60k service time!

I'm sad that getting my car serviced has to be a research project, but the Toyota dealerships in my area do not offer a 60k service matches up with suggested maintenance on my 2013.

I'm mostly doing highway driving - about 40 miles round trip from home to work. Nothing upgraded in the car (besides adding an arm rest) and I have only done tire rotations and oil changes up until now. I'm not the kind of person who will do any maintenance myself (I'm sure you are judging me and that's fine).

Here are the suggestions from the Scion manual:

- engine coolant
- brake fluid
- auto transmission fluid
- air & cabin air filters (I have a reusable K&N filters so I'll rinse them)
- oil change (I'm over on mileage so I need to get it done)
- tire rotation (I can do this for free @ discount tire)
- spark plugs (really? already?)

Since I will need to piece together my own 60k package, want to make sure I didn't miss anything.

The only interesting thing that the dealership's suggested 60k had was this:

- lubricate chassis & boots

Thoughts?

Lol, did you buy it from a ford dealership, the mind boggles.

8RZ 10-12-2017 04:11 PM

CV boots, maybe?

Slave cylinder boot?

jvincent 10-12-2017 04:11 PM

You should be able to get the 60k service done at a Subaru dealer.

Stang70Fastback 10-12-2017 04:27 PM

Your stock coolant is good for well over 100,000 miles, provided you use the same long-life coolant when topping it off :)

Have you done the rear differential yet?

I would have the brake service, oil change, tranny fluid change (if MT I would skip that) and coolent check done.
I would clean or change the filters myself (as you said) and get the free rotation.
With the nature of your driving I would hold off on the plugs for a bit. I am at 100K on mine with zero signs of any issue.

I am not judging anybody for not doing their own maintenance (although the last time somebody judged me for not doing it I ended up temp banned for a day so I hope nobody starts in on you for it)

+1 no reason not to do all of that stuff with the exceptions you listed, can't think of anything else.

imho cabin air filter is really underrated, it's the difference between your car blowing clean fresh air in your face or dusty dirty air when the car starts getting up there in age/mileage

I did the spark plugs at 60k and was glad I did, but if the car is primarily just driven around town I think you probably won't notice pushing the spark plug change later, whatever the dealer says about spark plug change now, I would be surprised if they charged you much less than $300 and some quotes have been $500+ for JUST spark plug change.

I was happy to DIY my spark plugs, but if I was facing a several hundred dollar bill, wasn't driving the car terribly hard or competitively, and I planned on selling it at some point down the road then I'd probably defer it too.

Edit: And as above coolant is 11 year replacement, ~137k miles, 75k miles after that, just inspection and top off at ~30k mile intervals, should check when you check the oil though

I am getting my plugs done at the end of the month so it will be around 110K or so. My TOB is starting to take on some very banshee like qualities so I can save some money by having it done when they have to lift the engine to do the plugs anyway.
I will ask them to give me the plugs so we can see just how they look after 98% highway driving for 3 years.

Good call on trying the Subaru dealership- they were the cheapest by far.

I bet good money they don't honor that price. Each spark plug for an FR-S is ~$20 and the service manual says you need to lift the engine. Makes sense when each spark plug is <$10 and it takes all of 15 minutes to change them with hand tools, but a shop should charge at least 1 hour of labor plus retail parts cost which would be $200. Took me ~4 hours in my garage but I'm an amateur.

If they do charge the lower price ask to get your original spark plugs back, a shady dealership might charge and not do the work...

Ok somebody please tell me what the heck a "Tire road force balance" consists of?
Who wants to bet the "Complete fuel system service" means they dump a $2 bottle of cleaner in the gas tank?

I don't think I would have this place service my car if they were paying me to do it!

Edit: "Reset TPMS"????? The more I read this the more angry I get.

For new tires, you should demand road force balancing.

For a 60k service it seems unnecessary that the tires would suddenly need to be re-balanced.

