Throwback to decade ago...the first speculated image of our cars.

Just wanted to celebrate almost 10 years of following the production of this car. I believe this is one of the very first artist rendering of the twins. (I found it on my MySpace profile )

In 2007 I had magazine subscriptions to Motor Trend, Car and Driver, and Road & Track. I forgot which magazine had rendered this but I was 14 years old and obviously didn't have a driver's license.

However! I was an enthusiastic Gran Turismo and initial D player. I loved driving the Subaru WRC rally cars. And my dad had been selling Toyotas for 12 years so I grew up with him bringing home demos of Celicas, MR2 Spyders, and reading his old brochures of the Supra and older Celicas/MR2's.

This ultimately became the foundation for my interest in this car, and I'm proud to say that ever since the day I saw THIS picture of the "AE86 Revival," the enthusiasm has never died. Even though it looks a little hideous, my excitement for this car never faded.

This is the photo that "did it" for me. As soon as I saw it, I knew I eventually had to have this car.

http://www.thetorquereport.com/toyot...ept_34_new.jpg

Edit: The day I picked mine up and the moment I saw it for the first time, I immediately took a photo:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...1&d=1449517506

I still remember that distinct feeling of bewilderment that after all the years of watching the concepts and developments, it was finally here and it was MINE. (I had purchased it completely sight unseen, no test drive, etc)

Tcoat 08-24-2017 01:43 PM

I had never seen one in image (magazine, online, TV, etc) or real life until July 2014. The very first one I ever laid eyes on in any form is sitting in my parking spot outside.

I don't think that first render would have interested me in the least.

funwheeldrive 08-24-2017 01:58 PM

I started following this cars development around 2011. I remember seeing this mule and getting really excited.

I didn't buy mine until 2014 though

I remember the day it was released like it was yesterday...that was in October 2009. The first FT86 concept got to me as well even though they departed far from it. Kind of funny what I said about it when I posted it on Facebook...

For me, it was Chris Harris drifting the car around a Spanish circuit and giggling the whole time. That's when the fabled handling characteristics were confirmed as being real.

YES! I agree. I watched that video so many times, as well as many others.

I got excited at its launch: "A return to the FR sport coupe form of the early 90's"
I remember being so disappointed that the first batch had all these issues.
Thinking no turbo, no torque, no care. Thinking Toyota/Subaru pulled another 240sx fiasco like Nissan did with the KA24DE.

Then I grew tired of my GTI, bought a Monogram on a whim, in the middle of January, without so much as a test drive.

Still a happy camper.

JoeC 08-24-2017 07:11 PM

The Top Gear segment of Jeremy Clarkson sliding it while reading a book was what sold me.

mrg666 08-24-2017 09:17 PM

I think the final design looks even better than the earlier prototypes. Chris Harris and Carlos Lagos sold me my car.Although the salesman at the dealer preferred selling me a Camry, I exactly knew what I wanted :) Last time I went to dealer he was still asking me if I had driven my FRS in winter. Of course I did.

Looks like a Scion TC drivetrain mule.

Shinigami301 08-25-2017 08:56 AM

My experience was pretty much love at first sight- a red mockup of the FT86 at a show in Tokyo. I'm thinking it was 2009. I knew right then I would have one of these.

Looks like a "grab whatever parts we have out back and weld them together" drivetrain mule!

Also kind of looks like an evolution of a 4th gen VW Jetta but with 2 doors instead of 4.

This is the article that put the BRZ on my radar.

That is a good one that I have never read before.

So many years after its launch. People are still saying the same things.

I still remember the first time I spotted a red FR-S on the freeway. It was riding along side me and my first thought was "Wow, what flipping car IS that?!" Next thought: I want one. Flash forward a year later and there's one sitting in my garage.

Psy-q 08-25-2017 05:10 PM

I had that magazine, with that exact article. I was 17 at the time.

I remember it was on the bottom of the page in the future car speculation section I just can't remember which magazine it was. If I find out I want to buy a copy.

Love at first sight at the Atlanta car show in 2012. I had my credit card out to buy the model (car) but not for sale.

If one understands the mission of this car and one's life circumstances match.... well, get it on.

why? 08-27-2017 12:15 PM

I knew I wanted it the second I heard they were finally making a new sports car. It just took them awhile, then it took me a while to save up the money. And then the Subaru had the features I really wanted so I went with that. The car is wondrously awesome.

allowe 08-27-2017 04:05 PM

With my obsession with Japanese cars, i wanted a JDM car that was modern. I saw it parked in Toyota when I was shopping for a car and I fell in love. First time I tried to buy it, I couldn't afford it and I wasn't approved. After patiently waiting for a year and shopping around, I found a used one for almost half the price. Best purchase I've ever made :)

I look at that concept and can't help but think I'm just looking at a VW Scirocco. It looks just like a Scirocco. I'm glad they took the design elsewhere (nevermind that this is likely a rendering from someone who has nothing to do with the design), but I remember seeing chatter and pictures when the FT-86 concept dropped, and was very interested having been a Toyota loyalist for a long time (I still want an old MR2 someday). I followed any news I could find until the car finally arrived. I remember getting in a black one at a local auto show in 2013, I think, and just didn't like it at all. Couldn't get situated and comfortable, and walked away disappointed because I wanted to like the car.

