Mine started stalling today

I've always had the RPM dip, but today my FR-S (AT) stalled about 5 times when I was going to wash it at the touchless wash. I drove about half way in and it died. It died 4 more times trying to back out and park. I was going to call roadside assistance, but decided to limp it to the dealership not far away. I turned the A/C off and with the rpm's up it seemed ok driving it there. This is the second time I've had the car in, the first time was for RPM dip which the dealership didn't take seriously as a problem. Now it's stalling with NO CEL (yet) and I said to them I don't want it back until it's fixed because I don't want to be stranded somewhere with this car. I asked my salesman to also escalate this to Scion Canada because the rpm dip is a widespread problem which on my car has led to stalling now. I've also noticed that when the engine is cold, the car seems to slightly 'lurch' between shifts like there's drag in the drivetrain.

At least they gave me a loaner for the time being. My mileage is 2500kms.

Oooff, that is rough man. I got the RPM dip a couple of times while breaking her in but not since. Hope it is an easy fix and your ride is back in your hands soon.

I had a really bad rpm dip last week when I was parked with the engine running. I thought it was going to stall, but it did not. This is an issue which has slowly got worse on my car and I only wish it had thrown a CEL.

SUB-FT86 07-20-2012 03:43 PM

I'm surprised auto's can stall. First I ever heard of it.

MVJ1975 07-20-2012 03:49 PM

Ouch! Hope they get that fixed for you fast.

I wonder if this happens only to AT vehicles...

I've noticed that RPM dip happens in first when you attempt to launch, but have to step on the clutch again because the car in front doesn't know how to step on the gas. I haven't experienced an RPM dip in neutral yet though

I think your car was telling you it didn't want to go into that car wash haha. I heard that even touchless car wash can leave swirls. All depends on how careful the staff is.. Good luck with the fix.

I have an MT and the idle is all over the place...start up at 1400-1600 then it drops down to 800 then up to 2000 and settles back down around 600-800 then dips to 400, shudders a tiny bit then back to 600-800. Stays there for a while then drops down to 400 again and shudders then back to 800 then up to 1000 and then back to 800...etc, etc...very reassuring...and the crickets are getting very restless the more mileage I put on her...at around 1600 miles now...

My idle sometimes drops to 600 rpm which didn't feel normal. I usually blip the throttle and all is well but it's concerning as I've just past my break in 1k miles (1600 kms)

Take video and get it looked at. You have a warranty, don't wait on that.

I've had my idle dip once or twice, but not like this. This sounds like something else more serious.

The squeaking is already known and is fuel pump related, it's just a noise. They'll replace the pump for you if you take it in for that.

Guy seriously, DONT SIT ON THIS STUFF! Get it fixed under warranty. It'll cost you a heck of a lot more than just time without the car later on.

I don't have much confidence that it'll get fixed, yet. I will be taking it in to have it documented though, so when they (Toyota/Subaru) do figure out what causes it, it'll be taken care of. I have a warranty, and I'll get a free loaner when the time comes...no worries! :)

Got the car back, nothing the dealership can do right now to fix it until Toyota has a fix. According to the data log, my car stalled because it was using port injection as I tried to accelerate. The tech thinks it's ecu software related and that there is definitely a problem.

If it continues to have issues (which I fully expect) and no fix is made available within a reasonable time frame then I will be requesting a buyback.

WOW - I wonder what stalling will do to your auto tranny. First time I have ever heard of an auto stalling out.

The rough Idle is soo embarrassing. The car literally shudders. I hate when the drop coincides with when your deciding to start driving...

Tranny should be fine from the stall. Its like turning your car off in gear.
