Anyone know the history on this yellow, non-release series ‘15 FR-S?

http://atcm.co/S2PVDP/1d0e0805

At first glance, it appears to be a modified release series. The VIN info shows yellow as the factory paint color but it is missing all sorts of things that came on the release series. The aero kit, HID headlights, push button start, auto climate control, and fender garnishes are all missing. Did someone go through the effort of removing all of that or was this one of those weirdo SET vehicles? My lookup system shows it as yellow as the original color and delivered with some SET packages. TIA.

That's really interesting. It still has the front seats from a RS 1.0 too. Weird that the FRS badge is in the wrong place. If I had to guess I would say it was a RS 1.0 that had all the goodies switched out. I wonder if it has a serial number on it still like the other RS 1.0?

The badge and lack of aero kit made me think that it was in a collision and the person just repaired things differently so save money (HIDs and TRD aero kit are probably pricey), but auto HVAC and push button start don’t make any sense in that scenario. Unless maybe it was a theft recovery. I don’t see a salvage title or anything like that listed with it. My now-totaled FR-S shows a big salvage title warning when I put its VIN in.

Any chance it was just a custom paint order?

No, the system I look at pulls up the factory color as yellow from the VIN.

IMO, the paint is factory. (judging from the pic of the engine) The badge is in a weird spot... It looks to be good condition other than the weird badge. Cant really tell more from the pics...

If insurance is kept out of the loop, the title stays clean. So, if the owner damaged parts and then replaced them him self, it could look like this... Anyway, it is strange...

My advice: Pass. There are plenty more "fish" in the sea. Too many questions at that price.

Looks like a Fram oil filter. Pass.

Yea, that is generally my opinion as well. I actually really like the color and aero kit versus the release series we got, but all those missing RS parts raise too many questions. It was more of a curiosity at this point versus actually considering purchasing it. I know the RS1.0 spec pretty well so I was really interested in the back story or if there was a yellow FR-S spec that I didn’t know about. I know that Japan market had yellow available as a normal color during that time.

It has definitely been modified from original:

That or someone paid the owner good money to swap regular FRS parts for his RS1.0 FRS parts

mazeroni 01-07-2019 01:41 PM

Maybe it was supposed to be a show car or something. They stripped the interior and parts of the exterior, sold them to pay for aftermarket stuff, then ran out of money. So then the owner or someone else found some cheap parts and tried putting it back together.

I'd want to see the car in person. It looks salvageable, I'd just worry that if my theory is correct, they did a shit job in rebuilding it.

$16K it too much.

yesterday I saw this car in my area:

2013-2015 (as evidenced by the lack of shark fin on the roof)
white color
"Subaru BRZ" with Scion emblem
RS 1.0 kit front end, RS 1.0 (or TRD) rear bumper
2017+ tail lights
TRD carbon fender inserts
stock exhaust with large tips

Seeing that swapped trunk lid, my guess is that it has been wrecked.

Per the link I posted above it appears to have found its way to Velocity Motorsports from Florida Fine Cars in Hollywood, FL. Florida is a no-fault state for injury coverage, but not for property damage. As a result of our idiotic regulations, insurance rates down here are insane. For example, when I recently bought my fourth car, my insurance company quoted me $4000 per year to insure all four vehicles, for a 48 year old with no recent accidents or tickets, very good credit and no other drivers on the policy. I can't imagine what they would quote me if I were 22 years old and had a FICO score below 800.

A lot of people here are so shocked and panicked by their insurance quotes that they either drop everything except the state minimums, or they just get insured long enough to get registered and let the coverage lapse, or they switch their insurance to one of these scam insurance companies that charge really low rates just to provide proof of coverage but fight tooth and nail against any claims. If the owner wrecked it, he may have had no insurance with which to file a claim, so he may have fixed it out of his own pocket or sold it to someone who repaired it. That would make sense with the pic of that obviously swapped trunk lid with the side pieces of the spoiler still on the rear quarters. And it would still result in a clean Carfax.

So I'd stay away from it even if the price weren't way too high for what now amounts to a 2015 base model FR-S with yellow paint.

Those tail lights are definitely not original 2015 design

Want to know the history? read the Carfax. It says it was repossessed and sold at auction. I would guess they stripped the parts off of it and sold them before it got repossessed.

Unfortunately there have been several of them known to have had that fate.

Some guy was selling the whole body kit literally saying that's what he was doing either here or on a FB group.

LOL

The holes in the front bumper make it look as if it had a TRD front lip installed before. So many questions! :iono:

Or was. I think the poster above that confirmed it was repossessed is correct. Some dude was running late on payments and knew he was going to lose his car (and whatever equity he had in the car), so he traded parts out to make some cash before the repo man showed up.

Car was crashed, no vin tag on the the trunk lid, pictures grainy but looks like the tag was painted over, so it's a respray likely of a trunk taken off another car that crashed into something with their front end. (How do I know? Because I've now owned two such trunks, thanks crappy body shops!)

Pull out the spare and foam holding the tools to see how far the metal reworking goes. Might've been backed into a wall light enough to just cause enough damage, however there's no pictures from a high angle showing the rear glass and roof, 'lets tint the rear so they don't notice it's not factory glass' me thinks it got hit hard enough to shatter that, which in my car that would have totaled it out.

If you want a cheap yella furs and you have a keen eye for body damage it might be worth the gamble, if you want a hassle free car in good condition this is a hard pass.

Edit with pics for those lazy if autotrader cooperates:

tag should be to the right of the cord that goes to the license plate light and trunk release:

i think what is still baffling about this one is that there is no push button start/dual zone climate control. Didn't all the RS1.0 have that?

If true, I still wouldn't buy it. Stripping the car shows a childish intent to defraud the lender out of sheer malice. Someone who would strip it would likely also take it out and beat the shit out of it. I wouldn't trust what's left.

On the other hand, I'm not sure this is what happened, simply because the side portions of the rear spoiler were still on the rear quarters when it was repossessed and made its way to the dealer in Florida. If you were selling parts from it, you wouldn't sell the incomplete center section by itself. Apparently whoever stripped it went to the trouble of swapping out the push button start for a keyed ignition. Someone going to that level of trouble to get everything off the car wouldn't forget those side pieces.

Maybe instead an irresponsible dipshit wrecked it, didn't have insurance on it and stopped making payments, so the lender repossessed the wreck and auctioned it off to someone or some company that put it back on the road with the cheapest parts available.

If it was repossessed and auctioned off after being wrecked, whoever rehabbed it might have had another wreck sitting around from which they scavenged ignition parts rather than having new fobs programmed. Plenty of wrecked 86s end up in the auctions in Florida.

PetrolioBenzina 01-09-2019 03:37 PM

Why would you not put the fricken' tools away and clean the trunk if you post for-sale pics?

Just in case anyone is unaware, you can click the Carfax on this listing and see the full history of the car.

That link says it's "free" but it redirects to something where you have to pay to see it?
