Hot dang, I'm gonna get me two of those, one for each bank of cylinders.

Hell, with an a-dapter kit and some piping from Home Depot, I can have me a twin turbo-ed FR-S for less that $400. -:happyanim:

Just be sure to get the high temp PVC piping and you'll be fine. What could go wrong?

Impureclient 09-13-2018 10:41 PM

So for real, what is the deal? If you look up on Amazon the have turbo kits for $200-300 all day long. What are they made of wood or something?

“Fits all” with no piping, fittings or anything else. Low grade castings, sleeve bearings and overall crap parts. The perfect thing for those that just want to say they have a “turbo”. They probably sell millions of them.

They kind of have good ratings though, not that you can 100% trust online reviews. Is it really $4k+ worth of bent pipes, fittings, and bearings the only thing that differentiates a good kit and a Walmart one?
That seems like it would be sort of easy to cobble together and fix. As far as bad casting, would it just rip apart? I really just can't see how it goes from $150 to $4000.

Thank you.

You couldn't pay me $4k to put this on my poor little car. I think we can all imagine the inevitable end result of this....

fx1mark 09-14-2018 12:18 AM

I'm going to put one on my riding mower.

I'm thinken ol @Ultramaroon is looking at it pretty hard.

To give him a boost, I ask Bubba to put together a prototype. It has the basics, it jest needs a bit of refinement.

What about it Ultramaroon -

Walmart is trying very hard to adopt Amazon's ecommerce model. These products are sold by 3rd party vendors through Walmart's portal

It would self destruct as soon as you put any real boast through it. It is really just a fancy version of this: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Car-...822332556.html

It looks the part of a real turbo but that is where it ends. It took the name brand expert engineers a couple of years to develop a proper turbo for these cars do you really think that you can just grab an off the shelf "universal" one and have it work properly? Have all the reputable vendors been ripping everybody off all this time?

And what's wrong with getting something for nothing, forever- and it only costs $6.77 - :iono:

This is a typical ebay turbo special from DNA motoring: http://dnamotoring.com/web/

This type of $100-$600 turbo specials you find on amazon, eBay, or now walmart are super well known for having sketchy wastegates that don't let you control boost properly. Seen plenty of these at my friends shop that require quite a LOT of modification and work just to get them to work right, and after that they last maybe a 12-18 months in racing scenarios before something blows or gets stuck blowing the motor as well.

Yep The trip home went much better than the trip there. My bag is still sitting in Atlanta though. It will come home tomorrow according to Delta.

This type unit was used far too often by guys on the Mitsu forum that thought they could turn their base Lancer into an EVO for a couple of hundred bucks. Most ended up spending at least another $2k just to get them working at all. The majority of the kits required some sort of custom adapter to be made just to attach the to the exhaust. Since there were no tunes for them that all had to be done as custom and that added another $500 to $1K. Just getting more air into the engine means nothing if the engine can't be tuned to use it. Of the few that were willing to go far enough to get them to work at least 90% blew it up within a year. As you said many took their engines with it. I got to look at one failed one in person and the manufacturing was so bad that there was not a hope in hell that it was ever intended to last. There wasn't even any way for it to receive oil and the castings looked like they had been poured in Play-doh.
If people want to be able to say "hey look at my turbo" or "I bought a kit but just haven't put it in yet" this is a great buy but if you want any sort of actual performance and reliability skip it and buy the real thing from a reputable vendor.

Yep, that's exactly what he runs into. I feel bad for him because then his shop gets bad reviews down the line and they blame him for it. They are incredibly hard to tune, because as soon as you ask the owner to put money into at least a proper waste-gate setup for them they usually complain because that costs more anyway :iono: People are sad some times.

Also as for the custom work, it's really about the same as one would get into for a tuner kit from say garret or honeywell, definitely a custom welded manifold and such

Bent pipe may not be critical, but bearings are kind of important to a mechanism that relies on them to be able to spin.

Why poo poo that?

Y I remember back in the 50s, I got one of those fan whirly things and mounted it between the carburetor and intake manifold. It broke up the gasoline particles and mixed them with the air better so that the engine consumed less gasoline and increased HP.

I didn't have a dyno but it increased my top speed up to 87 MPH and reduced my 1/4 mile time down to 26 seconds.

So there!

Item listed on Ebay is kinda misrepresented.

A short block has things in it other than air. Item shown is a BARE block.

The item is listed at an "Engine Motor Short Block Assembly".

Is it an engine or motor, short block? Does a motor have a "block"?

Are all the holes included? Or just the ones shown?

humfrz

Technically, it's correct. It's an engine motor as opposed to an electric motor.

I'll stick with the old school definition:

"The real difference, is the fact that "motors" run on electricity, while "engines" run on combustion. ... On the rare occasions we encounter one, we refer to a steam locomotive as an engine, the same word that we give to the motive power of an aircraft. But all electrical devices are driven by motors."

Now, lemmie be - :D

I used to get all hot under the collar about that too. Thermodynamically, the difference between a simple transducer and a heat engine, blah blah...

I finally gave up. Nobody but you or I gives a shit.

I can go to China and buy a GT2871R copy for about $90 for a journal bearing, before shipping.

Buy enough of them to reduce your landed cost and selling it for 100% margins isn't really that hard.

Plus, Walmart is really trying to capture that 3rd party seller/marketplace like Amazon, it's high margins for them.

Yep, the discussion can get quite involved:

Want a "turbo" down their pants? On their tricycle? Or what about sticking it on the sound generator tube thingy.. what would it do?? Probably muffle the sounds but could set it up to swoosh and pop...

Simple. An engine can be a motor but a motor in not always an engine. The word has nothing to do with fuel source but just the function it completes.
