If money were no object...

You've got a Toyota/scion/Subaru... and a fat bank balance.

What would your ultimate build on your 86/frs/brz be?

Engine swap, mad FI or a pink interior... let's hear it. Just for fun.

Darth Khan 09-28-2017 11:54 AM

Good question: I think if money was no object my ultimate build would be this...

Base Model:

Fully Moded:

This.

Tcoat 09-28-2017 12:11 PM

Realize it is not within the scope of the question but I wouldn't have a Twin.

tacos 09-28-2017 12:13 PM

To be off topic in off topic actually means you are on topic since it is off topic and if you are on topic then you are actually off topic.

I wouldn't own one to begin with but for the sake of the thread, yes, a good LS swap. I'm talking AC and heat, all gages work, and so on. Almost as if it rolled out of the factory that way. An LS7 with some long tubes and a nice exhaust would be pretty cool in one of these.

In that case why not just get a Vette where that engine belongs?

That is what coilovers are for.....

Besides that, even if you keep the leafs they still handle better than 99% of vehicles out there so it seems like a silly reason to dismiss the platform. Especially when there is an easy solution.

Serious answer,

End goal for me is to have my FR-S be a true Grand Touring corner carver like the chassis aspired to be.

-Sound deadening for quiet backroads and freeway cruising, all the little rattles and creaks eliminated so it feels tight as a drum
-Full alignment capability for maximum grip (basically the alignment parts I already have, camber plates, lca's etc.)
-Custom valved Bilstein double adjustables for moderate lowering, plush ride, superb handling, and durability, +swaybars based on testing
-Whiteline bushing inserts where they improve the car's feedback without adding NVH
-High quality summer street tires for occasional autox and track duty, maybe 17x8 for street and track and I'd probably try a set of 17x9 with R-comps for autox but may just live with being noncompetitive and having fun (I can run summer tires year round out here)
-Experiment with engine mods, I'd try Edelbrock supercharger and the Jackson Racing supercharger, maybe the Works turbo, all emissions legal, and pick the one I like the character of the best, maybe long term someone will have an NA build together but with unlimited money that means that maybe I could figure it out (or pay someone), it seems like some massive headwork+tune could yield a few ponies that rival having a header+tune, but I'd want it to pass emissions. Honestly it may end up stock after spending $10k+ on different engine mods.
-oil cooler (I'd like an integrated oil+water radiator if it can handle the FI kit)
-custom paintjob and a little ducktail spoiler

To really build it how I want and perform the experiments and know 'this is the best this car can be for me' would be tens of thousands of dollars. People have already spent more on the 86, people will spend less and get more power, more speed, better laptimes, I don't really care. I want a car I can spend a day or five cruising backroads out to whatever track day or autox I choose, beat on it all day on the track/autox and head home in comfort knowing the car will keep on trucking for decades to come. In reality I'll take shortcuts, I won't have the baller dampers or be able to try multiple FI kits, but I think I can get close over the years.

There are better cars to make into racecars at this point, and horsepower monsters, and hell even grand tourers, I'd be better served with a stock 911 or that awesome Mercedes AMG GT R, but I like the 86 and plan on keeping it for a long time and as a tinkerer at heart it will go through many many iterations, 'better' cars can't tickle that itch.

imnotsureaboutbrz 09-28-2017 02:43 PM

I know exactly what I would do. I would get the 2017 Toyota 86 limited edition in Halo white and swap a 2JZ motor in it!

nextcar 09-28-2017 02:48 PM

Hmmm... let me think about this.

Actually, money was absolutely no object at all. I can afford practically any car made and have owned several cars with list prices in the 6 digit price range.

What did I buy and modify?

Used 2013 FRS with 12K miles for $17,500.

Put in a used bespoke stereo head unit for $200.
Put on used TRD exhaust for $500
Put on new TRD lowering springs for $100.
Put on take-off TRD wheels with michelin pilot super sports for $800
Put on a used trunk lid with spoiler (my car did not have one) for $280
Put on fake rear diffuser for $64
Put on TRD shift knob for $60
Put on fog light kit for $120
Put on aftermarket backup camera for $70
Put in used differential with 4:56 gears for $600
Put on stubby volkswagen antenna for $9
Put in dash camera for $80
Put on TRD intake for $100

Could not be happier with this car!

Disclaimer: I have some used TE37s that I will eventually put on for fun.

Nothing wrong with a mono-leaf in a street car. It works extremely well and cuts weight.

I also like the 86 for all it's pros and cons.

I'd add 1 thing more to my list.... a sequential gearbox ;)

Nice. So no engine/power mods?

How did that diff feel/affect the car?

Sapphireho 09-29-2017 12:19 PM

I would do exactly what I did. My car now is just what I wanted. I love how it looks, plenty fast, super fun, handles great, comfortable, not too stiff a ride that the wife doesn't like riding in it, big enough trunk for weekend getaways, smog legal, sounds great but not too loud. Affordable enough that it is a driver, not a garage queen. Even with all the performance mods, I still came in about $20k under what my budget was for my new toy. I will probably get some Bilsteins and get my windows tinted, but basically I'm finished. I took a couple wrong turns in the build (should have went FI from the get-go) but I had fun doing it.

No engine mods unless you count the TRD intake. The gears improve acceleration- it is subtle but nice. Might have been tempted to go 4.88 if I had a chance to drive it before deciding. Note the 2017 manuals upped the rear gears to 4.30; 2013-2016 all had 4.10 in the usa

Gunman 09-29-2017 01:27 PM

It would be really tempting to drop the BRZ shell, on top of a Riley GT chassis. At that point, I'd be looking at the AWD setup from a STi, or LSx into it.

JRI hydraulic adjustable coilovers, so get some ground clearance when needed, and still have the JRI performance at any ride height.

Full splitter, and true flat underbody, into a rear diffuser...

Good grief, this would truly be a race car, on the street, LOL. Good thing money is my current limiting factor!

weederr33 09-29-2017 02:11 PM

The most expensive drop in air filter available for the twins.

Allch Chcar 09-29-2017 10:14 PM

I'd probably wash it and clean out the inside. Call it a weight reduction.

Hmmm, interesting ideas!
Alas, the money factor is real (but for those of us who're married probably a good limit!)