Fast forward to the same auto show a year later, Toyota's offering test drives of a bunch of cars to spectators, one being an FR-S. Figured uh, hell yeah, took the time to really set myself up in the car, mirrors and all, and as soon as I turned onto the street I knew I was getting one. Back on the show floor they had a base model in Hot Lava and an RS 1.0 stickering for something like $32k, lol. When I saw it in Hot Lava in person, I knew I had to get it in that loud, unapologetic man-child color.

I look forward to traffic jams on the highway forcing me to take the long way home, now.

a few years ago before I even had my license I went and saw one of the newer 2 door coupe versions of the civic in person in the lime green color and fell in love with it. right before I was 18 my dad and I were looking into cars around that price range. I found the FRS and me and my dad both being gearheads went for it. I love it, I'm extremely fortunate to have it as my daily. so happy i didnt get the fucking honda lmfao

First time I laid eyes on the photo above, I knew I had to have it as my first car paid full in cold hard cash. Every subsequent bit of info that I researched and dealer visits that I made cemented the fact the car was made just for me - I was in my own little dream world. I put down a deposit for a spot on the waiting list (up to 12 months at that time) before I sat in or test drove one. I got lucky and jumped the queue when a red one (I ordered a "velocity orange" one) popped up after two months. It was one of the most tedious waiting periods of my life refreshing the tracking details from factory to cargo ship and finally landing in Australia. There were no regrets on the colour as I came to think of it as my poor man's Ferrari, getting looks and questions wherever I went in the first few months before the 86 scene exploded into existence.

Before the 86 I had absolute zero interest in cars (drove a 2001 Corolla). Since then, I've learnt to service the car, modify parts to my satisfaction and generally become a car nut. It says a lot when one of the first things I do now when I get in to work is click on the FT86 bookmark and then 'new posts'.

It's great to see the original concept from the cutout and read the stories of everyone picking up their twin for the first time. I like to think I will never sell my 86 and it will take its rightful spot next to the Ferrari or Lamborghini in my dream garage.

FR-Sky 08-28-2017 04:02 AM

When I first see this car, I feel like it is made for me!

Dadhawk 08-28-2017 07:26 AM

I guess it's a good thing I didn't see this when it first came out because I would have had zero interest in THAT car and probably wouldn't have paid any further attention to it.

I never anticipated a GT-Type Coupe. I really wanted a Hatchback because of the AE86. When I saw that picture I thought it was ugly and I knew they'd change it up. The thing that got me the most excited was Rear-wheel drive.

By the way I don't think that's an official render from either manufacturer, it's just artwork from a magazine artist.

Veloist 08-28-2017 10:39 PM

This is was the first time I saw the production version plus my reaction. I wasn't too surprised because it looked a lot like the FT86 II Concept.

Lol to the days where @ichitaka05 and I just sat around typing stuff on an old chat platform trying to figure out what this thing is gonna look like. And everyone and their mother hated me because I kept saying the Subaru wont be AWD....

Yeah those were fun day pre 2012, I wouldn't be who I am now today if it wasn't for this car.

We came a long way

ichitaka05 08-28-2017 11:26 PM

Haha here are some throw back for you guys.

First prototype 86 that Tada-san made both Toyota & Subaru drove and everyone was convinced on FR layout NA high rev engine potential.

That first prototype is particularly rough looking, lol. Wow!

Didn't know speculation of the car went that far back.

I do remember seeing the first round of concept cars and immediately loving it.

https://www.netcarshow.com/Toyota-FT...010-800-01.jpg

https://www.netcarshow.com/Toyota-FT...010-800-07.jpg

Of course, I think they botched the execution of the final product. While the production front end has grown on me, I still can't tolerate the production rear design.

Give me the first concept car's front, and combine it with the 2nd rear design.

Would have been perfect!

Project go all the way back to '06 iirc.

A lot of design concept came from FT-HS (which was shown in '07 NAIAS)
https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media...d0tjndfjpg.jpg

From there, nothing really happened til '09 TMS, Toyota show FT-86 which we call it MkI
http://www.toyota-global.com/showroo...86/ft86_01.jpg

From there went on dark age... for about an yr. Year later, they show FT-86 G Sports aka Mk1.5
https://www.supercars.net/blog/wp-co...tsConcept1.jpg

Then another dark age happened... for another yr. Then they showed FT-86 II aka MkII. They displayed both black and orange.

Black ver which a lot of ppl know/remember
https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media...pb4hc5pjpg.jpg

Orange ver not a lot of ppl know/remember
http://www.toyota-global.com/showroo.../ft86-2_14.jpg

From here, a lot of concept was shown. Subaru displayed BRZ Prologue
http://images.hgmsites.net/lrg/subaru_100362792_l.jpg

But a lot of ppl remember and became 86/BRZ is after seeing FR-S Concept which was shown at NYIAS which we call it MkIII
http://st.motortrend.com/uploads/sit...-quarters1.jpg

Subaru fought back with BRZ STI Concept same year
https://hips.hearstapps.com/amv-prod...-s-986x603.jpg

Everyone went mad crazy and excited to see sweet looking FR-S Concept and Subaru teasing us with STI thinking they gonna bring some awesome car... but they went on 3rd dark age again killing good chunk of fans/members. No info from Subaru and Toyota is only showing off their 86 in VLN 24hr Nur race with camo.
http://www.tune86.com/sites/default/...urgring_10.jpg

THEN finally '12 86/BRZ came out.
