The iPhone X / iPhone 8 thread

https://www.apple.com/apple-events/september-2017/

Still using my old ailing 5s, so need to upgrade. Thinking about the 8 right now as any bigger than that is probably too big for me, and it's releasing very soon. Anyone else getting one or the other?

$1000 for a phone? Are you kidding me???

The smart ticket, particularly if you want to stay with an Apple and like the small form factor, is to score a iPhone SE.

Best Buy has the iPhone SE on sale right now at $139 for a 32GB unit that is a "pay as you go/no contract" AT&T unit.

Assuming you are an AT&T customer, pop out the SIM from your 5s and put it in the SE - enjoy the much faster processor and much better camera

The 8 is only $699 or $799 ;)

I've never had an iPhone... but the X has me slightly interested.

Whoa, fancy ride! Didn't you know you could just get an '87 Tercel wagon off craigslist for just $500?? It will get you to work just as well as an FRS, while having much more luggage space! Way to blow money there, Flintheart Glomgold!

The only innovation I see here is the new "talking shit" emoji feature. Everything else is basically traditional Picasso.

Wireless Charging: Palm Pre
Face Unlock: Galaxy Nexus
Glass Back: Nexus 4
OLED: Nokia Luna
Maxed Out Screen: Sharp Aquos
Swipe Up To Home: Blackberry 10

The T-Rex demo is as retarded as that touch strip on the new MBP. The only reason they got rid of Touch ID is because they couldn't implement it under the OLED screen.

Just get an iPhone 6s.

The SE is definitely in the running to replace my Nexus 5X, I dig small phones, it does everything I would need it to do. I almost gave up on it after trying one until I found out that you can install Gboard on it for swipe-typing so I think I'm sold at this point, just waiting for my 5X to die a third time and hopefully get a refund for it out of Google. Fi just isn't much cheaper anymore and ATT offers better reception at a same or lesser price depending on how much data I churn through.

I sincerely dislike iOS but for form factor and hardware reliability I think I'll bite the bullet and forget how much I love vanilla Android's UI+Nova Launcher.

I saw the price on the new iPhone and noped out, I want small, affordable and relatively premium, I have no need for cutting edge specs at this time aside from reliability and good battery life. I was pretty happy to hear they're keeping it around and dropping the price by $50, and 32GB is pretty much all I need still.

Edit: My only fear is an OS update that gimps the outdated hardware of the SE, I got burned by that before on my first and last iPhone.
Edit2: Nifty, iPhone 8 sticking to 4.7" which is great, my HTC One M7 was that size and I like it so much better than my 5X as I had to use it for a few days while waiting for a 5X replacement.

Confusing.

Considering getting the X for the gf for her bday and Christmas since she is enamoured as heck with my spare iPhone I gave her to replace her aging android phone. Good thing I'm going to Alberta, the land of the free, and will have an unlimited amount of overtime available to me for the next month or two.

No Windows 9 either. Apple can't spare any opportunity to be a great artist.

TylerLieberman 09-13-2017 01:33 PM

Still rocking the 6S and will run it until it craps out. Then I'll just see what is the newest and least expensive iPhone that's available in stock and just get that one lol.

I had my iPhone 4 for like 3 years and it was perfectly fine. Had to replace the screen once because my dumbass dropped it. Otherwise, it was problem free until the last 30 days or so that I owned it. Started acting slow and dimwitted and decided it was time to replace.

I'm sure there are people who will go and get the X... and then they'll trade up 4 months later to get the XSE or something because they gotta always have the latest and greatest.

StraightOuttaCanadaEh 09-13-2017 02:39 PM

Just don't ever update it. Used to update all my iphones and they would eventually develop problems and not even last the length of the contract (2 years). I stopped updating with my current iPhone 6, and I mean not a single update since I bought it, and it's still performing the same as when it was new.

I gave up, every few months I check the market to see if there's anything interesting and then move on with my life. It's not worth it and the market doesn't actually move that fast with only 3-4 real updates per year worth knowing (which you'll hear about without much effort, like this thread) and at this point half of them don't actually have much impact.

Apple adopting a standard wireless charging standard may be cool and pan out in a few years. Imagine tossing your phone on the table at whatever coffee shop or casual restaurant of choice and getting a bit of charge out of it. No wires while you're on the go, no outlet searching, just a ubiquitous spread of surfaces to charge your devices. The tech was around years ago (Nexus 4 in 2012 was the first device I saw with it, Kia has a charging surface as an option in their cars now) but with Apple adoption it could push it more mainstream.

I remember with my 3G I held out until Apps stopped working which was only a 3-4 months after the update came out, I think that's changed over the past ~5+ years as apps strive to be backwards compatible and hardware has gotten better so yeah, I'll hold off on updates if I get an iPhone SE.

