Tossing between GT vs GTS
Anyone GT owners (or soon to be) regret not paying 6k more for a GTS?
For those who ordered/owned a GTS do you think that 6k premium + longer waiting period is well worth? |
I went GT.
$6k difference is going into wheels, a Bride seat later on and Pioneer GPS system as well as various aero parts. Same same but different. |
If I didn't already have a GTS order in the system for December arrival I would definitely go for the GT. 18-20 months is far too long just for bigger wheels and other things that can be added or ignored anyway. Its not about what you get for an extra $6k. Its a case of do you really want to wait that long for those things?
|
It is worth the extra $6k but definitely worth considering the wait time. The engine and driveline are the same so I think if I was in your position I would be looking at the GT. It certainly gives you more to spend on upgrades too.
Do you want to use it sometimes for a track car or autocross? Then heated seats and leather is not so important. |
I went GT but now hoping to get a BRZ - almost perfect spec for me. I didn't want leather seats and navigation - but the 3K extra for BRZ is justifyable for 17' wheels, bigger brakes and digital techo and nice to have's like alloy pedals and nicer headlights.
Also its closer to ~$2300 difference, considering free servicing. Otherwise, I'd be going for the GT - I'd rather have the car sooner. |
Does Australia even have climate where heated seats would be needed? Would've thought the car heater would do fine.

Here in Melb you can get some pretty cold nights..
but probably not really needed.. Im sure ill get enjoyment out of putting them on for passengers in summer when they are not looking ;) |

It depends on what you want out of the car.
If you are going to spend a squillion bucks (official amount of money spent on after market mods) to change the car to how you want it, then I would go for a GT. If you are happy to keep the car as stock then get that little bit of extra luxury and go for the GTS. Personally having test drive both the AT and MT GTS, I was then given the option of buying a MT GT straight away, no waiting and I had a choice of colours but I couldn't bring myself to not have my extra gadgets. I also knew that if I had gone for the GT that there was no way that the Minister for War and Finance would have let me spend the money saved on getting the extra gadgets I wanted. |

Having said that I would rather pay the 6k and enjoy the nicer things the car while I own it |

If you want a GT immediately, there is one at Lander Toyota. I wanted a GTS but opt'd for GT instead. The only that I regret is the brakes, smaller on GT but if i go down turbo rate i would be changing them on either model.
The other thing is Auto climate compared to manual air con. Pedals, minor interior changes, but saving $6000. I am going to do proper leather interior, gram light wheels, gkw v3. At least with the saving i can build my way with the $6k saving. |
The headlights and better brakes was what sold me on getting the GTS instead of the GT. Leather seats are nice and Sat Nav a luxury though
|
i love my heated seats too and i'm in Brisbane lol
|
Funny thing with leather seats - they get colder so then you need leather HEATED seats. And in summer naked skin on hot leather burns.
Cloth doesn't have the same issue, so imho makes more sense for QLD. |
I know GTS MT & AT definitely have LSD on them but I thought GT doesnt, or at least GT AT does not have LSD.
I would pick GTS over GT for the LSD as well as the other goodies... |
Only GT Auto doesn't have Torsen LSD.

Since I am doing only very very minor modifications on the car (e.g UK 86 spoiler and maybe TRD or aero type kit) - I'm going with the GTS.
Won't be tracking or TC/SC this car, it will hold for resale. But glad we've been given a choice. |
i just had this convo with the dealer today the reason im going to go GTS over GT is that when i sit in the GTS to me it feels nicer not because of the leather seat couldn't be stuffed and not because of the sat nav i never use em, its just feels better to me the "carbon" look over the glovebox is what really won me over, but thinking practiacally i am going to be waiting 18 months and i figure thats how long its going to take me to save up the money for the car anyway so i figure go the GTS and have a car assigned to me so that when next year comes and i have the money i dont have to wait another _ _ months to get the car
|
The 5 - 6K alone is worth the digital speedo. Well not really.
But I wouldn't be able to drive legally without it, since there isn't one on the GT |
My dealer here has a GT and a GTS. I'd go GTS just for much better interior quality alone, it's much nicer IMO, doesn't feel so cheap. It's not just the seats that are different, but door trims, plastics, etc. The two major things I want in this car is HIDs and the digital speedo.
Saying that, BRZ is the spec for me I think. GTS spec minus heated seats and nav, which I don't want. If I can save ~$3k and get free servicing, bonus! |

