SIMPLE! Beginner Build Questions
First off I would like to start by saying that I made this thread as a place for beginners just starting in the aftermarket community and need explanation on things and why or why not it would be smart to fit that specific turbo for the goals of their car.
Let me first start with my build: I am about to purchase a 2015 scion frs with 42k miles. My goal for this car is to basically make it a mustang killer and then maybe later add flex fuel and reinforced components on e85 and make it a GTR killer lol. Looking for about 300-320 at the wheels on 91 with a kraftwerks supercharger (maybe c30) and whatever I can get on e85 (have seen in 400-450 range with built motor) I was going to start by asking the thread what should be the first steps that I can do easily myself. (swaybars, wheels, tires, etc) I know before I go forced induction I should do some prep mods to support the added power. I was going to start with wheels and tires and a big break kit, then swaybars, then the supercharger. As of right now I don't want to change suspension if i can get away with it. I dont want it to be more stiff than it already is. IS THIS SAFE AND OK? |
Are you sure you want to buy an 86? Would you be better off just buying a mustang if this is what you are looking for? If you are primarily looking for power, it may be more cost effective to start off with a car that already has more power or factory turbo
|
Yes, ik it sounds dumb but my dads super cocky friend has a stock 2017 mustang and I cant have that same car as him. I would never hear the end of it.
Also, and more importantly...I like the driving characteristics of the frs/brz/86 much more than the mustang and look forward to heavily personalizing the frs platform as it allows you to do so easily. |
Not trying to be a ****, but there's no need for another thread on these topics. This whole forum is a place for beginners just starting in the aftermarket community that need an explanation on things and why or why not... etc.
The best advice to all new users, the search function is your best friend. These cars have been out for 5 years now, and I can almost guarantee you aren't doing anything revolutionary or asking any question that hasn't been asked already. If you've got a question, 95% of the time there's an answer for it somewhere on this forum already. If not, there is a thread where these sort of questions are meant to go. Like I said, not meaning to rain on your thread. It does seem like it was well intentioned, but it honestly just creates more confusion for beginners by spreading information around in more places than necessary. As for your question, I'd recommend asking it in the Suspension | Chassis | Brakes section of the forum. The guys from CSG and/or RCE will likely chime in and are great sources of information/help, as are many of the users on here. Best of luck with your car! |
IMO who cares what someone else thinks of what YOU chose or can afford to drive.

V8 swap.

I though this thread was a legit beginner guide, clicked on it and find out its a troll. :(

These FR-S cars are fantastic at from a roll drag racing on the interstate, you couldn't have picked a better platform! Great choice.

I was trying to make it a legit thread but the internet is still the internet and wont let me find good info. Sorry just do what sharkbait88 said, go to one of the main forum pages and ask about something similar to what is already being said and then ask your question for the best chances at a response.

Good luck with your build, just be smart about it and research the fuck out of anything before you buy it. |

Admins, the op is lazy and doesn't want to search. Delete this thread. Waste of a page.

1) You're starting with the wrong platform. Mustang killer? Why not just mod a Mustang?
2) The KW SC kit sucks. Edelbrock, Harrop, and Jackson Racing are the three high quality superchargers. 3) Wait a second, supercharger? I thought you wanted to make lots of power? Get a big boy JDL kit, Flex fuel kit like the motoeast setup, and a built short block. Either way, this is the wrong car to hunt down power in unless you just want to V8 swap it. A blown motor 86, with a crashed vette driveline sounds like a good way to smoke a stang, though. These cars have made good power in the past, your best off trying to replicate a well put together package. Oh yeah, and you should prolly get better at searching with all you're trying to accomplish here. |
I'll say this right now. If you are looking for power i wouldnt recommend a supercharger. While there are definitely people out there who have made decent power on one, the average i've seen is around 400 whp on E85 on a dynojet.
If you want to make big power easily i highly recommend a turbo. The Ptuning turbo kit can already hit 400 whp+ without any other upgrades. The SBD and JDL kits (which are half the price of the Ptuning) can hit 400+ whp on E85 and a turbo upgrade. |
Why are you posting a suspension question in the Engine portion of the forum, especially after you already posted in the Suspension forum (twice).
Also, nothing about your proposed plan is simple. |

Do you want to talk about turbos or superchargers? You started a thread with the intention of gathering turbocharger information, then want to do a SC kit. Might want to frame your questions properly so people take you more seriously. -alex |

Buy a different car, if you think you need XXX horsepower to slay giants there's cheaper ways to accomplish your goals.
https://i.pinimg.com/736x/3d/85/7d/3...-rally-car.jpg http://www.soloperformance.com/asset.../fcfd_logo.jpg You can get a 400+ hp Corvette (C5 Z06 or any C6) for less money than building a proper FI 86 costs. Quote:
If you follow the good info provided in this thread you'll save yourself at least a year of your life and thousands of dollars. |
$5-10k on built engine
$5-7k on turbo kit with flex fuel and tune $2-3k on BBK $2-3k on basic rims/tires/suspension Probably should consider a tranny swap too, or save cash for when you blow one, and probably consider building up the rear diff too. These are basic prices. Then you can really show those stock Mustangs and GTR's who is boss. |

I was saying more with regard to rims n some suspension mods. Probably doesn't need $4k HREs or to go big on suspension for straight line performance when he already said suspension mods were not high on his list. |

One thing I didn't mention was installation costs if you don't do your own installs. So ya several more k for that possibly, depending.

The OE Michelin Primacy are quite good, I tracked them twice and wish I had kept them instead of putting on ZIISS many years ago. What's your experience with them? And they're certainly not cheap (currently $700 on sale on TireRack). Try out a set of <$400 >400TW all seasons, now those are cheapo commuting tires. Hell there are no less than a dozen tires you can order on TireRack right now for less than half the price of a set of Michelin Primacy HP's. Trying to be fast without good tires is pointless, all you'll do is make a lot of noise and at best entertain yourself. Great tires, stock suspension, and a good driver will outrun big fat tires (even with the same tire compound) and a >$4k suspension with a mediocre driver all day long. I know, I've been the latter car. |

For a guy wanting to "beat" a stock Mustang GT or GTR, I don't think he was referring to beating them around the Nurburgring. Probably rolling races around town or on the highway. For some basic price quotes, those figures are fine. |
