whiteout vs. asphalt
such a hard choice! :eyebulge:
Shades of gray, life in a Hercules display.
Of the two, Asphalt... |
Flip a coin... :D
it might depend on what your dealer can get quicker. I like Whiteout, but Asphalt was my next choice.
Asphalt. Regreting the white, any chip on the bumper shows the black underneath :(
im patient when it comes to getting the color i want. it seems wrong to leave it up to whatever the dealer can get in first.
that is interesting though... so rock chips show up as black on the whiteout? hm. |
Paint is already pretty thin on the bumper, but i have a little pebble chip in my bumper and you can see a black dot on the bumper already.
I did white with a full clear bra, Mirror bra, headlights and splash guards. I love white.
I'm also curious about this. I am deeply in love with white, but I fear those black rock chips...they are extremely annoying.
Can anyone with a Whiteout chime in to if they are appearing already? Also, how much do the clear bra's cost, and how visible are they? |
asphalt was my first choice but end up with argento didn't want to wait
I had the same decision to make. Eventually went with the Whiteout and never looked back.
white would have been the only choice for me, if it was plain gloss white instead of pearl... so i went with asphalt instead...
Chiming in.
I have a whiteout (satin white pearl) FRS. I got it clear bra'd within a week of buying the car. You want to get the bra right away so that you dont have chips showing through under the bra/ creating air pockets and bubbles. I have used the same guy for the past 6 years on my cars so he gave me a bit of a discount and did custom parts for me as well. I had the following clear bra'd: Front Bumper Headlights 12 inches into the hood and down the fenders on the same line Painted section of rear view mirrors very aggressive splash guards Here is the line we created for the splash guards: http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...21013130_n.jpg I paid $350 total for my work to be done. I believe a dealer would have wanted around $1000 for similar work. I think my friend charges in the 4-600 range for a normal customer and it depends on what you have done. I bet what I had done on my car would have been around $5-550 or so. I say that you should just get the car you want. I love the satin white pearl. My 07 sti was this color, and I always regretted selling it. Such a rare color for that car. Also remember that you can always repaint the bumper for a couple hundred bucks as well, but pearl colors are a lot harder to paint match, so it may be easy to tell that it was repainted depending on the skill of the body shop. I hope that helps you make your choice. |
Oof, how much do you think it would cost to just get the front bumper bra'd?
And it's the same color as the 07 STi's white? My brother has one of those, I'm not sure how I feel about that color. :( |
im kind of concerned the white doesn't have the same kind of "shine" the other colors do. does the metalic in the asphalt come through a lot? i've seen whiteout in person, but not asphalt.
If you guys have questions on color, just go find any subaru in satin white pearl. It is the same color and looks really good on this car. It is a $220 upgrade, but honestly its a great color. I get compliments on the shade of white all the time. I believe the 2011 sti is available in SWP as well.
636, I am not sure on the price to do a front bumper alone. Maybe $250-$300 from the right person? I was told it was a really easy car to clear because it has so many flat areas as well. Check your local forums and see who they recommend, then get a quote. Clear bra has come a long ways since the old stuff we see yellowing on everyone's cars. Mine has a 6 year warranty on it. If it looks bad before that, it gets replaced at no cost. Most installers are pretty proud of the way newer applications are done. It will definitely keep the car looking great. Well worth the $ imo. |
I was torn between both colors as well. I even had the choice available at the dealer same day. I originally was set on Asphalt but after reading up on the high demand for whiteout I started to really consider whiteout. I was concerned about having aftermarket pieces painted to match pearl white but saw that it was no problem as many pieces were being sold prepainted.
I was so close to choosing the whiteout but fortunately I convinced myself to stick with my gut and I went with my original choice of asphalt. I think the rainbowish glaze from the pearl was bothering me and I didnt see it growing on me in the long run. To each their own though. Either way, I think the $220 is such an insignificant cost addition for this color if you really like it. I wouldn't even consider the $ as a factor. Color is a big deal. Good luck. |
im leaning towards the white. do you think it makes it look too bulky? you know, since the darker colors are more "slimming"
Whiteout for summer, Asphalt for winter.
