What is everyone doing with their swapped cars diff.
I have been driving my swapped car for 2 years not knowing the reliability of the OEM diff., and wanted to just leave it in case it broke, well I just up graded to Whiteline bushings Kit KDT 925, and also bought the 924 which is even more rigid for a later install....maybe for the OEM engine car the difference after the kit is installed at 196 ftlbs of torque is minimal but for ours its a huge difference, wish I installed this a long time ago......I highly recommend it .....as faf as differential improvements what has everyone swapped doing?

The diff in my car is stock I put in the Parts By Max solid diff and riser bushing kit. The front two bushings are solid aluminium and the back two were replaced with weld in steel plates provided in the kit. I also have the solid rear subframe riser bushings from PBM. You can hear the gear whine being transferred into the structure of the car. Later I think I will go with a Ford 8.8 if I break the stock unit.

I have nothing done to the rear diff. leaving it alone. Seeing how long it will last.

I like that we have stock, firmer than stock, and solid mounts. We will all be able to see how each one does over time.

I went with a Nissan r230 rear diff. They seem to be pretty bullet proof. I’ve also got a Quaife upgraded LSD in there as well with DSS Pro axles.
My diff is solid mounted to the subframe but the subframe is mounted to the car with the oem bushings. I have a set of whiteline bushings for it, but it takes quite some time to get the bushings out of the crossmember so I haven’t bothered with them yet. |

have you launched it on radials? |

OE diff is the same unit that was in the Mk4 Supra with the exception of a gearing change.
Should be pretty damn bulletproof already. |
I have the full blown 8.8, white line bushings and some other bushings ready to go in.

These diffs are pretty impressively durable for what it is. From what I have seen, failures come from misalignment due to sloppy mounts. The the factory crush sleeve on the pinion will deform and it all grenades from there. The BRZ also has much smaller pinion bearings then what came in the Supra. Right is Supra pinion bearing a solid pinion spacer, Left is BRZ pinion bearing with crush sleeve http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...16.05%20PM.png |
I've been running a completely stock diff, launching on a trans brake with a 2jz/th400 since I did my swap. Just recently installed a stock frs diff with stock torsen lsd, mk3 Supra pinion bearings, solid pinion spacer and Toyota 3.58 gearset. Only problem I ever had were with axles. Sheared both dss 600hp units in half on a launch. No issues with the dss pro kit

Building the back half of the car, I pulled out the stock unit and installed SPL solid bushings in the subframe and all the SPL arms, the 8.8 is ready to mount up Monday.

Can you show us more pics of the 8.8 diff installed? I have one sitting in my garage and would like more pics of what full blown did with their setup. I was trying to just get the back cover from them but they dont want to part the kit out... probably cause it would make it almost bolt in for us DIY'ers |

I installed most of the parts for the back half of the car today.
Gotta figure out where to mount the resiviors for the shocks still. This kit is beefy....fits very tight but it fits well. Overall I'm impressed with it. I had to grind the knuckles so the larger axles would fit. The front portion of the diff is a solid mount and the mount bosses are offset on the square tube mount. If you mount it backwards the diff won't fit. Let me know if you have specific questions, I changed so many parts today, I can't recall any other installation tips I might have on the diff. https://i.imgur.com/PXjYjJG.jpg Only real complaint is that it didn't come with the drive shaft to diff flange bolts...And more annoyingly, they didn't bead blast the housing...it's a rusty mess that they simply soaked with black paint. Not that big a deal but every time something touches it rust flakes off. https://i.imgur.com/dHBbOQF.jpg https://i.imgur.com/6Y9RMKD.jpg Big axle shafts https://i.imgur.com/0hVPbXY.jpg https://i.imgur.com/oOnWSWa.jpg https://i.imgur.com/9ulc3cm.jpg https://i.imgur.com/MZ6wjOo.jpg |
We have had to clearance the knuckles for every dss pro kit axle outer. You would think they would mention that by now lol

Some simple instructions/tips would have helped too, but if you're experienced enough to take on a swap like this...I guess the little things are no brainers. :bonk:

As for my rear end, I have a solid mounted 8.8 in the car now. Rebuilt w/ 3.55 gears which are a little too tall I think. Might go back down to a 4.10. |
Dear All experts,
My name is Alex, from Malaysia, actually the Borneo side. I’ve just got a used AT GT86 to start a build. Actually my first intended mod to my build is actually shorter final drive. Due to the location I’m at, there’s like only 1 tuner who are familiar with our cars. He told me that I have to get a full kit for example all the shims, bearings, etc (not just ring and pinion) I’ve been lurking around the forum regarding final drive parts. I’ve read some posts tons of times and still do not dare to pull the trigger of getting a full rebuild kit which is meant for Supra Mk3 which is suppose to be indentical to our cars. My question is if the internals/guts for a Supra mk3 read differential is identical to our FRS/GT86? I meant not just the ring and pinions but all the spacers, shims , bearings nuts,etc.. Over here, it’s very hard to source for any parts locally being a third world country. And most parts we have to Import from overseas. So for the final drive there pinion and rings are easier to source however, the other small parts needed is a big problem. As they are just so many small parts to make a proper build. After sometime of reading in the forum and sourcing online, I’m looking at this rebuild kit from drift motion to go along with a 4.56 on an A/T 86 for my build. As for 4.56 ratio is due to my build is actually heading towards a SC kit in the future. http://www.driftmotion.com/DM-MK3-29...t-p/dm3462.htm Would this be compatible with our stock GT86/FRS carrier? Looking forward to all your experts replies. Many thanks in advance. Rgds, Alex |
