Please help me. I have a strange rattle, I can't find it.
Its coming from the back, and it sounds like its around the backseat headrest area, or possibly in the trunk. Its not a constant rattle. It doesn't even happen when going over a bump.
Its sounds like a loose piece of plastic or wiring hitting the metal frame of the car somewhere. Like a swinging sound. I'm going crazy. |
I have the same thing in my BRZ, not sure what it is though
|
Could it be that the back seats are not securely fastened? check if the two buttons are pressed down. My car came from dealership with one side unsecured and flopping around.
|
Doesn't seem like it. They are securely in place. I popped the trunk lining on the sides, and taped the wiring to the car to see if that's what it was. I doubt it though well see when i take her out for lunch. If anyone has the same problem, and figures it out please share.

Could it be speaker?
|
Does the sound change with the rear seats up vs down?
You might want to check below thread out. Especially post #38 on page 2. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...?t=7181&page=2 |
Do you have tint? Could be broken tabs in the 3rd brake light.

i have no tint and leave my seats folded down. sounds more like its coming from the spare tire area for me

I do have tint. |
Check that the emergency trunk release handle (glow in the dark handle) is fully seated into its holder.

My rattle was speaker tabs
I bent the tabs that go thru the deck to hold the speakers in place. They weren't bent at all, so I gave 'em a bit of a bend and my rattling is gone. It was TOTALLY annoying.

I'm having the same problem and it drove me crazy. I had my girlfriend lie in the back with the back seats folded over so she can tell me where the sound is coming from. She said it came from "in between the trunk and the back seats from the top section" so I'd say somewhere around the 3rd brake light.
If anyone figures this out, do let us know! |
I think it's the passenger side rear plastic fender well liner. I notice a rattle on mine and can see that liner is able to move around and it even comes out of the wheel well lip at the bottom. Also, when I tap on it, it sounds very similar to what I hear when driving. I'll get the dealer to check out it when mine goes in for an oil change.

If you look at the front of the wheel well opening, there a piece hanging down that looks sort of like a mud flap, but in the front. On mine, I saw that it's just a little bit small which allows it to move around and even move out from behind the slot i's supposed to fit in. The sound is like a tapping sound, like the plastic hitting against the metal lip where it's come out of. I've pushed it back in a couple of times, but it always comes back out. I'm out of town right now, so I'm not able to take a pic of it right now. Hopefully my description hels you to understand what I'm talking about.

I think I may have found it but someone may need to double-check.
I've been having the same problem as OP (sound coming from backseat), and finally took the time to put the back seats down, and move stuff in that area. Right next to the back seat lock/handle there's a piece of plastic that stretches all the way across. It's definitely loose, and over bumps can come into contact w/metal, creating that sound. Unfortunately, I don't have the tools (ie Tape) to fix it right now to see if it solves anything. Anyone tried fastening it down? EDIT: sorry for the big photo. |
I have a loose licence plate frame that makes a louish tick noise occasionally. It wiggles because it doesn't have lower screws or proper slots to hold it to the plate. I can't wait to get my new plate frame from the group buy!

What you really need is for someone else to drive. Get in the back, fold seats down, touch everything and listen everywhere, take a rag and force it between what you think might be making the noise and see if problem solved. Or when the car is parked put rags around/between lots of things, then slowly remove one by one until noise comes back. Process of elimination.

Best of luck finding it! The only rattle I've had so far is the backseat seat belts when the windows are done. Buckling them up has fixed that issue. That and if one of the seatbelt holder snaps are not fastened, they'll chatter.

Check the third brake light cover mine was hitting the rear glass!!
|
It is coming from the rear panel. Someone was driving my car, and the noise started occuring, so I leaned back, and put pressure on the rear deck panel, and it went away. This weekend, I am going to take it off, and look. But I think Coultergeist is on the right track, I will check it this weekend!

I tried putting a shirt around it and the sound wasn't even muffled, making me think it's not the 3rd brake light. |

For the record:
Noise I'm hearing = Sounds like a small stone is dropping on top of the trunk. 1) I tried stuffing a towel in between the glass and the 3rd brake light so that it's like someone pressing down the 3rd brake light, but the noise didn't go away. 2) I tried removing the license plate frame just to make sure it's not that, and the noise didn't go away either. 3) I tried taping the emergency trunk open lever, but the noise didn't go away. The noise become higher pitched when I put the rear seats down, so I'm pretty sure it's coming from either the bottom of the rear dash or somewhere in the trunk. |

The plastic piece mentied a few posts back seems to be an area that can be addressed... Its basically held to metal with six plastic tabs, but has lots of play which could "tap" when the car flexes. The second area of concern was from the passenger rear air bag section. A portion of the wire rests on the metal body and could tap if the car is bouncing around.. I ended up only adding Raam mat to most of the metal deck, the keyfob transmitter area, the soft cover in a couple sections, and behind the airbag loose wire noted above. Overall this change helped lower overall noise from the back, reduced rattle from my 10-inch sub, and tightens up the bass. I will try to sneek some more matt on the plastic "frame" pieces that surround the opening to see if they "tap" any less. Keep on it guys, we will find all the "tap" sources sooner than later.. :party0030: |
