2017+ Kouki 86 Exhaust Hole Cover *Gauging Interest*

Hey everyone,

Thought I'd post it here as well since it pertains specifically to the 86's

I wasn't too happy with the current offerings for the Kouki 86 exhaust hole covers. To be fair they'll cover the hole up but look awkward with the new faux diffuser lip that Toyota added to the 2017+ rear bumpers.

So I went about creating my own.

I had the rear bumper scanned and started creating a cover using Solidworks. I have access to urethane soft tooling and SLS/FDM 3D printers at work so it's pretty easy to design and put into production.

I was wondering if there was enough interest/koukis going single exit to try to put these in to production.:iono:

I'm about 90% of the way there. I have to print out a sample when I can and see how it fits.

This looks GREAT IMO! Flows well with the rear diffuser.

Intetested. But for pass side as well?

Would be easy to mirror the part and create one for the passenger side. I assume it would be identical. Would need to check with someone local.

NARFALICIOUS 01-18-2019 02:15 AM

Been needing one of these for the passenger side.

I have also been thinking... Why hasn't anyone made something that goes over or replaces the rear bumper piece altogether? And I'm not talking about a fancy one, just something that looks stock but looks like there was never that other hole?

Code Monkey 01-18-2019 11:49 AM

^ +1, gimme a whole piece.

I'm not sure i follow. Do you mean like a brand new "faux" diffuser section?
One where you would have to cut out the old one and some how attach it to the bumper?

DarkPira7e 01-18-2019 12:10 PM

I think they mean the entire diffuser. That's how I feel, there's nothing for single exit, it'd be worth $400 to have a nice unit that also looks better. Or just does away with the matte plastic and goes gloss

Yes the entire black part that encompasses the bottom part of the rear bumper, with the 2 exhaust holes and the hole for the triangle light.
I believe it's removable, since I've seen people with their's intentionally removed/replaced.

Not one necessarily requiring you to cut out a hole. One could be made with a driver side hole only, and an entirely separate part with only the passenger side hole. You purchase the one you need.

----

Although I've been thinking.... Maybe someone could just use the existing exhaust hole covers available on the market, glue, fill the crease with body filler, smooth out, then use vinyl to wrap the whole diffuser so it looks smooth.

That rear portion is not removable. Those that have done it have cut them off with a dremel or similar tool.

Oh, that's what you meant by cutting it out. I didn't know.

Plan B? i dont know.

this is for 2017+ models. The rear diffuser is not removable on these models. I believe on the earlier models (1st gen if you want to call it that) are removable but I could be wrong its the only model Ive seen with them removed

KnightRyderx2 01-18-2019 05:41 PM

The black part on the rear bumper of the 86, FR-S, and BRZ is not removable, you have to cut that part to remove them. For example to add the rocketbunny rear diffuser you have to cut the stock out.

There is a part for the early models, 16' and earlier, that would add a faux diffuser pictured below. Not sure if they have something like that for the later model, 17+.

I'm sorry past couple of weeks at work have been hectic, but I should be printing a prototype this week and testing for fitment. If it works well I'll be sending it to my auto body guy to get painted. He has the exact paint for the black/rear portion.

Hoping to get some pictures this weekend of the test piece fitted if all goes well.

Pretty cool.

Just keep in mind, if you do start advertising or selling here on the forum, make sure to become a vendor, so you don't break a forum rules.

Any good news?

Test printed the first prototype. We've been hit with a few snow storms here so trying to get the back side clean and test mounted is a little difficult.

I'll try to take pictures of the test piece, as is, soon.

Out of curiosity, how is everyone mounting their current exhaust covers? Self tapping screws or bolts and nuts?

FRStevan 02-15-2019 12:55 AM

Count me in for one as well!

@RayRay88 I've had the Innovated Dynamics exhaust hole cover on my BRZ for about two years now and they supplied me with nuts and bolts. The holes came pre-drilled in the cover, so it was a pretty easy mock up. Haven't had any issues with it coming loose since the installation.

RayRay88 02-26-2019 01:44 PM

Hello everyone!

Just an update, wanted to post some pictures of the prototype part.

It was printed in SLS Nylon (Flexible, durable, high temp and chemical resistant), you can see the stepping lines (0.004in layer thickness) but they'll be primed, filled and smoothed before I install it.

Dry fitting it looks good, there are some minor 1mm or less gaps around the edges but im sure it'll be undetectable short of someone moving in about a foot or two close to it and taking a look. Overall pretty happy with it. There's quite a bit of thickness around the mounting holes to drill it out to whatever fastening hardware I decide to go with.

Still not sure what type of real interest there is in the part. We have the capabilities to create a mold of it and cast in High impact Urethane. But there would definitely be a minimum order needed per side (each side requiring its own tooling). Would also have to reach out and get vendor status here I'm sure.

Looking forward to get it primed and painted. I spoke to my body shop guy who has some paint matched bumper paint for the rear diffuser area.
It's been hectic at work recently but I'm hoping to get it mounted on the car in the next few weeks.
Thank you everyone who has showed interest in the part. :thanks:

Bach415 03-01-2019 10:20 PM

What kind of 3d scanner did you use to scan that section or was it off a 3d cad model already made?

I believe it was an artec scanner.

That scanner is wayyyyyy out of my budget. So much for thinking about buying a good 3d scanner. Thanks!

It's beginning to look a lot harder to get done. I'd need about 20 people per side to commit in advance before I can make a urethane mold. Even then the price would be about $100+. Really not sure if there's enough interest in this.

Why must cheap plastic be so expensive? :mad0260:

It's more the tooling costs. This isn't even hard injection mold tooling, it's soft tooling (urethane casting/RTV).

I can write off the SLS Nylon prototype part because I work here, but the cost to a customer after finishing and paint for another one off would be close to $250.

monkeybike 09-25-2019 03:33 AM

Any chance of sharing the file so people could print their own?

I can't see there being enough people to do a full run.
