North Texas Track Thread
The autox thread does pretty well, but I think we might be missing out on the guys who don't autocross (we've been posting track stuff in there too).
I had a pretty good time with APEX today at MSR-C on the 1.7ccw, it was cold though. The temperature was 26F at the start of my first session, but we warmed up to the low 40's by the end of the day. The first couple of sessions involved low grip and skids. My best lap was a 1:27.6 which is a full second behind my personal best, but I had a blast anyway. APEX keeps the run groups small, I got 6 sessions, and we kept exactly on schedule. https://youtu.be/RAt6x-aKUBU?t=11m56s 2014 BRZ with Bridgestons RE71r (245/45-17), Ohlins R&T coilovers, JDL Unequal length catless headers, AP Sprint kit with Carbone Lorraine - RC6. 2650lbs and 178whp |
Do you daily or street drive you BRZ or is it dedicated to the track?
Asking because I'm planning on dual use of mine and interested in how much special prep and maintenance I'll be going through. |
With the TWS closure, I was forced to expand my track selection. This year I will run 3-4 weekends at MSR Cresson, 3-4 weekends at COTA, 6-7 weekends at MSR Houston, and 1 weekend at Eagles Canyon.

As for maintenance, plan on swapping brake, transmission, and diff fluid 1-2 times per year and doing oil changes ever 3-4k miles or 2-3 trackdays.
My RE71's last about 5-6 trackdays, just make sure you've got at least -2.5 degrees of camber up front or you'll eat the outside edges in a couple of sessions. I do about 12 trackdays and over 30 autox events each year. I go through 3-4 sets of RE71's, change my brake, diff, and transmission fluid once, and change my oil 4-5 times. Costs breakdown like this: a set of RE71's mounted are about $700 brake, tranny, and diff fluids are about $100 and each oil change is $30 I go through 1-2 sets of brake pads for about $120-$180 each All in I'm spending about $2500 in consumables each year and about the same in registration fees (fees are $50-$200 per track event and $25-$45 for each autocross). |

Most of my tire wear comes from autox, I wouldn't be surprised if you could get 6-8+ trackdays from a set of the RE71's (at least at MSR). |
Hey Sam, is there a Tech Sheet for tomorrow's Club Trials? I haven't see one posted on the website, nor included in the Winter Festival packet. I pinged Brad also, and waiting for his response.

Subject: RE: Texas Region Club Trials - 01/27 Date: January 26, 2018 at 9:40:51 AM CST There should be an E Mail going out to all participants. If not, here is one attached |
I’m a long-time track junkie, and picked my BRZ for its great balance of fun, reliabitiy/ease of maint., and being easy on consumables.’
I mainly instruct for Apex, but my next event will be 2/10 at ECR running backwards. Hope to see some of y’all there! |
Just bought an used AP sprint brake kit and currently looking for a place here in Dallas who are willing to do slotted brake disc resurface. Anyone knows were I can go? I used to go to Pepboys to get my DBA rotors resurfaced in Puerto Rico but here in Dallas they refuse to do it, they say is “impossible”.

I want to also formally introduce myself. I moved from PR about 6 months ago and brought my 2013 FRS. I bought it new back in dec/2012 and last year was when I finally had the guts to some tracking, and got hooked on this sport! Planning to start going to tracks on April/2018 when I finally have 17inch wheels track tire. Hopefully I get a chance to meet all you soon! |

