Which style phone mount is best ?

Vent mount or windshield suction mount?
Magnetic or spring clips?

Threads are old. Options change.

Anyone got something they like?

I use one that mounts inside the CD player entrance, it's okay but blocks the radio a little bit. But my goal was to keep the windshield clear as possiblehttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f326e3a365.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...67573882a0.jpg

I've decided I want to avoid the spring clamp kind.
I want a magnet one.

FryinBerries 03-17-2018 07:41 PM

I have this one mounted to the right of my head unit. I love it. Can see it easily & can plug it in with a 6” charging cable. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e80c2a5e48.jpg

This is the best one I've found:

How about "mounting" it inside the glove box ??

Not new or anything, but I have a generic suction mount on the little side window next to the mirror. I'm away from my car, so I can't take any pictures right now.

Pros:
-Easy to glance at if using for navigation
-Not in the way of anything important

Cons:
-Needs a long charger cable and clever routing due to opening the door.
-Out of reach of passenger if you need them to do something (my fiance is usually the navigator)

I have a Galaxy Note mounted there to run Torque as an engine monitor. Here's what I did with the cable:

https://i.imgur.com/fftmSfT.jpg

There's a little square gap at the top of that panel just big enough to let a cable pass through. It's as if it were designed to allow this.

https://i.imgur.com/RyNQqmH.jpg

I have the cable run to a USB power port mounted to the steering support member under the dash (not shown). I have the USB port powered off the heated seat circuit in the fuse panel under the dash right there using an add-a-circuit.

https://i.imgur.com/OBycKuo.jpg

It makes it a lot cleaner than having to plug it in somewhere. Eventually I'm going to run that cable through the boot in the door hinge and out the little gap next to the small window, so that it doesn't need any slack to open and close the door.

So much better than my solution. Mine was just to string it along using cable clips in the interior panel gaps.

That's the exact one I have. It's good, but the claps are slow moving in the winter when it's cold.

I've been using this mount for a few months and love it, only thing is you will need a case for the phone that covers the back so you can place the magnet inside (unless you don't mind a magnet sticker on your phone).

Holds well, and doesn't block the entire vent.

Welp, if you knew where you were going and were driving within the speed limit, you shouldn't need to see either one while driving.

In these parts, they just passed a "distracted driving law" ...... which means that if you have a cell phone, a pack of cigarettes, a drink or anything to eat within reach, while sitting in a car, with the engine running, you can be fined ..... :eyebulge:

However, it's an "open carry" state, so you can have a loaded handgun on your lap while driving .....:D

Lakitu 03-19-2018 12:47 PM

- suction cup to window, won't stick in hot weather when plastic gets too hot
- magnet to vent, didn't work because too small and not enough clearance above radio
- bracket to rear view mirror, works but vibrates the rear view mirror and slight adjustments also requires re-adjusting the rear view.

Nothing seems to really work perfectly in my car without some kind of drawback.

finch1750 03-19-2018 01:50 PM

Beatsonic dash mount is still my favorite. Not sure if you can get them still though.

If not a RAM mount on the small triangle window would be my next choice. Have that in my MR2 Spyder and is the only thing after 4 other attempts that doesnt vibrate like hell

No, not radar detector. Weather radar:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/8O...stc=w1600-h769

And I'm driving in excess of 30K miles per year again in Florida, Texas and Oklahoma. There's no hope of knowing where I'm going without help. I spent seven years finding my way around unfamiliar streets with physical map books in a variety of cities, and I'll never willingly go back to that.

Oh, OK ..... but, no need for a weather radar map in my area ..... cause if it ain't raining where I am ...... it will be raining up the road a ways ......:sigh:

As far as a GPS, yes, I agree they are helpful. However, I use the GPS in my aftermarket head unit. I just enter where I want to go and the girl tells me how to get there ...... Also, since my phone hooks up to the head unit wirelessly, I just leave it in the glove box.

So, when I get pulled over for "distracted driving", I have no excuse ...... the LEO tells me to drive carefully...... and slowly ...... and for heavens sake turn off my turn signal .......

I ordered a little circular magnet vent kind for $5.

Weather radar comes in handy in the areas where I drive. I have used it to stay put while a hail core passed in front of me. I have pulled over under an overpass in extremely heavy rain and checked the radar to see if it was worth staying put for a while to let it clear. When you drive as much as I do, it's helpful. I actually have two radar apps.

I have the stock 2014 BRZ head unit. The navigation has always left something to be desired. I used to enter my destination in both the head unit and the phone in case I needed a detour, but the head unit has become so laggy that now I just don't bother.

I also stream my music library through the head unit, and the MP3 player control interface on the head unit also sucks. So I need the phone within reach to avoid punching the head unit.

Any problems with the clamp coming out of the vent? I bought the scosch one and the mount comes off with the phone every time.

None yet after 3 months BUT I clamp it onto the circular vent near the door so that it doesn't block my radio.

Yep, pretty much so.

"In addition to targeting electronic devices, the new law also makes illegal a variety of other “Dangerously Distracted” driving practices. The Dangerously Distracted section of the new law includes banning ANY activity not related to driving that interferes with the safe operation of your vehicle as a secondary offense. Examples might include: eating, spilling your coffee, your dog on your lap, putting on makeup or shaving. While you can’t be pulled over for these non-driving related distractions, if the distraction contributes to you to committing a traffic violation, such as crossing the centerline or following too close, then you can receive an additional $99 fine for being dangerously distracted."

"spilling your coffee"

Apparently you can drink your coffee as long as it goes straight from your cup to your mouth.

mazeroni 03-22-2018 02:58 PM

Do you have the old-style passenger-side plastic trim piece? The one that is faux carbon fiber or silver?

I just have one of these suctioned to it. Works great except when its cold in the morning and warm in the afternoon. Then the suction comes off. Not a huge deal and it keeps the phone out of the sun.

AND ...... they can confiscate a woman's blouse, right off her back, to use as evidence ....... :eyebulge:

Not sure that is a risk I want to take. Have you seen how bad some lids fit paper/strofoam cups?

It is Washington and the only coffee legally sold is Starbucks and their lids fit pretty good so it shouldn't be an issue.

I found this to be the best solution for the 17+ with the fabric trim piece.

I wrapped the bracket and it turned out nicely. I paired it with magic mount and stuck the metal shim inside my OtterBox.

I highly recommend this to anybody, and support our forum member syience. Very prompt and shipping was fast.

Damm ! Wrap look great ! Another option I can do to mine. Sy is quick and the mount is top shelf.

I really like what Sy sent because it allows you to finish it how ever you want.

I definitely recommend the wrap, any color since it really cleans up the bracket with little effort.
I gave it a rough sand with 120 grit to bring down the uneven surfaces on mounting face of the bracket.
