Check engine light
Hi y’all
I bought an 86 in November of last year and the check engine light came on about a month ago. Took it to the dealership and they first told me that it’s a fuel issue I have to use premium which I was using since I bought it. The light came back on and then they replaced the injectors. Well the light came back on again and Toyota is stumped. They were going to replace the ECU but then they said that would not fix the problem. They are thinking maybe it’s the Borla exhaust which I doubt that’s what it is cuz I had that exhaust on my 2015 FRS that I had before this 86. The car runs great it’s just that damn CEL. So what y’all think? Any idea on what could be the issue? Maybe someone else here has had this problem. Please help me Thanks Albert Houston, TX |
Well posting the codes that it is throwing is a start to try and help us help you....

Yep, knowing the code(s) would help. Bubba says to just place a piece of black electrical tape over the CEL symbol. humfrz |
Yeah y’all right my bad. Ok I work at a Toyota dealership here in Houston and I just pulled up my DTC history and here are the codes. P219A, P1604, P119F.
|
P219A - Bank 1 Air/Fuel Ratio Imbalance
Leaking or contaminated fuel injectors Low fuel pressure or running out of fuel Leaking evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve Exhaust or intake air system leaks Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system Positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system is leaking or the valve is stuck open Ignition system Incorrectly seated engine oil dipstick, tube or oil fill cap P1604 Startability Malfunction Low Battery charge Starting system Low quality fuel Clogged Fuel filter Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM Nothing on P119F Best guess is that it indeed fuel related. |
A quick search brings up numerous threads on this site with P219A and P119F. Some of them seem to be dead ends, but maybe something in there will put you on the right track:

Ok. They already replaced the injectors and they had already placed the order for the ECU until Toyota said that they already tried to do that with another car with the same problem and they determined that replacing the ECU won’t fix it.

Was the exhaust the only thing changed?
|
The exhaust came with the car when I bought it. Only thing that’s been replaced relating to the CEL were the injectors.

Unless I'm misreading, you bought it used, correct? Most of the posts about those codes are from people who have modified the car with intake parts or a tune. I'd almost be willing to bet money the prior owner modded that car and took it back to stock before it got to you. Are you sure you don't have a tune on it now? Did the dealer try flashing it back to the stock tune? |
I bought it brand new. It only had 9 miles when I took delivery of it. So no it hasn’t been modded. The Borla exhaust came from Toyota.

Exactly. No intake or tune. Just the exhaust.

P119E,P119F,P219A BANK 1 AIR-FUEL RATIO IMBALANCE FOR PORT INJECTION Kinda looks like 1 or more bank 1 injectors is taking a dump. That might cause the startability problem too. The tech should be able to look at the data from when the code was thrown and determine of it's the DI or PI injectors. @Ultramaroon you can look at that info can't you? You can tell stuff like fuel pressure, RPM etc at the time when a code was thrown? |
That’s right. Just exhaust.

FA20 ENGINE CONTROL: SFI SYSTEM: P119E,P119F,P219A; Bank 1 Air-Fuel Ratio Imbalance for Port Injection; 2016 MY FR-S [05/2015 - ] P119F refers to DI. There's only one upstream O2 sensor (air/fuel sensor, whatever) so it's all "bank 1." FA20 ENGINE CONTROL: SFI SYSTEM: P1604; Startability Malfunction; 2016 MY FR-S [05/2015 - ] It would be good to see LTFT. |
I got both codes P119F P219A at 600 miles on my 2017 toyota 86. had it checked out at the local dealership, they weren't sure what was wrong so they just cleared the codes and gave me the car back.
At 1280 miles it came back again! took it to the same dealership. They asked me what gas I put in it. I said premium from whatever gas station I happen to pass by. They went on and cleaned all the gas lines, injects etc. drove it for 10 miles and gave me back the car with instructions to fill up at Chevron from now on?!? At 2100 miles it came back on my drive home. I had a busy day the next day so I didn't get a chance to drop it off at the dealership but I scheduled an appointment for the day after. That morning of day 3 I started the car and the check engine light didn't come on. Drove the car to work with no issues so I decided to cancel the appointment. Currently I'm almost at 2300 miles and scared this issue will come back. |
So they haven't tried the DI ECU/Driver which seems an obvious place to check/swap. Or the HPFP.
|
On Wednesday the dealership I work at are going to check the pistons with a boroscope and also check the valve clearances. Pretty much do what the repair manual says to do when those codes come up. They already changed the injectors so we shall see what happens
