What's an 86?

I just called the dealership from which I bought my 86 last year to ask a simple question. The service guy answers the phone and I tell him, "I have a question about scheduled maintenance on my 86."

"What kind of car is it?"

"It's an 86."

Silence.

"An Eight-Six."

"What's an Eight-Six? You mean a 1986?"

"I bought it from you last year."

"We don't sell a car called an 86."

"You know - the sports car. A BRZ? FR-S?"

"Oh, the Scion."

"Yeah, but it's a Toyota."

The dealerships really know nothing about these cars. He also told me the wrong schedule service interval, which I had to ask him to look up to be certain.

Stealerships gonna steal.

Leonardo 03-22-2018 04:49 PM

Dealership: "We can't do an alignment on your car because it is lowered."

Me: "Can you get a stock FR-S on the alignment machine."

Dealership: "No, they are too low."

Me: "Wait, What? Then don't tell me it's my springs!"

I mean WTF!

Beachin86 03-22-2018 04:51 PM

You should have told him you had an AE86 just for the laughs.

Ghost of Akina 03-22-2018 04:51 PM

That is just ...wow... :bonk:

My dealership installed my TRD stuff a couple weeks after I bought the car 3 years ago. The service manager was excited because it was the first time they were doing more than just oil and filters on one. Their head Toyota tech did the work himself. It was a good experience. There are some good dealers out there.

fatoni 03-22-2018 05:10 PM

Weird to hold a dealer accountable for not knowing the nickname of one of the many cars they sell. It is a little odd I guess.

extrashaky 03-22-2018 05:11 PM

Not too long back I rolled into my Subaru dealership after replacing two of my tires because of a nail in one of the sidewalls. The tread on the older pair was still fine.

The service rep told me I needed at least two new tires, preferably all four. She said you have to replace all of them at the same time, and that there was too big a difference in the diameter of my front and rear tires.

I knew exactly where she was headed with that, but I decided to feed her some string anyway and asked why the tire diameter mattered.

As if explaining it for the thousandth time (which it probably was), "If the tires are not the same size, it messes with the sensors on the all wheel drive."

"That's a rear wheel drive car," I said.

She stared at me for a moment in complete confusion, until it clicked, and she and I both started laughing. She put her hand on my arm and said, "You're right! I'm so used to everything here being all wheel drive I forgot that car doesn't have it! Never mind!"

It's not a nickname. It's the actual model name of the Toyota version after the demise of Scion.

I was told the techs had a blast doing my car. They started out just doing the exhaust but then kept saying "well we offer tint" then "well the exhaust isn't good with out the intake "well now we have the TRD stuff it should have the spoiler" and so on. This is the story I heard from two different guys so I believe it.
Not all employees at dealerships are useless.

As in Toyota USA 86'd the FR-S name.

Very few people outside of the military seem to know that. We used it all the time back in the day. I stopped using it when I started just getting blank stares from the younger guys when I would say to just 86 it.

But if you ask them for an ATF flush, “No, its a lifetime fluid we don’t do that.”

RToyo86 03-22-2018 05:37 PM

I purchased my 17 86 on saturday and I can count more times than I have fingers how many people have asked "what is a 86"

It's actually a fun game, those that know what it is immediately engage in car talk.

With regards to dealers.... I had a sales rep at dodge trying to convince me the viper was a V12 with a viper in their showroom... with the hood open. :O
So far I have had a very good experience thus far buying my car. I should be getting the call any minute to head to the dealer to pick her up.

My skion came with 86 emblems on the side. It is and has always been the Toyota version.

Yeah, the first time I had my oil changed they were excited because they never saw any 86s/FR-Ses in the shop. Kinda makes me wonder... I have thought about doing TRD springs, but would I want them installing them?

Look on the bright side. If you had called him up and said "I have a question about my 86" and his response had been "Oh them what is it now?" then his extensive knowledge of the car would be much more concerning.

Yeah, not to mention...

The development code of this vehicle is 086A[5] and its main production names are 86 or GT86
the engine bore and stroke is 86mm x 86mm
the diameter of the exhaust tip is also 86mm
the side badge mentioned above symbolizes the horizontal layout of the boxer engine and its crank motif is the number 86 stylized to resemble a drifting car from above.

I picked up on this theme over the last 5+ years.... Though the last part about the badge looking like a drifting car; Rubbish - it looks nothing like a drifting car.

And perhaps most importantly, it's always been known as the (GT)86 outside the U.S.

Well I'll be damned. I still don't see the uproar for some guy at a dealer not knowing the name of our car. Sure it's silly but I don't see it as much more than that.

It is Toyota's ONLY 2-door car though.

Seems weird that they would not know the two digit name of the best looking car on their lot....

Best looking and best selling are different. If looking good could pay their rent then I'm sure they would know. I doubt there is a lot of 86 volume compared to any other model so I can see how it could have slipped a mind or two.

And the account number for my loan (which came from a completely unrelated credit union) ended in 0086.

You realize that not everybody thinks it is the best looking car right? There are people that think the Dodge Caravan is the best looking vehicle and others that think if it ain't a hemi truck it is trash. Not everybody shares our opinion on the car. Like I said before if there is one person I would like to not know what it is it is the service guy. If he has seen so few he doesn't know what the name is then he hasn't had to repair many.

Will give them time to hire a homeless guy that has never seen a car before as a Master Tech (or that is what people seem to think they do).

Lol! Yeah. But, on toyotas lot, how are you picking a dodge caravan?

For toyota, the 86 is their only new 2 door. Correct me if I am wrong.... The 2 door yaris is listed as a "3 door" on toyotas web site.

VoltsFRS2013 03-22-2018 10:45 PM

hey, the dealership told me the ATF was lifelong and required no change -- even though the service book I had IN MY HAND told me 60,000 that I showed him.

Toyota service advisors are interesting people.

Myriad 03-22-2018 11:22 PM

Ha! The original post is great. I had a very similar experience that I wrote about on a different thread http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=119474. I'll repost an excerpt here because it just cracks me up:

I did get fog lights installed by the dealer as an extra option when buying the car. I have a mixed experience. It took a week to order them and the salesman said to call the service department to schedule an appointment. I got a "Who's on First" comedy routine:

"I need foglights installed on my 86."
"An 86 what?"
"A Toyota 86."
"But an 86 what?"
"That's the model."
"No, what kind of car is it?"
"A Toyota"
"A Toyota what?"
"86."
"On a used car?"
"No, it's brand new. I just bought it and have the installation of fog lights included."
"On an 86."
"Yes."
"An 86 what?"

I swear it went on like that for a while till I explained that it was not the year but indeed a model of car that Toyota actually sells. He never heard of them. I was doubtful of their ability to service my car properly and was proven right.

Why are you so fixated on the amount of doors a car has?

The Toyota dealership near me has a corvette and some sort of BMW on display at the front of the lot. They had a few twins parked together too for a bit but they must have sold one of them, just 2 there the last time I drove past.

Because Toyota has made a bunch of 2 door cars over the years; some cool and some not. And the fact that the 86, (back on topic for a second) is the only two door they make/offer right now. It seems like it would be memorable to any toyota employee.

Compared to all other 2017 toyotas; what would you pick as the best looking?

As in Toyota 86'd the FR-S name in North America and went with the model name 86.

Except it's not an Eighty Six. It's an Eight Six.