Meh. It seems a bit extreme for any time. I don't generally drive on glass surfaces where the minor deviation in a tire (even a low profile one) is even noticeable much les an issue.

This 60k menu was why I finally joined the forum (after just reading for 3 years!). I seriously thought I might be crazy because it all seemed so ...excess.

Do they also do a nitrogen purge on the tires? :D

I did my 60k service (100k km) when I had to replace my clutch thanks to a failed throwout bearing.

Initially I had the service tech (Toyota) look up the 100k service, and he had trouble finding it at first for some reason. When he eventually found it I told them not to bother with all of the stuff on the list and just do the spark plugs.

Since I do all my other service myself (track car) it didn't make sense to pay them for those bits.

Next step is to buy the tools and get them done yourself. Then the cost will be: $80 for spark plugs, $20 for oil, $10 for oil filter, $10 for air filter and $15 for cabin air filter. Subaru is not a premium brand, but the cost of maintenance is more than Lexus or Acura.

I get it. I love cars, but I don't enjoy working on cars. And I don't have a garage to store the tools or space in the house either (1920s house). I'm totally fine with paying a dealership every once in a while to do that stuff...

Some people here just don't get that. I worked on my own cars for over 40 years. That includes three full body off restorations. I no longer have the interest to do that work, no tools left, no good place to store them if I did and I have zero desire to be crawling around under a car in my driveway. Somehow that get's translated into not being an "enthusiast".

I will ask them to give me the plugs so we can see just how they look after 98% highway driving for 3 years.

What about fuel filter?

Think about an aftermarket clutch fork (Versus/Velox Engineering) as many have complained of it causing the TOB failures.

I no longer have the interest to do that work, no tools left, no good place to store them if I did and I have zero desire to be crawling around under a car in my driveway. Somehow that get's translated into not being an "enthusiast".

Yeah, an uneven driveway is a crappy place to work. That is the main reason I put off doing work. Now that a buddy has a lift in his garage I just go over there when I need it lol

I was thinking of doing the fork.

Even if I had a lift at my disposal I would probably have somebody else do regular maintenance.

Nice picture! Didn't realize that you are a female owner. I totally support your decisions.

I get it. I love cars, but I don't enjoy working on cars. And I don't have a garage to store the tools or space in the house either (1920s house). I'm totally fine with paying a dealership every once in a while to do that stuff...

When I hit 60 I slowly started drifting that direction. I have always loved working on cars and motorcycles. I still have the tools, a place to store them, and an enclosed workspace. What's fading is the desire. Particularly for things like the coilover/strut replacement on my F150. I don't mind getting under the car and I don't mind getting a little grubby - truth is, I still like doing that. I think, though, that I may have replaced my last clutch and, perhaps, plastigauged my last bearing. And that's OK.

There are many kinds of "enthusiasm." No one should be excluded because they don't spin the wrenches.

I recommend finding an independent shop you can trust. There has to be some good ones in a city as big as Dallas. It takes some initial research but it'll be worth it.

And that is most likely in addition to the charge to remount the tire in the correct spot on the rim. :bonk:

Yes but independent shops don't have loaners or wifi.

Ps, at the dealership and they told me the tranny fluid isn't serviceable on my vehicle. (Yes, it's an AT). Is this right ?

No that is not right. In fact it is far from right.

The AT fluid is shown on the schedule to be replaced at 60K miles (sorry the chart is all in kilometers)

Maybe because it requires Toyota fluid only? Sigh ...

There are compatible aftermarket fluids for the Toyota WS spec. Been down that road with my '05 Sequoia. I know Amsoil makes one.

What brand of dealer is this anyway?

lantsalot 10-16-2017 02:06 PM

Subbed. I'll be coming up on my 60k soon so this is all super useful information.

Well then they would have the tranny fluid and know when to change it. Zero excuse for them.
I would be finding a different service provider even if they didn't have WiFi.
