86 Airbag installed!

So I've gotten rid of all the Scion emblems outside of my car and replaced them with Toyota badges, BUT that big ass SCION in staring at me everyday from my steering wheel just kept annoying me. lol. So I ordered the 86 Airbag from Luis at Carson Toyota and picked it up 2 days ago.

http://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/...4/dbc7e4cd.jpg

Was ready to take it off, had iPad handy to see Synack's DIY of how to take off the airbag and the 86 airbag next to me and found out one problem...

Spot the difference?

The JDM airbag is a single-stage airbag while the USDM FR-S is wired up for a Dual-Stage airbag. So after an extensive google search researching airbags and seeing if a swap was even possible without interrupting the functionality of the dual-stage system, I came across a Lexus forum where someone actually just switched out the "bomb" that goes in the center. So I, with all my wisdom to risk ruining my car's airbag and the new one I spent $800+ on, decided to go forward and change them out. I just used a 5/16 socket and socket wrench and swapped them out.

http://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/...4/c0600a6f.jpg

Tightened everything back up, connected all the wire harnesses back in and ground wire, lined up the airbag with the holes and pushed in and heard it click into place in all 3 slots.

Here it is...

Someone should just fabricate the outside piece and save everyone money

Your stereo still says scion

I agree, but the problem is that there is no outside piece. The whole thing is the airbag assembly. The only part you could take apart without screwing up the whole thing was the "bomb".

And my stereo doesn't say anything thank you very much.

Anyway it's only there until someone makes a unit that fits in the slot perfectly without fit kits.

800 dollars for a logo change is absolutely absurd.

I doubt they will. There are so many different size and shaped stereo unit holes any they won't try to make ones to fit them all. If you do end up finding one then let me know. But unless you are planning on buying an upgraded stock model you will more than likely have to buy the fillers.

Yeah I'm already prepared for that, but I'm not in a rush. I am already eyeing a Kenwood GPS/DVD HU. I like how they have the Garmin integrated into it, since I have a garmin in my FJ, makes life easier.

Oh I see.

Well then sell it without the bomb since we can't use it anyway.

Should save us a little.

Eh, absurd? Depends who's opinion it is. Looks kinda stupid when you got Toyota everywhere but Scion on the steering wheel. Plus, the money isn't much of an issue for my on gratification. If money was my biggest concern, I wouldn't have even bought this car. I already have an FJ Cruiser and a motorcycle for the curvy stuff.

Haha  jokes aside, titusdrake has a point and I personally agree with him. I would never pay $800 for that either, even if I wasn't a poor college student, but that's just me. To each their own.

As long as you are happy with the purchase, good for you! There are plenty of other things people "waste" their money on.

mattles 07-26-2012 11:45 PM

looks good. Not quite 800$ good, but your car is now unique. That uniqueness to some people is worth everything.

Nice install and mod. Now go out and test it out to make sure you connected all the wires properly and in fact the dual stage system is still functional.

1%er? Man I wish. Someday maybe lol. I don't go to USC to aspire to be poor. I'm there with you on the college student part but I gotta spend my deployment money on something hahaha. All in all, I know it's not something many will do, and I'm ok with that. I'm totally happy with it. Thanks bro!

It's not uniqueness that I seek, it's not doing things half-assed. Feel me? But yeah, I am totally realistic and keep thinking "fack $800 was too much" but oh well, it makes me happy and well some other people spend their money on far worse things to make them happy. :)

Already have. No lights on. I plugged everything in exactly the same way as t was unplugged. (lucky for me they were color coated) haha. Thanks!

Those are next on my list. Waiting to see if my buddy (who is going to study abroad in Spain) can get them cheaper than what I have seen them for ($300+ for floor mats, 180 for trunk mat)

denkigrve 07-27-2012 12:14 AM

Nice work dude! Thanks for the post of how to change out the bomb. It should help others get the same type of setup going. :D

Hopefully, you'll never need to find out if your airbag still works properly :party0030:

TRD_86 07-27-2012 02:04 AM

I think you can sale that single-stage stage bomb back to someone may need it from other country for $400 :) lol;
Now I'm curious if it is possible to find the manufacture in Japan that made the airbag then just buy the black 86 cap assembly part without that single-stage metal bomb part !???

Yeah I hope so too, but I'm pretty sure it does since the only difference was the bomb. Let's never find out though. :)

Thanks! I gotta find someone to buy this thing now. Yeah it would be nice to be able to get the airbag without the bomb.

Absurd yes. But if you are well off then I salute you for being a pioneer. I hope u will do some sick performance and/or sound system upgrades as well

Phenominal! Good job and thanks for the write-up.

sal 07-28-2012 01:21 PM

You my friend, are a baller shot caller. Can't you just buy the damn steering cover piece?

You can try and sell the scion cover to an 86 owner in japan lol.

Mr. Mcoupe 07-28-2012 01:25 PM

There is a person in another country that wants your Scion stuff. Do a trade. Shipping costs only ftw.

I drive an SC400 with Toyota Soarer stuff including airbag- traded with an Aussie for my Lexus stuff. He feels special and I enjoy confusing the Lexus people at the dealership when I show up for my free carwashes.

imravenit 07-28-2012 01:41 PM

to each his own! :) its pretty cool imo.. thanks for the write up!

ngabdala 07-28-2012 01:43 PM

Why didn't you just buy the Subaru and badge it GT86? It would have been cheaper in the long run and you would have got the OEM HID and creature comforts lol

mikeg7827 07-28-2012 02:07 PM

so, if the airbag doesnt deploy because of your "mod" and you die... does that mean your parents have nobody to sue and will have to cope with the fact their child did this to themselves?

also, does this mean you have voided your warranty?

So if you know nothing of how the airbag system works why even comment? I did my research. I know it will work. The only thing that was swapped out was the actual airbag itself. The original system that deploys the airbag remained intact and was connected the way that it came.

Yeah the warranty is voided. So maybe that should be a disclaimer on this write up huh? Damn so maybe I should never drive a car without an airbag again since you know...I will die.

Your comment makes absolutely no sense. So let me buy a Subaru and badge it a gt86? That would entail doing everything I have already done AND changing out the front end.

There is no "cover" the whole thing is the airbag.

I just hate doing things half-assed. Go hard or go home ;). But yeah more upgrades will come eventually. Gotta get all the things that SHOULD'VE came with this car first. EDM GT-86 HIDs are next on the list. Then a new head unit.

Cause the brz front end is ugly? simply buying an hid kit is quite simple. And he can put in whatever stereo he wants.