The key GTS bits which I value are the headlights, LSD and paddle shifters (if u are thinking of the auto), push button start and digital speedo read out.
So if you really appreciate these things, you should go for the GTS. |

thanks for the inputs guys
I actually dropped by Sydney Toyota this afternoon spending about 15mins to look at the GTS auto they have... as well as a quick chat with the sales rep (name Harry... very helpful guy). I want a manual so I didn't ask for a test drive... On the way back to work I made up my mind to keep the 6k. Based on ... the followings are only my opinions OK? 1. Mechanically they are the same 2. A set of aftermarket ventilated brake disc is not expensive 3. There are better looking & lighter aftermarket wheels 4. Same steering wheel (I was told) 5. GTS gets a better interior but still... just average... (Yeah I know...WYPIWYG) 6. Don't really need the day time running lights...the car will catch people's attention 7. Digital speedo + white dial look really nice  , but the car still can move without one 8. I don't use Sat Nav often. Bluetooth and USB port are MUST HAVE though 9. Shorter waiting period (I was told) 10. GT is 18kg lighter :party0030: I lost count how much money I spent on my ex trackday car to make it 20kg lighter  |
The GT is lighter and therefore faster, end of discussion...
seriously, it wasn't that the extras weren't worth it but it just ceased it be the bargain it is. 40k and you have to consider other cars.. at 34, not really.. |

This is what I was quoted in VIC - GT $34,000 & GTS 38,800 (Includes ORC plus mats and tank of fuel)
- Difference of $4,800 in price |
I've got a GT and its the best decision ive ever made.
I prefer the look of the GT wheels and the only thing I hated was the 1982 head unit, but upgraded to full eclipse Sat nav which lifts the interior massively. But bottom line even more than the 6k saving was the fact I'm now driving an 86 which is basically mechanically the same and looks the same to the untrained eye, rather than waiting until next year. Easy decision I reckon. |
Im sure someone is going to make a real carbon fibre dash to replace on the gt anyways.
Im set on a gt model the only thing i really want on the gts is the digitial cluster but im sure i will get one second hand later on once spares are more common lol. |

17" wheels were dynamically better. Dual zone climate control and heated leather seats got the tick of approval from the boss (wife). Smart entry and start makes me happy, as does the interior (T-mesh trim ... or as others are incorrectly saying, carbon fibre). The audio/GPS unit didn't inspire me much ... The GTS value to me made it worthwhile, but I know everyone is different and I understand individuals justifications for GT or GTS. |
i am planning on putting in the GTS handbrake and possibly the knee pads, dash panel could be easily upgraded too, cost... hmmm. hopefully such bits are cheap enough, silver bits (gear surround, ac vents) could be easily painted silver, even by auto trimmers if you want an OEM look, i think a darker silver would look better
|
Personally, the GT is perfect for me. Cost aside. I don't like the stock 17's. The stock 16's look better IMO and they will be changed anyway. I have no care for leather, dual zone climate control, nav or push button start. none of these things make the car faster or handle better. The only things I like more are the headlights, but HID's aren't a deal breaker. Bee driving with halogens for 11 years :P The biggest thing was the brakes, but they can be upgraded anyway.
That's my personal opinion. The "cheap" GT interior is still the nicest car I've owned, because I have never owned anything new. And all I really wanted was manual air con. SO I am very happy with the decision for a GT :) It arrives soon enough. |
For those going AT instead of MT, the GT lacks LSD and hence is a bit of a deal breaker.
GTS has LSD across all models. |
