Why it's really called the 86
I was doing some math today to figure out how much power my 86 has measured in ducks rather than horses (because why not), and I discovered the real reason why it's called the 86...
Average weight of a horse: 1,100 lbs Average weight of a duck: 7.5 lbs Weight ratio of duck to horse: 0.0068 Using Kleiber's Law: 1 Duckpower = (0.0068)^0.75 Horsepower = 0.0238 HP 205 HP = 205/0.0238 Duckpower = 8,613 DP Therefore the manual 2017 Toyota 86 has approximately 8,600 Duckpower!! Coincidence?? http://www.ft86club.com/forums/pictu...ictureid=11342 |
Nice mathing!

I don't think it was that complicated. I think it was going to be called GT69 but they realised that 69 has other meanings in certain parts of the world.

That's quite an elaborate theory when the true meaning of the 86 moniker is already widely known.
It relates to the classic Toyota model internal designation AE86, affectionately referred to as "Hachi Roku" to it's considerable cult following. As the very first and most widely used car for drift racing, a genre that developed alongside the introduction of this Toyota model in it's several guises, these cars were legendary. In recognition of this a mandate was added to the new model during development that it must incorporate certain elements of the old model AE86. Certain technical details such as the 86mm square bore and stroke engine make the 86 connection immediate. Also, a clever detail whereby at idle the high pressure fuel pump lobes were tuned, in cooperation with a special development team to match the acoustic propeties of precisely 86 crickets. To learn more about how 86 crickets were studied and duplicated, read here... |

The theory makes sense. It's a little known fact that the "D" in Initial D stands for "duck."

I'm shocked that no one has thought to ask:
How many different average animal weights did you go through to get that math to work? or for that matter that no one thought to chime in on the flip side of the issue: i.e. if rather than 'horse power' or 'duck power' what '{insert correct animal} power' it would take for the 86 to work as a: 86 '{ aforementioned correct animal} power' = 86 |

205/[(3500/1100)^0.75] = 86 Male giraffes can weigh around 3,500 lbs, so you could say that the Toyota 86 has 86 giraffe power (But I think 8,600 ducks sounds more menacing than 86 giraffes). |
Stroke is 86 and bore is 86
