Weird object between dash and windshield, please advise

So today I was getting ready to drive and noticed something..odd.. on my dash right below the windshield.

At first I thought it was a dead bug (since I've had some ant issues recently that went away), so I tried grabbing and pulling it a bit thinking it'd come right off, but instead the more i pulled the longer it seems to get, and it seems sort of stuck in there. Wtf is this? Did a wire, insulation, or something normal get pulled out somehow and then I screwed it up by pulling it more? Do I need to take the brz to a dealer to get it checked out? Honestly a bit concerned...

It almost seems like a dry corn husk texture, which is partially why I thought it was a dead bug or something.

Please help :\

For realz?

Dude stop driving asap!!
That a super dangerously infectious dry leaf. Call 911 asap. Tell them exactly your situation. If you feel your life is in danger quickly find anything flammable and set your car on fire. By the time 911 comes they would have something to do.

If you feel 911 and setting your car on fire is too much I'll gladly take that rolling death trap off your hands for $300. I'll even come and pick it up.

Shitty meme, douchebro.

thats juste a piece of foam (with glue) that I assume is there to prevent the speaker grill to rattle against the windshield. I have to push mine back in every few weeks.

Tcoat 09-18-2017 06:15 AM

My car has a weird object between the steering wheel and seat back. I second the insulator foam. I cut it off with an exacto knife. No rattle.

totalled

8RZ 09-18-2017 08:52 AM

Shove it back in.

That's what she said.

spike021 09-18-2017 01:26 PM

Thanks for the helpful responses! I know the twins get random weird issues sometimes and knew this was probably something like that, but it's my first car so I wanted to be sure.

I might pull the speaker grill off after work today and see what I can do.

It doesn't look like you have to pull the speaker grill; just reach in with tweezers and pull the foam off.

Don't pull the grill. Those things never go back on right and you will end up with a buzz and rattle.

Or pull out before it's too late?

Be careful, the extra change in weight distribution with that dislodged like that will completely throw off the handling of the car.

Good thing I usually keep a water bottle in the left door bottle holder. That should balance things out, right? :burnrubber:

Handling went to crap on my car, then I realized I needed windshield washer fluid.

Object looks like a piece of tree bark

I thought my car had even less power than usual, and then I realized all the dirt was causing more friction while driving!

Yeah that's what I initially thought, or a dead bug like I mentioned earlier because of the ants I'd seen last week.

My handling slowly went to shit, then I checked the dipstick. It was in between the dots. Last oil change it was toward the top dot. Totally different car.

And yet I'm not the one that got freaked out, made a post on the forum, and wanted to go to the dealer to fix it.
Or do you want me to hold your hand and tell you it's going to be ok?

Sarcasm bro. Welcome to the internet.

Hahahaha. Well when a car is your first car that you've just made a big investment in, then sometimes something random is enough to get a bit worried.

And sarcasm is one thing, but you didn't add anything to the conversation other than being the typical internet jerk. That's your problem, not mine.

Since this is my first car I thought the E on the fuel gauge meant "Extreme", so I couldn't wait for the line to get there.

But instead of having extreme fun I realized E means expensive because expensive gas, and while that's one extreme, it's not the one for me. Now I'll sell my car for 300 bucks! :happyanim:

Isn't this just a standard feature for the 86?

Ganthrithor 09-20-2017 02:58 AM

Remove car surrounding foam piece, replace with new car.

I get a stupid rattle occasionally from that speaker grill..I would stuff it back in. For all I know mines missing :\ too scared to take the cover off for fear of making it worse.

Yeah, I ended up grabbing my multitool needle-nose pliers and basically pushed it back in as far as I could. Decided not to try messing up the cover. It's been a couple weeks now and I haven't noticed it popping back out. I'm guessing maybe one of the really hot days caused it to expand or something and that's why it popped out in the first place.
