How to tell if your car needs more HP

1) Go to track with your unmodded car

2) Use stopwatch and record a few lap times.

3) Have an instructor do a lap.

4) If your time is equal or faster, then add HP
Otherwise, your car doesn’t need horsepower.
It needs the driver mod.

Instead, this is the reality

That's one way of thinking about it.

Or you could think about another way.

1) Ask yourself if your car needs more power. If yes: move to step #2

2) Check bank account. If there is enough money in it: move to step #3.

3) Buy parts.

4) Enjoy!

Or like I have.

I chose "No" on step #1, and skipped straight to step #4 :burnrubber:

What mods do you have?

Ultramaroon 01-12-2019 05:07 PM

I'll allow it.

NoHaveMSG 01-12-2019 05:13 PM

I don't think it is ever a need as much as it is a want. I know I have at least a couple seconds in me at my local track, but I got a good deal so :bonk:

Ultramaroon 01-12-2019 06:11 PM

I just slow down for the straights. Not much challenge to mashing the gas pedal.

He isn't on a track.

I made one for figuring out if you need more food:

1) Go to the store hungry on an empty stomach.

2) Buy a candybar and you eat it.

3) Buy a fat friend a candybar and they eat it.

4) If you aren't satisfied and friend is, then eat more.
Otherwise, you are full and you don't need more candy.
Your fat friend should go on a diet.

:D

Just add hp like this loser in the Supra.

Even on a track there's no point to gritting one's teeth on the straights. Nice calm redline upshifts get the job done just fine. Smooth is fast and I only race myself.

weederr33 01-13-2019 12:30 AM

Or it can go like this...

1) Go to the back roads and enjoy your car

2) Look at your bank account and determine if you have enough money

3) Buy whatever parts you feel satisfies your desires

4) Not expect some pretentious person on the internet to tell you what you should or shouldn't do.

Oh no, what will I ever do when people that I don't know disagree with my opinions and choices, or call me out because, obviously, I am not as awesome as they think they are.

Jebus I'm so lucky to be told what is right by random people on the interwebs.

I've always answered this question for myself easily - am I tired of the car's acceleration? If yes, raise the boost.

That means you got the wrong car
You need muscle V8 for stoplight racer

Haha this happened to me. Not that I want to go FI anyway but my instructor was in his 60s/70s and took me out in his stock 2017 BRZ with performance package just like mine and tore it all up. Even passed a Porsche in the advanced group with it. So yeah. I got a ways to go lol.

This is a gross over-generalization. A car can be modified to suit many purposes. Should anyone who wants to improve handling buy a Porsche or buy a Lotus Elise? Adding power does not mean someone is a "stoplight racer" and should buy into a different platform.

I understand the point you're making, but come on

I bet he made it look easy too.

A famous racer once said "you know when you have enough hp when you can leave two black lines from the exit of the corner to the next braking zone".

TommyW 01-13-2019 05:48 PM

Unless you have a Hellcat, ZR1, etc, someone will always have more power than you.

Is my car powerful enough for the intended purpose? No? you need more power. Yes? then you don't need more power.

Also a great engineer. He invented blade-type cockpit-adjustable (on/off really) anti-roll bars.

Isn't this why stock class exists?

Stock for stock, I've taken out a Z06, and a cayman on the local a track in the same day only because i know the track like the back of my hand. given any other bigger track, i would get destroyed on straights. if i can't keep up on a technical track in the turns, i'll know my car needs power.

For now, i'm good with an underdog, over-delivering.
