What's an 86?
I just called the dealership from which I bought my 86 last year to ask a simple question. The service guy answers the phone and I tell him, "I have a question about scheduled maintenance on my 86."
"What kind of car is it?" "It's an 86." Silence. "An Eight-Six." "What's an Eight-Six? You mean a 1986?" "I bought it from you last year." "We don't sell a car called an 86." "You know - the sports car. A BRZ? FR-S?" "Oh, the Scion." "Yeah, but it's a Toyota." The dealerships really know nothing about these cars. He also told me the wrong schedule service interval, which I had to ask him to look up to be certain. |
Stealerships gonna steal.

Dealership: "We can't do an alignment on your car because it is lowered."
Me: "Can you get a stock FR-S on the alignment machine." Dealership: "No, they are too low." Me: "Wait, What? Then don't tell me it's my springs!" I mean WTF! |
You should have told him you had an AE86 just for the laughs.
|
That is just ...wow... :bonk:

My dealership installed my TRD stuff a couple weeks after I bought the car 3 years ago. The service manager was excited because it was the first time they were doing more than just oil and filters on one. Their head Toyota tech did the work himself. It was a good experience. There are some good dealers out there.

Weird to hold a dealer accountable for not knowing the nickname of one of the many cars they sell. It is a little odd I guess.

Not too long back I rolled into my Subaru dealership after replacing two of my tires because of a nail in one of the sidewalls. The tread on the older pair was still fine.
The service rep told me I needed at least two new tires, preferably all four. She said you have to replace all of them at the same time, and that there was too big a difference in the diameter of my front and rear tires. I knew exactly where she was headed with that, but I decided to feed her some string anyway and asked why the tire diameter mattered. As if explaining it for the thousandth time (which it probably was), "If the tires are not the same size, it messes with the sensors on the all wheel drive." "That's a rear wheel drive car," I said. She stared at me for a moment in complete confusion, until it clicked, and she and I both started laughing. She put her hand on my arm and said, "You're right! I'm so used to everything here being all wheel drive I forgot that car doesn't have it! Never mind!" |

"15K miles already? We'll also need to flush your automatic transmission fluid"

It's still common in the restaurant/bar/casino industry and just cuz I'll tag @86_IT |

But if you ask them for an ATF flush, “No, its a lifetime fluid we don’t do that.” |
I purchased my 17 86 on saturday and I can count more times than I have fingers how many people have asked "what is a 86"
It's actually a fun game, those that know what it is immediately engage in car talk. With regards to dealers.... I had a sales rep at dodge trying to convince me the viper was a V12 with a viper in their showroom... with the hood open. :O So far I have had a very good experience thus far buying my car. I should be getting the call any minute to head to the dealer to pick her up. |

Yeah, not to mention... The development code of this vehicle is 086A[5] and its main production names are 86 or GT86 the engine bore and stroke is 86mm x 86mm the diameter of the exhaust tip is also 86mm the side badge mentioned above symbolizes the horizontal layout of the boxer engine and its crank motif is the number 86 stylized to resemble a drifting car from above. I picked up on this theme over the last 5+ years.... Though the last part about the badge looking like a drifting car; Rubbish - it looks nothing like a drifting car. |

It is Toyota's ONLY 2-door car though. Seems weird that they would not know the two digit name of the best looking car on their lot.... |

For toyota, the 86 is their only new 2 door. Correct me if I am wrong.... The 2 door yaris is listed as a "3 door" on toyotas web site. |
hey, the dealership told me the ATF was lifelong and required no change -- even though the service book I had IN MY HAND told me 60,000 that I showed him.
Toyota service advisors are interesting people. |
Ha! The original post is great. I had a very similar experience that I wrote about on a different thread http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=119474. I'll repost an excerpt here because it just cracks me up:
I did get fog lights installed by the dealer as an extra option when buying the car. I have a mixed experience. It took a week to order them and the salesman said to call the service department to schedule an appointment. I got a "Who's on First" comedy routine: "I need foglights installed on my 86." "An 86 what?" "A Toyota 86." "But an 86 what?" "That's the model." "No, what kind of car is it?" "A Toyota" "A Toyota what?" "86." "On a used car?" "No, it's brand new. I just bought it and have the installation of fog lights included." "On an 86." "Yes." "An 86 what?" I swear it went on like that for a while till I explained that it was not the year but indeed a model of car that Toyota actually sells. He never heard of them. I was doubtful of their ability to service my car properly and was proven right. Myriad |

Compared to all other 2017 toyotas; what would you pick as the best looking? |
