The 86 on Toyota's Chopping Block ?
|
I'm surprised we've gotten 7 years out of it so far. This -is- a partnership deal, how long do you think Subaru will supply Toyota parts for their line up? There's no use keeping it around longer if they're not changing anything. They know it's time to devote 100% to their next project.
Not that any of this is factual, all here-say |
The 86 on Toyota's Chopping Block ?
If they have no changes planned, just let it die I guess. And I think the 86 is a great gateway drug into the sports car world.
Edit: I’m just mad, don’t mind me lol. I want a second gen with a larger engine but otherwise I’m just gonna be mad. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I'll be sad if the 86 was axed, but then maybe the value will hold up / increase over time?
|
As long as they chop the roof into a targa top.
|
So glad i got mine while it's still available!

I hope it gets chopped. This is one the best cars I've ever owned and plan on making it a weekend vehicle at some point. Not having a "better version" available will help me sleep at night! no, 2020 supra doesnt count...

The king (86) is dead, long live the king (Supra)
|
Toyota wants to simplify their lineup. Subaru is bleeding money at a painful rate. Doesn't look good for the continuation of the FT86, and really doesn't look good for a second generation.
But the fact is - no one knows. If Toyota is stubborn, they can tell Subaru to keep cranking them out. And remember, at this point, the car is developed and pretty much "finished." It's just pure profit now (even if it's a small profit). I think this probably means we won't get a second gen. |
Make way for more SUVs, cross-overs and pick-up trucks! Woo-hoo!
|
Can't wait for the 2024 GT86-Cross (like that horrid mitsubishi Eclipse CUV).

Considering the Automotive News source and understanding that Lentz is first and foremost a finance guy, the speculation may hold up.
It's also been said by other Toyota execs that going forward, cars and crossovers will be built on TNGA platforms. That's a problem for Subaru that most likely wouldn't be allowed to retool for TNGA and isn't profitable enough to consider it anyway. https://pressroom.toyota.com/tnga/ Besides, the TNGA C segment platform may not be able to accommodate a boxer engine and hybrid power unit. Toyota said that most of their cars will have HSD power units within a few years. If the speculation is accurate, there could be massive incentives by the middle of next year to clear out the remaining '19 MY 86's. More speculation, but there could be some deals available on the TRD's especially, there are more of them within 200 miles of me than any other 86 model according to CarGurus. |
It's such a niche car I'm not surprised.

I would wager a guess they're waiting on how the Supra sales turn out to determine what they want to do with the 86. Im also guessing that being a collaboration car, it might complicate things a little as they'd have to figure out if they want to take over the project strictly in house or keep collaborating (whether with Subaru again or with someone else). Akio Toyoda wants a 3 sports car lineup and the Supra most likely cannot replace the 86 in its segment (lowest end Supra still likely costs a bunch more than GT trim 86.....might overlap with a TRD edition though) I suppose if they go in house it'd be on the TNGA platform...which they only have 2 RWD variants currently...the ones used for the Lexus cars (likely off limits to mere Toyota badged models) and one used for the Toyota Crown (if they can scale that down to 86 size...). |

That is just the way it is. As far as the Supra goes, I suspect that the cheapest Supra, the 4 cylinder, will be close to twice as expensive as the 86. |
Toyota has eloped with a sexy German, left poor ole Subaru holding the bastard child...

I agree... the circle LED is very iconic and at night will not be mistaken for another car. The new 17+ tail lights still look good, but are too common to every other car with LED straight line tail lights that Hyundai, Kia, Audi, pretty much every other manufacturer uses. Also don't know why they didn't make the bottom of the tail light light up on the new design. Looks like they copied valenti's but (literally) only half assed it. |

So will Subaru keep the BRZ?
|
At least there's the new Corolla hatch lol

They will keep it and rename it the Subaru Extinct ! EX edition :) 22R |

We don’t even know if the BRZ/86 are cancelled yet, but I can’t see them keeping it if it does get cancelled..have you seen the sales lately? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If toyota does that (oh, pleasepleasepleaseplease, PLEASE!!!), I WILL buy one even though I don't need another car! |

How about JRSC? My car should be 150% original, right? But I have Valenti taillights. Then, my FRS becomes 140% original ... I guess

Everyone? I would burn the car to the ground before I put on Valentis lights. |
The day you bought your 86 / FRS / BRZ , if you bought it from a Toyota/ Subaru dealer new , that would be considered 100% original ( of course certain maintenance pieces will get swapped out over time, oil filters, tires, brake pads....etc). The only add on's that don't detract but enhance in most peoples eyes are protective add on's.
In other words, if you go to sell your car and have a K&N oil filter on, no potential buyer should sweat you on that change. If you go to sell, and have some kind of FI, that's another story |

I hope they keep making these cars, the miatas are still around after all these years. Need this car to stay around and become the learning ground for future drivers. Easily one of the greatest handling cars. Maybe they should do a gen 3 with a FA25, 2.5L version with say 250hp. This is what I wanna see, they did it with the WRX. They should follow the same process. An extra 50hp would be perfect and squeeze a little more with bolt ons. FA25 “Make it happen Toyota please” |

My biggest problem with this article...how did this guy get to his conclusion of a specific number like 0 percent? Did he get confirmation that Toyota was absolutely certain they're cutting those cars to get 0 percent? Mainstream japanese sports cars rarely get changed fast, NC Miata took 10 years, S2000 10 years, RX-8 9 years and the 370Z is still running at 9 years. 86/BRZ is currently at 6-7 years.
This sounds of conjecture to me, so I'm not grounding any conclusions from it. |