One positive to Android, they don't bother supporting devices long enough for the OS/apps to outpace the hardware!

It is actually easy for me. For the last 15 years work has handed me a cell phone and said "this is what you get we will upgrade when we feel like it".

My wife is always the first person in line for any new Iphone that hits the markets whether she needs it or not.

All decision making, tracking changes, comparing different types is all out of my hands.

Azzudien 09-13-2017 04:56 PM

Same for me, I have iphone 6 from work that I pay nothing for. We are allowed to upgrade every 2 years to the model behind the current one out.
Free phone with unlimited everything, makes me not care anything about what is currently being released

I found it odd that the earliest computer can be traced back in time to Adam and Eve.

It was an Apple.

But had very little memory, only one byte.

then everything crashed

LOL well it beats hell out of the pager days!
The problem is since they gave it to me they expect me to answer it 24/7. It isn't all fun and games.
Yes my subordinates have cell phones that I will call (it is the other way around about 90% of the time though) and if they are not company issued ones I do sign off on any costs they submit without a moment's hesitation.

He forgot that after initial boot the phone requires a password before allowing face unlock.

I find it funny that these leftover Apple big wigs all try so hard to dress casually and yet can neither imitate nor understand Steve Job's vision of the work uniform (idea from his visit to the Sony factory in Japan); Levis 501 blue jeans, Issey Miyake black turtleneck, and New Balance 99x grey running shoes.

Actually even the iPhone itself is a ripoff of the Sony Ericsson P800, just like how the iPod was a ripoff of the Sony Walkman, and how the MacBook Air was a ripoff of the Sony Vaio X505. Hell even the first PowerBooks were engineered and made by Sony. Jobs must have been a Sony fanboy. Greatness.

Then there's Jonathan Ive being a fanboy of Dieter Rams at Braun. Again greatness.

Almost forgot about the bit with Xerox PARC lmao! Absolute greatness.

I wonder if Steve Jobs put Tim Cook in charge of Apple on purpose to fucking totally destroy it for his own benefit by leaving a mark in the history books.

Didn't need spare batteries, it would last for days because:

1. It only made/took calls (you know actual phone stuff)
2. It was so expensive per minute you never actually made calls.

Seriously curious about the new Nokia though.

Dadhawk 09-14-2017 09:56 AM

I'm as much a gadget freak as the next guy but I really don't understand the "need" to swap phones every year or two. To me it's just a tool and as long as it's working I'm good with it.

I'd say on average I get a new phone every 4 to 5 years, and usually only because I'm forced to because I break it, or the Apps I need stop working. My current phone (a Droid Maxx) is still going strong after 4+ years.

The iPhone X is a nice $600 phone with a $400 logo on it.

Back in the mid 80s when we first got cellular service in Hong Kong, a 3 month subscription (didn't even include any airtime minutes) equals more or less the cost of the water bottle brick phone.

When the turtle flip phone came out I remember a lot of business people kept a shit load of spare batteries in the glovebox.

Snake

86geek 09-14-2017 01:13 PM

I have the cheapest smartphone that is going on 4 years old. Hard for me to justify paying $100.00-$1000.00 for a new smartphone.
I have a Samsung Note 3 which I paid only $1.00 on Amazon and case for it was only $3.00. Amazon stop offering those $1.00 deals about 2 years ago. My Note 3 was brand new not refurbished.

So paying anything more than $4.00 is highway robbery! Hahaha!
In fact I thought about going back to a flip phone but can't put apps on there. So I'll keep this phone until it breaks.

Apple is proprietary like their computers so I don't own any of their products.

People like new phones but I find it crazy to have the latest and greatest smartphones. They can all make calls and receive them. It's a mini pc in your pocket. IMHO I think it's a conspiracy by the cell carriers and manufacturers to want to make more money. After all that's what businesses do right, make $$$$. ;)

adamg 09-14-2017 02:47 PM

not sure why everyone jumping on the "omg its $1000" bandwagon. high storage iPhones have been $900-1000 for years. Also the Galaxies get up to $850 for an s8 and $960 for a Note 8 and nobody bats an eye lol

YukiHachiRoku 09-14-2017 02:59 PM

LG V30 has a nice aux jack that delivers hi-fi audio quality, this one feature alone makes me want to buy one since I like to wear noise cancelling headphones. Plus the aesthetics are just sexy, and good proportions, waterproof, beautiful OLED screen.

imho I think this phone is slightly better than the iphone X. Android has come a long way, and 8.0 oreo is streamlined OS. I'm sick of apple making you buy new cords/chargers every time a new phone comes, shit is getting old.

because the four digit price point starts to have a psychological effect on consumers. And since it's Apple, people seem to be ok with paying that much for a snobby status symbol. Whipping your phone out is the new pissing contest in society... :fighting0040:
