"New to cars" What headers n front pipe should i get?
Hi,
I'm new to car seen and i just got a 2015 Scion FR-S Release 1.0. I want to get a headers and front pipe and i did my assignment(researched) about them. I kinda digging the Tomei UEL Headers and the HKS Dual Resonated front pipe with my TRD Quad Tip Cat-back Exhaust. What y'all think? Also do i need to tune it? Thanks, Krewcial |
Great! Grab a tune while you're at it or you'll get a check engine light and be leaving some power on the table.

Might as well get an over pipe while you are at it? It goes between the header and front pipe.

Congratulations on the buy! Any pictures yet? For what it's worth, aside your catback section, the rest of the exhaust fits identically; so when searching for parts, you can interchange BRZ/FRS and not look for the release model specifically.
For tuning, it may be easiest to buy an open flash tablet. Plug it in, flash the map, drive. Lets you monitor data in real time and there are tuners who can give you custom maps for whatever you do in the future |
Boi, enjoy the car first. Headers won't give you magical powers to pass the minivans bullying you

Match the Tomei header with their overpipe

These are good pieces on the back end. You can get Gruppe-S uel with overpipe for the price of the Tomei (basically same design and quality). Whatever you choose stock over pipe is tiny so getting one is a must. I had HKS Dual Resonated FP with HKS legamax, sound was great If money is a concern I would get the OFT as others have said in place of the trd catback. OFT and UEL will bring the car alive |

Edit: also, I would suggest keeping a cat in the FP. I was catless for a while and my car stank like woah. Hated it. |

Didn't have any cracks in mine but yeah with no cat at all I was getting bad smell. Went with a hooker headers catted/ Helmholtz resonated FP. Still flows great and keeps the sound/smell down |
I can't find the hooker FP, any link plz?
|
I dunno man, I find that E85 smell from 2 fewer cats are better than caffeine in the early morning... It'd be boring to be that loud without the smell.

Gruppe-s UEL,OP and Heat shield it is. Pre ordered from @Gruppe-s

That being said, if you have money to burn and see forced induction in your future, a tuner can get you set up with ecutek fairly easily which CAN have more features, and supports FI. Check out the software tuning section. There's a few threads on the subject of comparing them. For reference, I use an OFT. |

What Spuds said. OFT for basic UEL headers EcuTek for specialty headers like ACE or Nameless Ive had both setups. Gruppe-s with OFT is very good, going to ACE/Ecutek is another step up but not a huge increase like going FI |
The main thing with Ecutek is insuring you have a capable tuner, just because someone says they are a "master tuner" doesn't mean jack squat.
Look in, around and out of your area for shops that specializes in motorsports and the twins. I've travel 1k km to the tuner of my choice. The tune is the single most important modification of your car, it can make your car much better, a little better, or end in engine failure. For me, the only viable option is either Ecutek or a stand alone, and tuned on a dyno, even NA with some breathing mods. The Ecutek option is more expensive but I believe, with a good tuner, is the best option for a street car (my 2015 STI was tuned with Ecutek). Plus one of the additional features is a big bonus for me, rev match, I cannot heel/toe my 86 for shit, you can keep launch control and FFS. Research research research. Like with everything, opinions will vary. |
