his/hers own. I appreciate a wide variety of automobiles.

But, I drive a BRZ.

Started at a new campus on Monday and saw two twins in the parking lot. I can tell it’s going to be a great semester lol

Will BRZ 01-15-2019 11:56 PM

I’ve been seeing more and more twins around here which is cool. I almost always wave and almost always don’t get one back lol the only time I’ve been noticed was at a red light where a modded one revved as he pulled up.

I like seeing them around though. It’s nice :)

Swabodda 01-16-2019 12:19 AM

I rarely get the time of day from Twins... STI's always wave, honk, thumbs up, etc.

wutangbrz 01-16-2019 03:19 AM

usually get alot of love in person, not so much online

Grey86 01-16-2019 04:09 AM

i alway wave/nod when i see a twin (90% of them are BRZ) and i get nothing back.
but on the rare occasion i see another 86 and get a nod back.

but most of the time the modded cars around town (not many) we would rev or wave or speed off when side by side.

DriveDriftDogfight86 01-16-2019 08:13 AM

I don’t wave. Only because I live on a military base, every other car is a Subaru. There’s more twins here than I can even keep track of, and the WRX’s are like the new “V6 Camaro”. I’d just be waving every 2 minutes.

why? 01-16-2019 09:55 AM

I don't get how you all can actually see other drivers. Maybe it's because my eyes suck or I'm daydreaming, but I usually only notice other twins if they make a point of wanting me to notice them. They all know who I am since I have bright green wheels.

If coming toward me it is easy. If coming up from behind or beside me I usually hear them before I see them and look around for the car with the boxer engine. Obviously I find more WRX/STis than anything that way though. Should a quiet one sneak up on me I probably won't react in time to wave and they then get all dejected and post on here how nobody waves. Even when I do instinctively wave back I usually have my tinted windows up so they may see a slight shadow at best or think I ignored them at worst. The moral of the story is that anybody that wants a wave needs to have a loud enough exhaust so I can find them and get my window down.

wally 01-16-2019 10:44 AM

I wave like a looney we got the same car afterall. Hell i've seen 7 different twin cars in my own small town and I make sure to wave at them everytime I see them, except for the gray one he's a ****.

Im sure most of us can tell by the dimensions of the car and headlights
I can spot one coming up behind me just by the headlight style

NoHaveMSG 01-16-2019 11:09 AM

About 1/3 I come across wave which I return, another 1/3 will hoon like morons, and the last 1/3 is an ignore. If you are in the I5 corridor in OR and you drive like an idiot there is a good chance you are on my dash cam.
