INSTALLED TURBO, CAR WONT START
 

Hey guys,

I need help. Installed my turbo kit (previously had JRSC kit) and once done, primed turbo and then turned it on. It idled perfectly and I did a datalog for 15min, AFR looked good 14.5-14.9. Revved it to 2k and it shut off on me. Motor turns but it doesn’t start anymore. Sent datalog to Delicious and they said everything looked good, revised and flashed new update and it still doesn’t turn on. I can force it to turn on by giving it gas as I crank it but then it idled terrible so I shut it off. I replaced spark plugs and put new gaskets on injectors while I installed turbo. Any ideas? Looked at turbo and it spins, checked injector gaskets and they’re good. NO codes come up. Please help.

I'll get the serious questions out of the way:

1. Is it plugged in?
2. Has the turbo been installed the right way round?
3. Do you have enough fuel in the tank?
4. Is throttle thingmabob connected and is the flappy thing flapping?

Any small vacuum hoses pop off under the intake manifold?

Doubt it, I clamped those before installing turbo. Delicious said my vacuum looks good but I’m probably going to take off the intake manifold off again to double check

So does it run if you keep the throttle down but die after you let go and let it idle? Just curious because you said you can give it a little gas to get it to crank but dies when you let it idle.

More than likely, the issue isn’t with the kit, most probably with my car in specific. JDL is really understanding and patient, not to mention their kit is really good quality. If you do order one, be prepared to wait up to about 2-3 months.

It’ll stay on when I turn it on that way but it’ll idle so rough that it freaks me out so I shut it off. I don’t understand because the very first time I turned it on, it turned on normal and idled perfectly.

Ok, well one cause of that could be vacuum leak somewhere. Intake manifold... blowoff valve... intercooler hose loose... something. But it wouldn't surprise me if it was a fueling issue or loose connection somewhere. Usually though it would throw a code if you had a loose connection. Hmmm

You didn't leave a rag or bag in the intercooler piping did you? hehe

Well dig around and let us know what you find. Maybe someone else can chime in here with better advice.

A rough idle isn't going to kill anything, but a log of it might help with diagnosis. I do wonder if it's something to do with fuel pump or fuel delivery somewhere. How's the DI ECU grounding connections?

check all cold side piping and make sure everything is tight. Make sure the MAP sensor is correct (plugged in/right one) and make sure your MAF sensor is plugged in as well.

The ground is good, first time I ever did injectors(supercharger it) I didn’t have ground, a code popped up. This time it’s griunded good. I was honking about logging it on the rough idle to better pinpoint it. Also, I was thinking reflashing to one of my old tunes I had for supercharger that didn’t run off the MAF to see if it will turn on and if it does, it’ll be my MAF being bad. Lastly, maybe spark plugs were put in correctly?

I’m making a list of everything to check for when I do it on my next day off. I work a ton and get 1 day off a week.

If I can’t figure it out, anybody know a good shop that specializes in brz near LA?

Checked it, everything looks good

dang, not sure what else to check. the only other thing is make sure the tune has the injectors scaled right and the fuel pump is mechanically functioning is all good. (i doubt the injectors are scaled incorrectly since DT is a pretty reputable tuner.)

The car idles pretty much 100% on the OEM direct injectors so port injector scaling is unlikely to be the issue.

I'd be looking for a vacuum leak or bad electrical connection.

Tuner said vacuum was good but I’m gonna check that again along with all my fuses

Interesting, we just had the same kind of problem with a new engine in the Noble. We fouled that a couple of plugs during startup and the computer saw excess o2 so it added more fuel. Making the problem worse. Disconnecting the battery to reset and putting in new plugs and the problem went away.


A lot of what if, head scratching and some language. And finally a good nights sleep before we got it.
