It looked like the guy that poked his head out from the garage told the passenger not to open it until the door came down..FK!

cyde01 05-19-2011 11:22 PM

awesome!!!! doesn't sound like they used uel headers!!!

ichitaka05 05-19-2011 11:26 PM

^For NA to use uel header is rare... but again, I'm talking from Subie experience and not Toyota

Franisco 05-20-2011 12:05 AM

Is there any difficulty with them using el, or are you just saying they never do it?

xantonin 05-20-2011 12:12 AM

Not sure I like the turn signals near the center.

Might help other drivers see if they can move them to the corner more...

uel header have tendency of bring CEL. It sure is one of nightmare NA Impreza owner have... but that doesn't stop Toyota/Subaru from using the. Also kinda waste of material.

Here's my uel

When you install it, it looks like this (pic isn't mine)
http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0016_large.jpg

see how it's near oil filter & oil pan? while el looks like this

Here's OEM header vs OBX header

and it doesn't rap around oil filter or oil pan

I don't know Subaru as well as you, but if you want high hp don't you want to use a equal length header instead of the UEL header? So basically UEL is a poor choice for high horsepower? I remember reading that in an article. Also something about UEL screwing up cylinder 2 and 4 and causing a failure? So is the only reason for UEL for that deep rumble? Any other benefit?

NikostC 05-20-2011 01:13 AM

UEL gives better mid range power while EL gives better high range power / peak power IIRC.

xantonin 05-20-2011 01:17 AM

Can someone add these abbreviations to the terminology thread? Or are they there already? *goes to look*

Hm... that's not fully true. Look at turbo ver headers. they're uel. I highly doubt they gonna use uel just to break the engine.

yes, el header can get more hp than uel... but that's in high rpm. While low rpm uel have more hp.

My opinion, it's all up to personal. Some ppl claim uel get more hp w their setup. While some ppl claim el get more hp w their setup.

tranzformer 05-20-2011 01:23 AM

As I said I don't know much about this so will defer to you. I found the article that I remember reading several weeks back.

Quote:

When modifying WRX/STIs, it is important to plan for the type of the aftermarket Subaru exhaust manifold (header) your will be getting. Unequal length header will allow you to keep the Subaru Boxer rumble sound, yet unequal length header is a poor choice for high horsepower applications where you want to maintain equal Exhaust Gas Temperatures among all cylinders and safe turbo inlet temperatures.

Since header runner for cylinder 4 is the longest on unequal length headers (on WRX/STI), you have the highest EGT in that runner and on cylinder 4. This is because hot exhaust gases travel longer in the longer runner. Cylinder 2 runner is the second longest. Since you are continuously subjecting cylinders 2 and 4 to higher heat than other cylinders it is very common to see various cylinder 4 and cylinder 2 failures in Subarus.

Shorter runners of cylinders 1 and 3 provide for lower EGT on those cylinders. However, since the temperature drop is less than in cylinder 2 and 4 runners, higher-temperature exhaust gases get transferred to the turbo, subjecting the turbo to additional heat stress.

Equal length manifold (header) smoothes exhaust pulses of the Boxer engine, thus changing the exhaust note to smooth vs. burpy. Some refer to it as a “ricer sound”, however it is really not that bad. Equal-length header is optimal for maintaining equal EGT between all cylinders and delivering a constant, lower-temperature exhaust gas to the turbo. Equal length header is a must have for any higher horsepower Subaru WRX STI.

That article could be all wrong?

iff2mastamatt 05-20-2011 01:33 AM

:w00t: It's nice to hear the boxer roar a little bit. :thanks::thanks::thanks:

Nice find & I totally agree w the article. Specially if you wanna push over 400hp. BUT I'm only talking bout stock/OEM.

Subaru knows this... but why they still use uel on S series STI (S202, S203, S204, S402)? If they really want, they can make el headers for them.

Answer to this, IDK. Only Subaru knows. But thing I know is boxer engine have more stuff to worry than putting more stress on #2 & 4 cylinder. btw, #3 cylinder have higher chance of comp ratio failure than #2 & 4. Why? IDK

Number 1 thing they need to worry is crank bearing. higher the rpm goes, boxer engine have more chance of having crank bearing failure. I want to know how Toyota gonna solve this problem, cuz I'm expecting this car to at least beat GC series Impreza redline.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Well kinda since the issue seems a bit more complex. ;)

Franisco 05-20-2011 02:41 AM

Wow..seems like something simple but its definitely not. Thanks ich
