2017 86 - Rear Diffuser
Hey Everyone,
A few weeks ago I totaled my Monogram Series FRS. I have recently purchased an 86 (Kouki). And visually the oem rear diffuser appears to be different (length) versus the older FRS/86/BRZ.(Yes im aware the 86 has a new rear bumper style) The old one to me is aesthetically appealing . Has anyone on here swapped out the new oem diffuser for the older one? Without me dropping coin and finding out myself. Thanks Everyone! - Wolf |
Just adding if anyone cares
Also to note, the rear bumper/ diffuser for the 86 (Kouki) is slightly rounder near the end (where the mudflaps goes). I actually replaced my 13’ FRS bumper for a 17’ 86 bumper, and I couldn’t apply the mudflaps to it. I had to order the 17’ mudflaps due to the different shape The 17’ BRZ seems to not have adopted the extra line that runs across the diffuser like the 86. At least that’s what I noticed. Not sure why, need confirmation. *edit: @Tokay444 I'm sorry, I don't mean diffuser, but I meant the black bottom part that houses the reverse lights and holds around the exhaust tips |
There is no OEM diffuser.
|
There is. Fake not really very functional one :)

Sorry if calling that black trim a rear diffuser is incorrect in your books. But it makes sense when describing location. *Parts Specialist for Das Deutsch. |

2013-16 had a factory add-on optional item that was called a diffuser. For 2017+ this was integrated into the bumper. If you want to be accurate you could ask if there were any rear bumper extension parts. |

That's exactly what it is!! Do you think that was Toyota's intentions? Any idea why Subaru didn't do this? just trying to get people thinking :) |

So... the rear add-on "diffuser" is still available for 2017 BRZ but not 2017 86 (since the rear bumper is redesigned). I'm guessing this is entirely for Subaru internal or STI reasons, since the 2013-16 bumper still allows use of STI parts. -alex |
Neither one of them are actually diffusers for anything more than a sales pitch.

Subaru has called it a diffuser since day 1, so while we all know it's not a "real" diffuser, using the term that they use is easier on everyone. Back to the subject, the new 86 doesn't have one available from Toyota as of yet. The aftermarket may have one though, and I bet the real diffuser from Velox fits... |

You are not politically correct enough for all those lip-less cars out there! It's discrimination!
|
Just call it a bumper cover. That's what it is.

The bumper is 100% covered.
|
Are you guys talking about the valence?
Subaru technically calls it a diffuser and in the official BRZ brochure Subaru claims the channeled roof and diffuser both reduce drag. Low .28 Coefficient of Drag2 To a sports car, wind is like weight—the more of it you have to move, the more it takes from your ability to perform. Features like a channeled roof and rear diffuser help the BRZ cut through the air, sharpening the performance you’ll feel. |
All the rear bumper cover acts like is a parachute.
Put an actual diffuser on it and you'll notice the difference. |

I have a velox diffuser and yes it’s better but that’s not to say the oem one is a parachute |
norcalpb: oem one is parachute depending on what catback is used, as it works together with catback-s muffler. If there are different shaped aftermarket mufflers, eg. longitudinally placed or at angle, then they would benefit from extra diffuser or in general some aero element to to direct flow around stock bumper cover's edge.

Show me how the diffuser covers 100% of the bumper? |
There is no diffuser.
There is bumper cover, and that bumper cover covers 100% of the bumper. A bumper cover being what lay people call a bumper, and a bumper being what lay people call a crash bar. Does that explain it for you to understand more easily? |

Feel free to educate Subaru too, but feel free to place blame on their marketing department. https://parts.subaru.com/a/Subaru_20...10-591-01.html |

The topic is of a 2017 86..., and I’m pretty sure the BRZ is also one piece.
|
57704A in the link to parts your provider shows it to be all one piece.

The 2017+ BRZ has the same rear bumper as 2013-16. So tell me... how is the rear bumper all one piece? The add-on rear lip is still available: https://parts.subaru.com/p/Subaru_20...5610CA000.html |

LOL. Is that what you guys have been talking about this whole time? That's not a diffuser either!!
|

Yes, this is what we've been talking about the entire time. If you want to argue about functionality, we are not talking about that. There's a reason why this subforum is called "Cosmetic Modification". |
Remind me not to come back in here.
Why does this even exist? |
wow. you guys are still doing this?

Subaru markets the optional diffuser as functional but who knows. |