This weekend was the opening to the SCCA Club Trials season with events on both Saturday and Sunday (each counted as its own event for points) both at MSR-C on the 1.7ccw.
Saturday started out damp and cold, which was a treacherous combination that made MSR a skating rink. My tires were on the way out, but I thought they would do ok for the weekend, I was wrong. I swapped to new rubber on Sunday and dropped nearly 4s and set a new personal best. I managed a 1:24.7 in the second session on Sunday and knocked 1.9s from my personal best. https://youtu.be/ZMznz70P2I8?t=3m53s I love the SCCA Club Trials and recommend them to anyone looking for a great track experience. |
I made my first trip out to Eagle's Canyon Raceway and had a blast. I ran my new Falken Azenis 615k+ and Ferodo DS1.11 pads, both of which held up admirably and made for a great day. The Falkens felt good and and wore well, they make good track tires.
I managed a 2:09.3s (starts at 6:52), I don't know how much faster the RE71's would be. [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCzDmzsXing&t=685s"]ECR Trackday March 10, 2018 Fourth Session - YouTube[/ame] |
I managed to both be the fastest in my class and come in second at the 3/31 SCCA Time Trial thanks to losing my transponder at the beginning of my 4th session (out of 5). We had 6 twins, and David <shneegle> will end up beating me with a 2:07.88 (my best scored lap was only a 2:08.76).
I got all the way down to a 2:06.54 according to my AIM Solo2 and all my hot laps in the 5th session were under 2:08. I don't have any videos of my last session because I forgot my charging cable and my left my camera on but not recording after my 4th session, which drained the battery. My RE71r's were 1-2s faster around ECR than my Falken Azenis 615k+'s. I still really like the Falkens and they make great track tires for when you don't have to set new PB's. I went back to ECR on my Falkens and nearly matched my previous best time on my RE71's managing a 2:06.7. There might only be a second or less between the two tires.
Fastest Lap starts at 21:57 [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWw9QkmJdrc"]ECR Trackday Session #2 (fixed gps) - YouTube[/ame] |
I had a blast my first time at MSR-H, huge thanks to Dai for the hook up with all the track time (8 30min sessions in a single day!). I did end up bending a wheel but it holds air and wasn't out of balance enough to cause any real vibrations (just the outer lip was bent, probably repairable), and when I went to leave my windshield cracked when the AC came on (or when I closed the hood the last time, but I've got glass replacement with my insurance).
My fastest lap starts at 4:52 (1:50.9), and at 10:18 I clip the curbing and get a little sideways towards the wall (major clenching happened, and maniacal laughing starts at 10:22). https://youtu.be/KLoGn6nspxo?t=292 |
I didn't realize we had a new track forum to post in.
I did the same MSR-H day that Sam (14stu) did. Great value for what you get and definitely not for beginners. We had no flag stations and it was pretty much open passing. One of my ignition coils was throwing a CEL which started after session 3 and one of my tires is nearly corded now. I was on Re71r's that were very worn from a trip to ECR and many autox events. I'll look forward to the track with better condition tires next time. My fastest lap according to the Solo2 was at 7:00 (1:52.1). The GPS on the camera isn't as accurate but close. Very nice!
I've found that the differences in the Aim and Garmin times are usually due to where I set the start/finish line. If you get them exactly lined up the times are spot on, but I usually just try to get them close and don't sweat the tenth or so differences. Looks like I was able to hold an extra couple of mph around the carousel, probably thanks to your worn tires, and that accounted for most of the difference in our lap times. I'll send you my data and we can see for sure. I should have followed you for a couple of laps to find out for sure, but I didn't really see any huge differences in our lines or laps just a number of small areas that added up. My memory card had an issue in the afternoon, one of the last sessions that plane did a huge banking turn just over the track by the 'bus stop' area right in front of me and I wish I had it on video. |
Finally Tracking.
Hey guys, anyone going to be at MSR - Cresson on 05/21/2018? I did my first track day 04/21/2018. Since then I bought Jason's old 17x8 OZ wheels and mounted some RE whatevers... you know the good ones RE71 I think. BTW I am also on the DFW 86/BRZ/FR-S club on facebook. Adam is my name.

