2017+ (kouki) 86 GR at Fuji Speedway

I'm at Fuji Speedway for the WEC 6 Hours of Fuji, and given that Toyota Gazoo Racing is one of the top teams in LMP1 all the GR cars that were announced last month are on display.

In case you wanted a refresh of the polarizing opinion: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122110

A complete 86 GR is on display here, with a very good looking rear diffuser on the car. The diffuser is completely different than the 13-16 zenki model.

Specs include:
  • "performance suspension" with 10mm lowering
  • big brake kit 6 piston front / 4 piston rear
  • Rays forged wheels
  • 215 tires front 235 tires rear... Michelin Pilot Sport 4
  • front/side/rear aero w/ rear diffuser
  • center exit exhaust
  • Recaro seats
  • GR-spec torsen diff (not sure if it's more aggressive or different final drive)

Anyhow, here's the pics. I'm headed to Mega Web on Monday, if there's another car on display I will get more info.

Great pictures, thank you!

Brakes aren't the same as TRD though ;)

Thanks for the catch, I took a pic of the spec sheet and it doesn't have any branding on the calipers.

I should note that neither TRD nor Gazoo Racing makes any of their own brakes. These usually are some type of OE supplier rebranded, but definitely not Brembo.

IMO, the Rear muffler area has a 3 out of 10 design rating, looks like going back 20 years as far as design goes

Nice!

Impureclient 10-14-2017 12:27 PM

Are there any Japanese speakers in here that can translate Zenki and Kouki?

Zenki - pre-facelift
Kouki - facelift.

Very cool, I love the rear end and brakes.

Interesting that the rear tires are 235 and fronts 215.

KalbiCool88 10-14-2017 01:26 PM

I wanna see pics of the Recaros!

Even more interesting is the factory Michelin Pilot Sports.

Awesome pics man! Hope you don't mind, but I shared the pics on our local FB page for people to see. Thanks!

chaoskaze 10-14-2017 08:40 PM

You said there is a spec sheet? show plz :bonk:

DuMa 10-14-2017 08:51 PM

i love the lip spoiler. but dont really understand why its not body colored.

Ro_Ja 10-14-2017 11:21 PM

That exhaust looks really stupid. Should have been twin tip like a Porsche GT3 or trapezoid like a Koenigsegg.

I second this so hard. It looks disgusting.

mav1178 10-15-2017 06:45 AM

Recaro seat pics (car was closed and rained even more today). All of the interior stitching (including the suede hood over the gauge cluster) is in white.
I should note the Recaros have factory side air bags.

No man, Tiny 2.0L engine no need for anything more than one.. just extra weight.

nikitopo 10-15-2017 11:47 AM

Hmm.. Tsutsiya always suggested to keep the tires squared. Now I see 215 front and 235 rear. Tsk tsk..

Vic4uf 10-15-2017 03:15 PM

Love the seats but hate the rear exhaust

nikitopo 10-15-2017 03:51 PM

It looks that they took the rear exhaust look from the grmn 86:

But these have factory airbags specifically designed for this car's SRS.

Do we have airbags on our stock seats? I think airbags are on the side columns, right?

Edit: Nope! The stock seats also have the side airbags.

nitro_alltrac 10-15-2017 07:33 PM

I like it. Not crazy about that single exhaust, but the rest looks good. Really like the wheels and LOVE those seats.

Side airbags in factory seats, which is why you have to buy a SRS canceller or resistor to remove the SRS airbag light when swapping to aftermarket bucket seats.

The airbag you are thinking of is the curtain airbag, which runs from the A-pillar to the C-pillar.

strat61caster 10-15-2017 08:12 PM

This is the first time I want different seats, if those things are as comfy as they look sexy I'll delay retiring for another year to afford them.

HachiRokuX 10-15-2017 11:57 PM

I really like those wheels. I wonder how much they'll cost..

ToySub1946 10-16-2017 01:01 AM

Certainly I appreciate time taken by the op to show us something new.

Sorry, but I have to just yawn.

I was totally disappointed to not see a completely new body for the 86 for the 2018 model year. They seem to be simply into more marketing of an old horse.

After all this disappointment, I can now deduce that this car platform will soon be gone...no replacement planned.

There's a reason why the Gazoo Racing name (and the car as shown here) is not shown outside of Japan.

Consumers such as your self is the primary reason why cars like the FR-S RS 1.0/2.0 exists in the first place.

The buying habit of the target audience in North America is completely different than the US. Toyota USA won't just bring this car over without doing their research.

The rear end fits in well with other current Japanese cars. It won't go over so well with the US crowd, so you're almost certain to see some type of redesign after focus group studies.

Mostly posting this since there's so much polarizing opinion out of the original GR discussion thread...

Hmmmm 215-235 stagger? Seems like lots of potential to understeer.

Damn, I want those seats with the side impact airbags. I know we can get the Recaro Sportster CS here but I want the airbags too. I'm hoping Toyota or Subaru release a version of the twins with those seats to the US market so I can finally get it.

They just did a refresh in 2017 so the odds of them doing anything major for 18 were remote at best. They will probably run with the refresh for at least two more years before there are significant changes. This is perfectly normal in the automotive world and certainly not an indication they are doing away with the model soon.

Quentin 10-16-2017 11:20 AM

I like it! When I was at Mega Web, they had the pre-refresh GRMN 86 there, but not the newest.

still no armrest..... its like toyota stopped caring

Tcoat 10-16-2017 12:01 PM

Why does everybody seem to think the GR represents the next production car? Doesn't matter what it has or doesn't have it is a limited car for Japan only. We may see some bits and pieces here eventually but that does not make it the new model.
