HOW TO: Remove Airbag and Steering Wheel
Here's a shot of the removed airbag
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-8...B0/s821/12+-+1 Before you do anything, let's remove the fuses so you don't piss anyone off honking the horn accidentally 50 times and/or screwing something up and blowing the airbag unintentionally. The fuses circled in red need to be removed, they are all horn related fuses and are also pictured on the fusebox cover diagram. http://i.imgur.com/oDwZq.jpg First you'll need to go the side of the steering wheel, there are 4 holes on each side but it's the bottom 2 you should be working on. There is a metal pin if you look inside the holes. You need to grab a screwdriver or something similar and push that pin inwards of the steering wheel, while simultaneously pulling the airbag. Do this to each pin on both sides and pull the airbag out, it is semi-difficult. Gave me a bit of trouble. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-E.../s1095/12+-+14 Now unattach the plugs from the steering wheel. http://i.imgur.com/YPqTI.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4...C8/s778/12+-+9 Now it is off the steering wheel https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-v...s/s778/12+-+10 YOU ARE DONE REMOVING THE AIRBAG! To remove the steering wheel there is a nut in the dead center of the steering wheel. Remove that and it should pop off. Or screw off. Not sure of the socket size though . |
You should find out if the scion emblem is the same size as the Toyota airbag emblems. If that's the case then you just gotta superglue (or some other really strong adhesive) it back on.
|
I need to see a finished product because the last picture you showed (with the Plasti Dip not cured) look terrible.
If it were me, I'd try to find a Toyota emblem that fits inside that recess and just try to even out the pin holes in the airbag cover. |
Awesome, you are my hero bro lol can't wait to fuck with my car :)

Yeah.
Lesson to all...don't do this. |
Thanks for the DIY. I don't know about the candy red paint and Toyota emblem but these steps will help for the JDM steering wheel cover swap. :happy0180:

The good news is this is my only crazy DIY mod, I am not one of those people that go and paint and mod every single thing, and then there's the plastidip crowd that sprays everything. I am just fully rebadging the car with Toyota. The only other appearance mods are HID's and the Five Axis kit and wheels. It's going to be a clean car I promise!

I do love me some PlastiDip. I've got another 5 gallons on order and am nearly done peeling the first dip job off the BRZ. I bought a better HVLP gun and am looking forward to laying on that vinyl look. |
I think I might do something similar. But I might find a good sticker or maybe even a custom vinyl to place in the oval before you put in the plasti-dip. Not sure how it would turn out exactly but thanks for showing your work.

Was hoping to see an 86 airbag installed.
Hmmm... T bagde looks so big. Try finding a smaller one |
Thanks! Wouldn't do it myself, but I've been waiting for a DIY on how to take the airbag off so I can do my GT-86 airbag swap. Yeah, I spent $800+ for it, big whoop, wanna fight about it? lol :)

I'll buy the 86 airbag once I can buy it from a legit parts website.

Excellent writeup!
Maybe some goo-gone or any other petroleum product may get that gunk off under the emblem with a bit more finesse? I was thinking of working a leather saddle soap into it to get it thoroughly clean. Still can't tell if its leather. Hahaha! Looking forward to seeing some more picture updates from others~ |

yeah.... not a fan. look's unfinished and tacky. would have been better to find something that actually fits in the spot. it's handy to know how the airbag comes out though.

Is it possible to remove the airbag completely from that cover and then reinstall?
|
I reccomend using tools like this to remove emblems. They are great to work on paint and interior panels so you don't scratch anything. At $7 you can't go wrong, if you cut on of their coupons out of a magazine it's even cheaper:

Don't remove it, you tried it, some like it some don't (self included), but it might help someone else come up with another idea or variation that someone else might like. And props to ya for touching a project the majority of us dont have the balls to fk with!
|
Yea I'm gonna have to agree. You had the right idea but horrible (in my opinion) execution. There are Toyota airbag emblems on ebay for like $20 or so. Idk about the size but the tabs look the same at least. The bumper emblem is just dangerous.

this is the tut i was looking for!!! btw i got a few question i not sure if any asked yet but, did you disconnect the bettery before doing this. If we decided to replace the airbag will the check engine light go on?

Check engine light does not come on but the airbag light does. I had to drive to Lowe's to grab a couple items with the airbag out. It's right behind my apartment so it wasn't a big deal. |
