My Google-fu has failed me. What does this all tell you about this engine?

USAA replaced the engine in my 2016 FRS at a USAA gold star facility. This is the engine that replaced it.

From what I understand, USAA will replace an engine with one that has less mileage AND is the same or newer year. So this may be a problem. I have some more research to do and LOT more phone calls

Trueweltall 07-10-2018 08:40 AM

I'd be really upset if they put an older engine in my car when you know they revised it because those 13-14s had issues.

guybo 07-10-2018 09:27 AM

I've already been on the phone!

Trueweltall 07-10-2018 10:14 AM

How is USAA treating you so far? I used to have their insurance, had to use it once when I got hit in a parking lot.

ermax 07-10-2018 11:04 AM

Why is your insurance replacing the engine? From a crash or something?

guybo 07-12-2018 08:53 PM

Thx everyone- they put in a 13, said it was a 16. Next week I'm getting a crate engine!

ermax 07-12-2018 11:29 PM

That’s great news! I’m still curious why insurance is replacing it though. Do they provide some sort of coverage for blown engines or was it an auto accident?

GJ, Smack them, smack them hard. :D

I got caught on a flooded street, hydrolocked the engine.

USAA has been good, they get on claims very fast. This problem was a dealership that failed to do their due diligence and look up the block number and check the age of the engine. Hell when I first LOOKED at the engine I knew it was older than a 16. I am not going live with a 13 engine that is known to be a problem. Esp. since the same facility that said it was a 16 also claims the engine only has 38k on it- I don't believe them.

I wish that this was a 16 engine because this engine is great. The fuel trims are spot on, AFR is great, oil pressure is better than the old engine and the butt dyno says it has more power. But I know a main bearing in there is lurking... waiting to spin.

I hydro locked my old Integra and State Farm didn’t do shit for me. Happened on a holiday weekend so the adjuster didn’t look at it for days and by the time they showed up it was starting and running. But it ran for about 1 year before it was drinking oil. I tore it down and you could see the indentation in the cylinder walls where the water was puddled. I bored it to the service limit and put oversized pistons in it but even then you could see the water damage and after a few year it was drinking oil again.

Consider yourself lucky that they are helping you.

It happened just before Memorial Day and it was 4 days before I got my rental. But I didn't complain, everyone wants the weekend off.

There was no saving the engine. The block had 2 new windows! The rods didn't make a bid for freedom but they punched 2 big holes in the top of the block. The heads were tested at the dealership and those were damaged too, so new long block for me. There are no 2016 used engines with 42k or less anywhere to be found so I'm getting a crate 2017 engine.

OTOH I'm glad to get the new revision engine but OTOH It's going to be put in a 2016 car which hasn't been done by this dealership (if anywhere at all) and it's not exactly a 1:1 fit (the manual engine anyway) so I hope they can handle it. It's more than just the intake manifold and header that are different, I understand the wiring harness is different too.

Is the 17 auto engine exactly the same as the 2016?

ermax 07-14-2018 12:29 AM

Must be something about Memorial weekend. That’s the holiday I was referring to when I hydro locked my Integra. Hahaha. When I locked mine I was on an on ramp which dipped down before going back up. I had no where to go. As soon as I noticed it was getting too deep I killed the ignition. I get out in my dress clothes and pushed it back down the ramp. Fun times. But it saved the engine for the most part. I wish I towed in home and pulled the plug and blew the water out rather than try to go the insurance route. It probably would have turned out fine.

Nope. It didn't get all of the changes of the 6mt, but it got the ones that will make this a complicated swap (cam and crank sensors, wiring harness, few other things). The best info I've seen on the swap so far (2017 into a 2013 though): http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=119729

Not clear on whether they ever got it running right.

My wife and went to a park with a beach, it was on a dead end road. We got there and 10 mins later it started to rain real hard. We stayed for a little bit and watched the rain under the shelter. When the lightning started we decided it'd be best to leave.

The road had side roads off it that were flooded badly. So we went forward and the road was totally flooded out, there was a lifted Cherokee that was stuck in it. We were on the dry part of the road on the crown and the only way out was to take a right on an access road behind a shopping center. There was water in the dip, but it didn't look very deep and the only other option was to park it and wait in the rain.

It was a lot deeper than it looked. I could see bottom in most of the puddle but it got very deep and I couldn't see that part of the puddle. Derp. Engine decided it was thirsty and took a drink.

OK, so an update.

I'm getting a new engine, but it is not 2017 spec. It's a 2016 engine, but NIB. I saw it in 4 nice little boxes at the place where they are doing the work. boxes were the block, 2 heads and a gasket kit.

On the top of the block is this number, it is different from the number I got off the other block (that one was on the front of the block on another plate; on this block, I could only get to the plate on the top of the block because it's still in a box) c1323678c1324133

Cross your fingers that they can put it together properly.

Don't think that hasn't been going through my mind!
