Question about dash icons and headlights/fogs/highbeams

Hi Everyone.

Picked up my 2018 86 GT a few weeks ago and finally drove it at night yesterday. I've looked through the manual, but didn't find what I needed so I thought I'd ask.

When the head lights are on: there is no dash icon indicator. Seriously?? I have a 4Runner and RAV 4 and both has a green icon on the dash showing headlights are on. Or is my dash icon for headlights not working??

Highbeams on: blue icon on dash showing highbeams on

Fog Lights: green icon on dash showing fog lights on

Can someone confirm that there is no headlight dash icon indicator? Thanks!

BigTuna 06-27-2018 11:43 AM

Correct. There is no low beam indicator.

If you turn the fog lights on, they only illuminate when the headlights are on also, so you can effectively use the fog light indicator as your low beam indicator.

Never thought about this. I don't believe the pre-2017s have this indicator either.

Just set it on auto.

Sapphireho 06-27-2018 12:54 PM

The fact that the entire dash lights up is a pretty good indicator.

Spuds 06-27-2018 01:00 PM

The entire dash is a lights on/off indicator, at least on my 13.

TooSlow 06-27-2018 01:31 PM

Appreciate the confirmation and the suggestions!

Look out the front windshield if it is dark they are off.

venturaII 06-27-2018 02:15 PM

The knob at the end of the turn signal stalk is a pretty good indicator of whether your lights are turned on or not. Sheesh.

You may also like to know, that the car will not let you know, when your windshield washer fluid runs low. At least on the '13's it doesn't

Why do you need a low beam indicator?

Hey I'm simply asking to see if there is some kind of magic functionality that comes with a low beam indicator that I may not know about. Like an in-car taco maker or something.

PandaSPUR 06-27-2018 04:09 PM

To be fair, the entire dash also lights up when you have lights set to parking mode.

I've driven off a few times with lights still in parking mode lol. Didn't notice headlights were off until I got on a darker local street.

Just pull the trigger function on the left stalk to flash the high beams and you'll know the lows are on.

Hey, the Canadian versions don't get things like that … ya'll got under panels instead. :D

So instead of taco weight I may gain by eating in-car tacos, I get metal weight from under panels. Not sure if I can agree with this.

Well, at least the panels don't fart … :iono:

Nope. Pulling the stalk flashes the bright lights and shows you the high beam indicator on the dash regardless of whether the low beams are on or off.

huh til.

but in any case if it's dark out you'd be able to compare the beams.

Sure, you don't need one, but why do my other Toyotas (and I'm sure other cars) have this feature? For me, didn't notice I liked it till I didn't have that in the 86.

The better question is do other Subarus have this, since this is still mostly a Subie.

That being said, there are always oddities. My '87 Celica had auto-off headlights (they turned off when you opened the door). I've never been able to figure out why that functionality disappeared for twenty or so years on most cars except luxury models - to include this one.

At least it beeps at you if your lights are still on.

TooSlow 06-27-2018 08:03 PM

My cheap 2005 Toyota Matrix's doors automatically locked when the engine started and shifted from P to D. I thought that was really convenient. But my 2016 4runner and 2012RAV4 didn't have this feature. Who knows why Toyota didn't have it on all their cars going forward. Oddities indeed.

Maybe Toyota is more popular among blondes?

Almost. Two clicks would also illuminate the dash and the parking lights, but not the headlights.
