CF wrapped dash panel
1 Attachment(s)
The beginning of creating wrapped parts for my car. I don't know why scion made it 2 pieces, but it's not anymore.

Looking good! I'd like to see the finished product in dash ;)

This thought just occurred to me, but is the size of the opening in the BRZ the same as the FR-S? If not (if Subaru doesn't use a Toyota-wide radio) we may have the start of a solution to the gap/fitment issue with aftermarket radios. (I know, wishful thinking) |
what other stuff u wrapping? and what is your method
|
Brz is the same.
Want badly. Cost? |
Coming along nicely. Hopefully have it in clear in the next few days. Should be ready for clear tonight.

Very nice.

That looks very nice! Excelent job.

Thanks guys!

Was it two pieces because of the air bag?

It's in the dash above the console panels.

They did it in two pieces due to mold flow. Injection molding that as one piece would be difficult due to the asymmetry and large opening in the middle. Nothing to do with the airbags either, as someone else suggested. The airbag on the passenger side deploys out of the top of the dash. |

was just guessing based on the fact that the radios are only a standard 2DIN height, but not width. Toyota radios are "extra wide" and cannot be replaced by an aftermarket radio without using a trim panel, so it was wishful thinking on my part that the Subaru version required a different (narrower) trim piece that was a standard 2DIN width. This did make me think though that if you were going to wrap the trim pieces anyway, it wouldn't be too difficult to fill the gap in and make it look like it was the correct size for an aftermarket radio. |
I think that the glossy cf panel will reflect the sun light while driving, it can very be annoying

Yeah, you could fill the gap if need be. If I were wrapping them in something other than carbon fiber though (some sort of fabric), I would probably still keep them separate. I'm guessing the back side wasn't designed for it to pop off as one piece, and it might make future disassembly more difficult. |
Where can I buy that shift knob!?

How much to do mine if I ship it to you?
|
I've been looking into doing this myself. can't wait to see the end result
|
Have you gotten the clear on yet?

Wow. That's an awesome job.

From the pictures its difficult to see the fine detail, but it looks like you did a pretty good job. Wrapping can leave odd textures on the surface from the texture of the fabric, or vacuum bagging materials imprinting on the surface. I work with CF, FG, and Kevlar and its difficult to get a pristine surface finish on visible cosmetic surfaces, even with a perfect mold.
If the piece was up on the dash top I'd be more concerned about reflection, but the dash front shouldn't be too bad. Maybe hit the clear with a really high grit compound (like 3k or something) to get a slight matte to the finish. Maybe check with a body shop guru on how to get a slightly less than super-gloss finish. |
Personally I feel like carbon fiber with clear over it would be way too reflective. I think if I do something similar it will be the carbon fiber look leather like in the new m3's with it as a trim option. Much more elegant imho.

pm me for price. thanks!
|
PM me again for price again wo/core.
|
matte clear would also look pretty good, i think.
I had a setback while i was sanding the parts for final fitment, and will need to re-do them. it's going to be a little bit, guys as i have some STI parts for a friend's show car to complete first. |