Asphalt. look at it under the sun, i love the look of the flake in the paint
I had the same decision to make when i ordered both colors but i was leaning towards asphalt but i wanted to see which will come in first... and i knew it was ment to be when i got the call and said the asphalt arrived before the white. Every time someone compliments me on the car they also compliment me on the color, i totally agree.. its so sexy to look at plus you dont notice that its dirty unlike the white. ive ran over puddles with my car and you couldnt even tell i have splash marks unlike my white car... so go for the Asphalt, you wont regret it.
People concerned about rock chips need to remember that the rest of the car, besides the bumper, will be silver underneeth the paint, which stands out more on a dark color. In general darker colors are much harder to maintain.
My Legacy was DGM, which is the same as Asphalt and I liked it. It didn't show dirt and was a great non "flashy" color I definitely like the white on my BRZ more. Its a nice subtle pearl and I think the dullness to it will make door dings and other imperfections not stand out as much over the years. However, this white is a 3-stage paint and will be more difficult for a body shop to match as well as be more expensive to repair. Even my touch up paint cost more than the rest of the color line, because it came in two bottles. In the end its pretty subjective. |
If you drive 1000 miles without a clear bra on the white, you will have a polka dot dalmatian front bumper.

We can all thank Subaru for the thin paint btw.
I had some rock chips after 1k miles but they were all from one event where I drove through a really bad construction area. There were 1-2" pieces of concrete raining on my car from people kicking them up in front of me. At one point several pieces where sitting on my hood rolling around. I was almost crying until I found an offramp to gtfo. Those are the only chips on the car. I touched them up and am putting a clear bra on the bumper today.
Im not even going to try to defend Subaru's paint quality, but all new cars have water based paint now for environmental reasons and tend to suck. Just something to think about before you get too down on your new car. |
Also consider Opti-Coat if you want some protection against small rock chips. It makes it much easier to wash clean as well.
i love my Asphalt, and dirt/scratch marks dont show.
Well, here's my brother's 2007 Subaru STi. It has 45,000 miles on her, and yes, she is very dirty (bugs). But you'll notice there are only 4-5 black spots from where the paint has been taken off, and that's because we dropped it by accident when we took the front bumper off. Only one of them I see being a rock chip, and that's the one at the top of the bottom lip.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8141/7...1f8dc3e2_c.jpg (VERY high res Here.) Keep in mind, we've driven from Connecticut to Florida and back in this thing, so she's seen her fair share of roads. Used to be a northern car, and we used to offroad it, hard. (So hard it's missing her fender linings...good times. :D) So you're saying that since 2007, the paint has degraded in quality? This is the SAME EXACT Satin White Pearl color code as the Whiteout FR-S. |
Thats interesting because I had a WRB 2007 STI, hence my name blu_, and its front bumper after 40k miles really needed a respray. It was god awful, like someone had sandblasted it. That paint is also water based.

It could be an issue with quality control I guess. Maybe you just had a better paint job. I know there were issues on the 2008 STI where people had paint chipping/flaking off the hood. |
Yeah, I initially wanted whiteout going to the dealership, but they had the asphalt on display. I had never even considered asphalt until then. It was either raven or whiteout. But I fell in love with the asphalt. You have to see it in person. There's just so much depth in that colour. Not to say the whiteout isn't gorgeous. I still stare whenever I see one in the street. I really don't think you can go wrong either way. It's a car that's just so easy to love.
My original choice was Whiteout but fell in love with the Asphalt once I saw it in person.
Asphalt +1... |
I was also someone who wanted the whiteout, but i found the asphalt to be much more pretty to look at
Went to the dealer to look at a Whiteout or maybe one of the shades of blue, walked out with an Asphalt on the spot...
