PSA for those running loud exhaust
 

Since its spring time i decided to take the silencers out of my exhaust and let my car clear its throat. However after about 10 minutes of driving my ears started to hurt. Since i have access to a sound meter i thought i would measure and see how loud it really is.

My set up: Ace A250 header and greddy evo 3 catback

Sound level at idle: 85-90 dBC
Sound level cruising: 95-100 dBC
Peak level: 108 dBC

These reading were taken inside the car while driving around town, not even giving it much throttle. At these levels hearing damage can occur quite quickly and if i were at work i would need ear plugs even idling.

Moral of the story is to think twice about running very loud exhaust on the street and consider having your set up measured if you think its borderline.

As much as I lived the Berk dual exit muffler, I traded it for a Works ABM because I got ringing in my ears several times when I stepped out of the car.

Another solution I found. Have stereo system in the car louder then your exhaust. Therefore the exhaust doesn't seem too loud anymore and I can blame hearing issues on speakers instead.

I'm in the "I have already damaged my hearing from past poor choices so what more harm could it cause" club

Consider this an invitation to join the "I have hearing loss, but would like to protect what I have left so I'm not totally deaf in later years" club. Some hearing is a lot more fun than no hearing.

Now if only somebody made a quiet single exit exhaust that isn't center exit...

Still, nothing as bad as seeing Ozzy at the Orpheum in Boston. Holy shit my ears were ringing for a week.

Yeah. Or an "ethnic" wedding (greek, armenian, jewish). extremely loud, high pitch instruments for hours on end. my poor ears. no wonder everyone gets absolutely plastered, you need to dull the ear pain.

Good advice. I have some hearing loss from motorcycles and open wastegate cars. I keep a cat (no stinking) and run mild exhausts these days.

The biggest cause of hearing loss on a motorcycle is actually from wind noise, not exhaust.

I have one of these on my car with just a catless JDL UEL and it isn't too bad.

Im getting older, I blame my hearing loss on my N1 and backseats down and too many concerts. Plus I miss out on the daily ass chewings from the misses. Win win in my book.
