Kenwood DDX918 Released!
http://www.kenwood.com/au/car/visual...duct_large.png
New version of the DDX WS series has been released. Lots of updates for 2018, including an updated interface with faster processor, a higher quality DSP (my past life as a Car Audio diehard/current life as an AV Systems Design/Engineering Consultant have me drooling here), support for 360 degree cameras, and probably most importantly, a 720p screen with higher brightness and better viewing angles. More info here: http://www.kenwood.com/au/car/visual...tion/ddx918ws/ This may have pushed me over the edge to replace the outdated Fujitsu Ten unit in my Canadian 2017! |
That looks great, but I wish they sold a LHD/US version.

That makes two of us. They did make a LHD version 2 generations ago with the DDX916WSL, but it was only sold in the Latin American market and is IMPOSSIBLE to find (I’ve tried). |

@willimusk that's a good point about being able to swap the sides.

Kenwood DDX918 Released!
Additionally, I’ve just noticed the DMX718WBT has been released which doesn’t include CarPlay/Android Auto, however it does have native control of Wase and Spotify (what I use primarily in my vehicle from my phone). It will be at a lower price point.
This is tempting. |
hmmmmmm.. my GF wants my pioneer unit in her car b/c she likes that the resistive screen on it works with her nails.. maybe its time to upgrade...
|
I have the DDX917WS and can confirm it is awesome, and if you have steering wheel controls the touch buttons on the "wrong side" are no issue. I use steering wheel and voice commands to control everything with android auto, rarely touch the screen.
This will be way more enjoyable than your stock unit... it brings the stock speakers to life and I think it sounds way better. |

What's the best way to get one of these imported?
|
I'm guessing they will probably be available on eBay shortly. DDX917WS is.
I'd like to go this route too. Can a functioning novice install it without too much trouble? Does it include all (the useful) features of the original infotainment system? I have a 2017 limited. From the description it looks like it has everything plus some more. How about the harness. Will it require an additional purchase? Does it fit behind the original bevel so it looks like it was made to fit or will I need spacers? Is the main feature over the DDX917WS a faster interface? Looks like it has more camera inputs too. Have I used up my allotment of questions, or can I ask more? Bill |
No Wireless Android Auto? Kind of a bummer. Alpine and BMW already have wireless CarPlay tech, what's the hold up on wireless Android Auto?

For CarPlay, unfortunately, mirroring is only one way, with no on-screen app control in the 917ws. Don't know about the 18. |

CarbonCarSystem I applied this to mine and it works. |

I was just getting ready to do the head unit in my BRZ. Would it be worth t to wait for this to pop up somewhere. Will it be priced similar to the 917?

Does the DDX918 or 917 offer actual wireless Android Auto or is it wireless screen mirroring? Or are they close enough to the same thing that I shouldn't care?

They are pretty different. AA will only allow you to use apps that are specifically released for it (google maps, waze, google music, spotify to name a few). Mirroring will give you a 100% reproduction of your phone screen on your head unit, which means access to ALL your apps. For android auto at least, you can use the head unit to control your phone via touchscreen. Miracast will be huge battery drain if you don't plug in your phone though, as you are basically streaming between your phone and head unit wifi. From what I recall in my research on head units this is the main reason why wireless android auto/carplay is not really a thing (yet). Edit: Well it looks like they are starting to release them with wireless AA... http://www.kenwood.com/usa/car/navig...edia/ddx9705s/ |

One for carplay and the other AA or anything else. |
here's a short guide I wrote recently on the center console USB mod

These are available on ebay with free shipping for $679
EDIT: Nevermind, those are the 917s... |
Got my DDX918WS installed in my '17 BRZ recently using the Carbon Car Systems harness and, as many have reported on the DDX917WS thread, my backup camera didn't work.

Having done a little more research and with help from my friend (I know you're reading this — thank you again!) we've inserted a PAC VOLT-39 (available on Amazon) set to 6V in between the head unit and accessories harness — and now everything just works! Since I know how frustrating it can be to deal with this, I've decided to share the details of what we did. You should be proficient with a soldering iron, and have everything needed for soldering readily available. Also, no guarantees that it will work for other MYs — use your own judgement/intuition and be prepared to improvise. 1) Find the camera/accessory power and ground on the 28-pin connector on the CCS harness and the red and black wires connected to those pins. You might find this post with pin out table for MY16 useful. Here's how it looked on my harness: https://i.imgur.com/F2RyAiJ.png 2) Undo the cloth insulation around the cables leading to the connector to have at least 2 inches of cables exposed. 3) Cut the power and the ground wires in the middle of the exposed area and solder the VOLT-39 cables like this: - VOLT-39 black cable to harness ground (Y-shaped connection) - VOLT-39 red (~12V power in) and blue (trigger) cables to the head unit side half of the harness red cable (Y-shaped connection) - VOLT-39 red-and-white (6V power out) cable to the connector side half of the harness red cable Like this: https://i.imgur.com/6zL0hSX.png Minor correction: now that I know the result, I'd solder the VOLT-39's black cable the other way around so that it has a bit less mechanical stress when the VOLT-39 itself is taped to the harness. Not a big deal though. 4) Enjoy! |

The CCS harness already came with the PAC Volt-39 unit already attached and taped in the loom. Everything works perfectly with the exception of the rear view camera. It works in ACC on mode but not when the engine is running. Since everything is Tesa taped together, I can't see if the Volt-39 wires are attached as they should be (like in your photo above.) Any ideas? |

Consider not resurrecting multiple threads at once with a question that can be answered in just one of them :) |
Exciting news!
I stumbled upon these instructions on how to run RaceChrono via Android Auto, and it seems to work: https://i.imgur.com/JAz6IGb.jpg The short version is:
I'll try that at my next track day and report how well it works. So far I did a few "laps" around my block and it worked fine. |
I tried it at the track yesterday and boy I wish I found that hack earlier!
Here's a video from my helmet, you can see the head unit in action: https://youtu.be/XtPEM2Tzi8c The initial setup is a little finicky, and "force fullscreen" doesn't work reliably (works ok if I turn it off), so I have to leave small gaps on the side of the screen. But other than that the apps worked really well. |
@timurrrr have you tried Screen2Auto? That app includes AAStream and AAMirror features and is recently updated... would possibly work better :)

I've just tried it and it seems to work better, at least the "plug and go" scenario. https://i.imgur.com/bSEiuaP.jpg?1 The app itself needed some tinkering to get it working the way I want though. But now it utilizes the whole screen, which is nice. It also periodically shows up a "Failed to connect to <my car name>" message, but I haven't noticed any real issues around it. Will take it for a spin next time I'm at the track/AutoX! |

I remember I disabled that button mapping before, it's strange that it got reset somehow... Anyhow, on this video you can see me leaving the Phone app and opening RaceChrono via Android Auto while setting a PB on a racetrack :bellyroll: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ct4L6gD2d5A The data comes from a DIY CAN reader but OBD-II would be a good starting point if you're not into DIY stuff. |
