Rims vs Wheels

I just wanna throw this out there. The fast and the furious is over. It's 2012.

Toilets have rims, cars have wheels. Use the right term, spare yourself the eye rolls you're gonna get.

Edit: Since the tongue-in-cheek wasn't apparent enough in using the term "toilet" in the post as well as The Fast and the Furious...

I just want to throw this out there, for you.

There's different words for things. Slang exists. It's not really confusing. Use discretion and spare us having to scroll through useless threads like this.

A snarky facebook status would have sufficed for this one.

Sincerely,

A guy who says "wheels" and not "rims" but isn't offended.

The post is satire on the slang term... I asked Ichi to move this to the Off Topic section, which he did. My fault for putting it in the wheels section.

I was selling some wheels on Craigslist a while back and a guy emailed me saying, "Your title of 'Wheels for Sale,' is misleading because they're just rims. Wheels are rims&tires together. You should change your title." It was a level of "Wut?" that was hardly comprehensible.

n2oinferno 07-28-2012 12:11 AM

It's annoying, but oh well, people are ignorant. Annoys me when people say "tints" too.

That would have been quite the touche-moment.

Just quietly... a rim is a part of a wheel.

That was always what I thought...the rim is the part towards the edge of the wheel where the tire mounts or makes contact...

and saying "rims" sounds like what little kids say... :)

Sony 07-29-2012 01:34 AM

I don't see why people are making a huge deal out of this. It's just shorthand/slang for the same thing, we all understand what someone means when they say "rims" when referring to a car. Also technically wouldn't "wheel" be the term for the Rim and the Tire combined together as one unit? I always assumed the Rim was one component of the Wheel and the Tire was the other and combined they make one wheel. Same goes for wheels on a bicycle or a motorcycle.

For instance people who call the Alternator on your car a "Generator" are technically wrong, it is an Alternator NOT a Generator. Alternators create AC current, Generators create DC current, your car has an alternator which creates AC current, which is then turned into DC to charge your batteries by your voltage regulator. Also your Alternator is made by combining two components, a Stator and a Rotor which combined make an Alternator. However if one calls it a Generator you instantly know what they are talking about.

TL,DR: stop being so freakin technical/PC and let people say what they want to say. It's not hurting anyone, it's not like they are calling the transmission the engine.

My .02 cents

When I see or hear "rims", I just go ahead and assume they're chrome.

haha...exactly! And I don't believe "rims" can technically be any smaller than 20"s...

What, you've never been to RimsRack.com?

Funny thing is, if you type that into Google, the first result is TireRack. :bellyroll:
