Grooves in brake pads need help

So I bought a 2014 brz last week with 8000 miles. Very clean car with no mods and it appears to be well taken care of however both the rear brake rotors have grooves in them. Not sure why a car with 8000 miles would have that problem. Please help

Brake rotors should never be in contact with anything therefore this shows signs of abuse, and a totaled car.

Welcome to the forum, Krump , and congratulations on your new purchase ….

Most all brake rotors have grooves in them to a degree.

I suggest you show us a picture and maybe we can help you decide whether or not they are "normal".

Here’s the rear driver rotor. The passenger is similar

Thanks for posting the picture, however, due to the rotor being out of focus, I can't tell much.

You have several options:

* quit worrying about it

* if you have a warranty, take the car in and ask them to look at it

* have the rear rotors turned (resurfaced) or replaced

* have the brakes inspected by a brake shop

* if both rear rotors look the same and the car stops good, I wouldn't worry about it

The moment you use your brakes once there are going to be some small grooves forming. I don't see an issue. Especially if they aren't vibrating or making horrible noises. Rotors are relatively cheap too.

I dunno old guys can move pretty fast when they're determined! for a short moment... as in.. to hit someone.

Tcoat 06-19-2018 06:36 PM

100% good. No worries at all.

highway7 06-19-2018 06:47 PM

It's most likely from the car being driven on dirt roads in the past, driven near beaches, on sand, or even contamination on city roads and highways. Basically what has happened is some sort of contaminant is caught in between the pad and rotor, or a pebble had wedged itself into the bottom of where the pad meets the rotor and when the car drives forward, it marked the rotor.

What you can do is take the pads off, clean the rotor and brake pad surface with brake cleaner, relube and reinstall, and hopefully in a few thousand KM the wear evens out. Otherwise your only other option is buying new pads and rotors.

However, this is only cosmetic and your braking should not be affected.
