Subaru Fun on Lake Poygan

If you haven’t taken your car out onto the ice for some ice racing and shenanigans... let me tell you, you are missing out. Finally got back out there this year, and not a moment too soon! Threw some clips together with some overly dramatic music for fun!

Looks like a blast. Gotta do that someday.

Looks fun! Great aerials from the drone too.

Looks so awesome! Really need to come out and try it. How's sliding in the ice compared to dry and wet tarmac?

Its a completely different concept. I'll take snow and ice any day over wet and dry. So much more fun.

ermax 01-10-2018 01:47 AM

So reckless. What if you hit a curb or a light poll. Oh did you say a lake? Hahaha

But seriously, I’m from Florida. The thought of driving on a frozen lake and trusting it will not break and fall through doesn’t compute. Hahaha

MrSkubi 01-10-2018 02:45 AM

Love it! Thanks for the video

It's a lot more... slidey, lol.

Haha, we aren't COMPLETELY dumb! They measure the ice beforehand. The bore drill actually bottomed out at 15", and you only need like 10" to support a large truck. Oh, and the lake is massive, but it at the DEEPEST point it's only 11 feet deep, so it isn't as spooky as driving on ice over water that's two miles deep, lol.

I wasn't doubting there were safety precautions at this event. Just saying as a Floridian it sounds terrifying. Hahaha

are you (or anyone) running studded tires? Or just snows?
we used to do this with our MX bikes, we'd put hex head screws in the knobby tires. Loads of fun.

I was running on studless winter tires (General Altimax Arctics), but of the 93 entrants, 10 of them were using the bolted style studded tires.

Tire on the left is 260 studs, tire on the right has an additional 54 studs.

The CWSCC group/365 racing does not screw around when it comes to their ice racing. I've only driven studs once, and was some of the most fun I have ever had.

I see what you did there.

And I imagine you put on a different set for the ride home? Or trailer it? I can't imagine studded tires like that do too well on an actual road...

Not my tire. I am just good friends with most of that crew. The tires are not driven on roads. Often they install on the ice.

Mine is parked for the winter. Those belong to a group of friends in WI. They host events where the OP was at.

I have driven on studded tires in my Uncles truck on pavement. its loud and feels a bit weird. Its not legal in many places.

Are you happy with the General Altimax Arctics? I am planning on running those next winter...based on your video it looks like they could handle just about anything you can throw at them. Whoever brought out the convertible is a hero, great video

This would be my fourth winter with Generals here in Chicago and I have yet to get stuck somewhere :)

I ice raced for years with those guys and WAG further south on Lake Sinissippi in Hustisford. It looks like WAG has one there coming up this weekend.

When there is no snow on the lake it's quite possibly the most frustrating thing you can do in a car. You get going too fast or too out of control and you just slide forever. I raced the last couple years I did it in my WRX on studded rally tires. Those home made ones have a ton of grip, it's like driving on a track on slicks.

The wheel to wheel racing is awesome too, but obviously need a beater for that.
