Toyota 86 on Speed Bumps Inquiry

Hello guys,

Just purchased a Toyota 86 last Feb and it is scheduled to arrive at around June or July this year, it's my first time owning a sports car. :) #excited :party0030:

Nonetheless, I would like to ask how the stock 86 deal with speed bumps on the street? I'm expecting to deal with a lot of speed bumps in the near future as this would be my everyday car. I've driven normal sedans before and they don't seem to have any problems on normal speed bumps, well if it's too big I usually approach it an angle.

To the experts and to the long-time owners of the 86, can I apply the way that I drive a normal sedan, say like a Honda accord and a vios when approaching a speed bump? Of course if I spot an unusual speed bump, approaching angle would be the solution.

To anyone that will answer this or give some advice, I'll do appreciate it. Thanks a lot for reading my inquiry, have a nice day you all. :)

Regards from the Philippines.:thanks:

If left at stock height you will just need to drive like most sedans. It isn't really much different.

If you lower it even as little as an inch then speed bumps become your worst nightmare. There are some places I simply can not drive because I just bottom out on the bumps.

+1 for @Tcoat. I have some speed bumps I deal with on a regular basis, and while they may jar you around a bit if you don't take them slow enough, the car handles them fine in stock form.

Vracer111 04-10-2018 12:30 PM

Always approach at an angle with an 86 if you can...will be much smoother experience. And everything will be fine as long as it's not lowered from stock ride height.

strat61caster 04-10-2018 12:32 PM

i drive flat out

finch1750 04-10-2018 12:34 PM

How high are your speed bumps that you have to angle over in a normal sedan???

Jordanwolf 04-10-2018 12:38 PM

Honestly, you might have to raise the suspension about 4 inches and get a larger diameter tire. Current 86's are sold as unworthy street cars and should only be seen driving on the Nordschleife.

burningjello 04-10-2018 12:41 PM

I come from a slammed VW before my FR-S so I may have a different opinion but I have TRD springs that give (I think) 7/8's of an inch drop and I've never scraped or had trouble with any speed bumps. If it is really big I go at an angle though. The only thing to watch is the front of the bumper and curbs, it will hit if you are careless and just slam into parking spots without being aware.

EDIT: Oh and congrats on the new car!

Hello GMIRA, and WELCOME to ...... The Forum .......

Speed bumps ....... I reckon that depends upon what a Philippine speed bump is like. In my area, we seem to have two types ...... one being a wider speed bump, which my FR-S treats like a little "fun ramp". The other type is the narrow, steep kind, that are not to be taken at more than 2 mph, or they will jar the hell out of the FR-S's suspension.

I have found (with my stock height 2013 FR-S) the only clearance issues that I have to deal with are parking stops (as mentioned above) and driveways with a steep crown (in which the resonator in the mid pipe will scrape).

Enjoy your new sports car ....... :)

I am at stock height and have a lip, generally I take most speed bumps at speed without any problems. In fact I take them quicker that most suv drivers. I use to drive a van with a stiff suspension and found taking speed bumps slow was worst. Taking them quicker allowed the suspension to do its job instead of jarring the rest of the vehicle and rattling my teeth.

..think we gotta clarify which speed bumps we're all encountering..

I have 3 of these types of suckers on my way in and out of the complex I live in
http://pacificcoastpaving.com/wp-con...peedbumps1.jpg

..and it was a PITA without lowering springs on my first FRS and it is now even worse with them. I can't go more than 5 MPH over these without it feeling like I'm abusing the car..

my wheels fell off last i attempted to go over a speedbump, would not recommend 0/10

I have zero issues with my 86 at factory ride height. It's low, so you should keep that in mind and not speed over stuff.

Another thing I've noticed and to keep in mind, is to watch your surroundings when exiting the vehicle. Particularly when you park parallel to a curbs.
The second night I had the 86 I went down to the bank and nearly ran the door into the curb. I had a moment as I pulled the handle and saw the curb.. to check first, and sure enough It would have made contact.

chaoskaze 04-10-2018 08:56 PM

I can't help cause my car was never stock height. :thanks:

Mine either but stock height is 4.9 inches. Most sedans run between 5 and 6 inches (some are stupidly high though). The twins have the exact same stock clearance as a WRX and you don't see them having issues with speed bumps.

Impureclient 04-10-2018 09:43 PM

I was going to write a story in the "FR-S / BRZ vs...." subforum on how I went over a speed bump one time but everybody ruined it in here...

I had a fun time going over speed bumps recently. Stock height but I have the APR front lip so it's a bit low. Left turn with 2 traffic lanes going my direction into a driveway with speed bumps, had 1 car behind me and another in the lane next to me which changed into my lane before we got to the speed bumps. I proceeded to slow down to 4 mph to crawl over the speed bumps, other 2 cars stayed behind me over 2 bumps instead of just passing me in the other lane. Had a good laugh at that.

Hello humfrz,

Thanks a lot for you reply and for tagging me on the thread below, it's very useful. :)

Are all your speed bumps that bad? I'm lowered ~1.5" currently and I can get by just fine past speed bumps, potholes, etc. I've driven around in the crap streets of San Francisco without much trouble as well.

Borchert97 04-11-2018 01:43 AM

At stock height, I don't struggle or even flinch when coming up on a speed bump, that being said, if you're lowered, you MUST take care when going over them. If you're stock height, just drive it like you would a sedan.

guybo 04-11-2018 06:19 AM

I'm at stock ride height but I have a front lip. Occasionally I find a speed bump where my lip scrapes. Coming out of parking lots on to the street, my lip often scrapes on the dip.

But it's not that big of a deal.

Hello FirstWinter,

Well in the Philippines, some of the speed bumps are badly-designed, especially on some subdivisions and on various streets. I remember driving alone with a Vios and scraping a bit, even as I approached it at an angle (I'm not taking that shortcut again :) ) . Nonetheless, I'm not planning to lower my car in the near future, so I think the stock would go along just fine. hehe. :)

Regards from the Philippines. :)

I saw an episode of Myth Busters where the faster they drove on washboard the smoother the ride... I'm sure the same applies to speed bumps. Right? Just drive over them flat out!

GMIRA,
Nice to see the Filipinos on here, being one myself.
Marikina has some nasty speed bumps in terms of height.
Yes, you will have to be very careful.
TRD JDM does offer a rally suspension if you desire.

Good luck to you...

Exactly this - most (standard) speed bumps are less jarring at a reasonable clip. That railroad crossing in the vid above is hardly a standard set up. :D

But yeah as everyone else has mentioned, factory ride height is fine. The lip barely scrapes most normal curbs, so any speed bump shorter than a curb is going to be a non event.

JohnnyWarlord 04-18-2018 12:40 AM

I'll slow down and take every speed bump at as wide an angle as traffic allows.
Also if there's a gap between the lanes with the speed bumps I roll the driver side tires through that. It really helps with the car not bouncing.
Train Tra cks I just take on a wild angle.

Hello wulfstan,

Noted on this. Hehe, I'll take a look on these suspensions. Thanks for the recommendation bro. :)