The RE71r's are fast at the track, but they're soft and you can burn through a set pretty quick. I really like the Falken Azenis 615k+ for a lapping tire, they've been working well for me. |

Awesome experience last week in Cresson 1.7 CCW with Track Night by SCCA and Tire Rack. Greg from the Track Night crew was able to take impressive pictures to all cars. My best time using harry's laptimer was 1:31.77 averaging 72.1mph. Had issues with fuel starvation at the end of the second hit, but already installed the Verus fix to try to alleviate the issue. My next event was supposed to be today with Apex but unfortunately I never made it on the waiting list. Thinking to buy the go pro hero 5 for recording my next events and eventually AIM Solo2DL.
What's your current set up for track videos/analysis? |
Just for some piece of mind, after seeing a friend of mine car catch on fire yesterday at the track.

Are you talking about a certain someone's yellow CR? Yeah I have track insurance for the next day.

I was getting fuel starve at anything less than half a tank on the 1.7CCW until I installed the fuel flapper valve, now I only get it if I'm below a quarter of a tank. I'm instructing at the next APEX event on June 23, there is an ECR open trackday the same day, both are filling fast. |

For those of us who race at MSR, and love BBQ on the Brazos, this is unfortunate news: http://dallas.culturemap.com/news/re...resson-closed/. Went by there today as I was driving through Cresson and it was closed. Sign on the door said Rooster’s BBQ coming soon. Good news is the owners of Brazos say they’ll still work out of their trailer at various locations and events until they find a new location in the Cresson/Granbury area. Hope they get back up and running soon!

I still have not tried this BBQ place. I should really make it a task to do that when they either get back up or are at a track day in cresson.

We had a great 86 turnout at last Saturday's SCCA Time Trials on the 1.3 at MSR Cresson with 7 out of 36 cars in the timed sessions being twins!
All 5 of the Street Touring 1 competitors were in twins and with only a 4s gap from first to fifth the competition was pretty tight, especially if you take out my 2s lead on the class to bring the remaining 4 competitors down to a 2s delta. Everyone seems to be getting faster and it won't be long until my temporary cushion is yanked away. I managed a 1:09.0 is the first session and couldn't beat it, when I made my videos though I found out that when I set the start/finish in line with the SCCA trailer (where I thought the timing loop was) my lap times dropped a quarter second which nearly matches my personal best on the 1.3. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0EqekP3A38&t=399s[/ame] Sneegle managed 2nd, but I'm sure he'll pick up time since this was his first trip to the 1.3 (he was pretty damn fast for a first attempt). I made the strategic mistake of giving both David and Taylor rides to help show them the lines, but Taylor had my back by driving off course and ending the last timed session early to keep David from getting any closer to me (there ended up being only about a half a second between David and Taylor, but David managed to take the win despite Taylor's best efforts). You can watch David and I chase Terry Fair in his FRS with 315's! Without David in the car I was consistently a full second faster than Terry, but with the extra ballast we were a little slower. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gog0Sze5sKQ[/ame] All in all it was another fantastic event,If you haven't been out to an SCCA Time Trial, you are missing out. |
I had a blast at the Track Night in America yesterday on the 1.7CCW at MSR Cresson. I met a couple of new 86 drivers (two who worked at Park Place Porsche) but I don't think they're on here.
The advanced group had open passing with pointbys and it was interesting passing in the corners. An S2k dropped oil at the end or rattlesnake/beginning of wagon wheel which made me slide off track at the end of the first session (I managed to avoid the AMG Mercedes and S2k, but it was a tense few seconds). https://youtu.be/AzZoHeYvTxw?t=811 I managed a 1:25.6 in the second session and like three laps of 1:25.7 in the third session while chasing a C6 Z06. https://youtu.be/J5hDa7-eCHM?t=380 I had 2 Corvette drivers and a Camaro driver come over to check out my supercharger only to be disappointed that I was NA and on street tires. |

I was running 255/40-17 Hankook RS4's on 17x9 rims (Ambits, which were cheap but are a little on the heavy side). I'm currently using Ferodo DS1.11 pads in the front and GLoc R10's in the back. |
