The time and effort to hammer that out... Seems better to just buy a new hood. Did you piss someone off on your way to the movies?

It has been reported several times that even body shops won't even try to fix the aluminium hoods. Just get a new one.

That was the story I got when mine was in the shop for the fender bender. Mine wasn't damaged in the collision but I was thinking of having it repainted anyway. It's got a couple of very slight rock dimples in it and none of the shops would even touch it. The would only offer to get me a new one.

When seeing cases like this, i guess, there is use for those video registrators. To me it wouldn't be so much as to try get money from culprit, but more for own psychological comfort via not leting such jerks go completely unpunished. Or to know, if met again, whom to punch in face.

Not sure about everyplace but here I doubt the police would do much even if you handed them the name and address of the person that did it. I know for sure they wouldn't bother searching just from a video. They have much larger issues to deal with.

Just got an estimate for a new hood on mine. $1,300 When it's kinked like that - most shops can't or wont attempt to straighten it. Aluminum just doesn't move like steel.

Wow. The estimate I got was half that, including a new hood. Some of the savings was because they had to remove the old one anyway, but that wouldn't account for that much of a difference I wouldn't think.

I wonder if getting a carbon hood would prevent it from getting all bent up like that. Increased torsional rigidity or something

You would probably just end up with cracks and be no further ahead.

I think it would take a lot more to get it to crack though. I'm not sure how strong the "carbon" hoods are (versus actual more expensive type), but I remember watching a documentary on porsche and the floor of the 917 was made of the stuff and it was paper thin apparently, and stronger than steel. I thinking cracking it would involve a 250 lb male jumping up and down. I'm willing to wager this was a bunch of 120 lb 12 year olds lol

It isn't just weight it is the pressure points. Also talking a huge difference between the floor of a Porsche and most aftermarket hoods. All carbon fiber is not created equal. I have seen exactly 3 CF hoods in real life and all of them were cracked to some degree or another and that was just from closing them frequently.

This is in Milipitas? Wow! These people just don't have regards to other people's property. Hopefully insurance can cover and get your car back how it was before. The culprit should be punished or let karma take care of that person.

Got caught in a huge hail storm 2 years ago... they fixed all the panels (sucked out the dents etc)... except the hood. They just took that off and replaced it without question.

Thank you all for your opinions... I guess I'm just going to eat my deductible to get it fixed. :(

And this didn't happen in Milpitas, I was San Fransisco, at the time, and when I spoke to the security guards they told me it was a common thing for teenagers to do.

Well, almost worth it...

I've had a successful PDR shop pull a dent from vandalism, on one of the hood creases. It came out perfectly. I think if really comes down to the skill of the PDR specialist.

As for OP's case, too big a dent to fix.

They are only there to protect the property not your car. Ever read the fine print on the parking garages? Besides they don't get paid enough to give a dam.
