Help! Oil filter isn't coming off smoothly

Any tips? I'm trying with two hands to try n remove the oil filter and it won't budge. I'm twisting it counter clockwise of course.

If you have advice plz post it ASAP. Thanx

simpleisbest 07-18-2012 10:29 PM

Mine was tight too. I used a belt type oil wrench to break it loose. Came right off.

|-Goku-| 07-18-2012 10:30 PM

My recommendation is to get an oil filter wrench.

ShoGun 07-18-2012 10:30 PM

And if I don't have a wrench that size?

|-Goku-| 07-18-2012 10:31 PM

You can either keep trying to get it off with your hands, or break down and go to walmart or an auto store, and get one.

1. Find a flat head screwdriver.
2. Stab screwdriver through oil filter horizontally.
3. Use penetrated screwdriver to twist the filter off.
4. ...................
5. Profit.

Do you have like a tongue/groove pliers that you can use to grip the oil filter?

ShoGun 07-18-2012 10:37 PM

All pliers and wrenches are too small. Trying rubber bands for grip. My hands are killing me

This. Just puncture it with something and then use that something as leverage.

chate 07-18-2012 10:59 PM

This is gonna get messy. Save yourself the trouble and get a filter wrench

|-Goku-| 07-18-2012 11:03 PM

^Agreed!

Get a belt type. It fits all sizes.
Or I suppose you could try to make a homemade one if your in an emergency.

GL!!!

I had to crank on mine for several minutes. I think in the end I used really sticky/grippy gloves that had been heated to make them even grippier, then I gave it a few good yanks, ended up moving the intake box out of the way to get a lower/more stable hold on it. Finally came loose. Subaru must have used something stupid-powerful to get that damn thing on there so tight.

ShoGun 07-18-2012 11:58 PM

Okay. Got it off. For future reference and for anyone who is having brz oil filter stuck issues with no wrench handy..... Use sandpaper

Bam!

Thanks everyone!

Draco-REX 07-19-2012 05:49 PM

I just drive a screwdriver into it and lever it off.

As for putting the filter back on, do not use any tools. Wet the gasket with oil and then spin it on until the base touches the block. Then turn it 1/2 turn. Never had a filter leak using this method, and they come off in my hand every time.

This is always my last resort since things can get messy.

Tainen 07-19-2012 08:40 PM

rubber strap wrench, super useful tool for lots of things. I prefer it to the filter wrench, as that only has one real use, and only once in a blue moon when you have a stuck on filter.

bought a filter wrench and couldnt get enough room to loosen the filter. best solution, wrap a leather belt around the filter and pull the belt off as if you were starting and old manual start engine. worked great! on a side note i used a Mobil one filter to replace the oem, its smaller in diameter than the oem, is that normal or did i get the wrong one? still threaded on fine.

Was it taller?

Not a problem with this car. Even with the drain-back valve the oil will drain through the filter element and back into the engine in a couple minutes. Usually by the time you've got the oil drained there's almost nothing left. When I used the screwdriver trick on mine there was no mess.

garf 09-20-2012 05:26 PM

it was slightly taller. oriellys looked up my car on their system to find the filter so i assumed it was correct. anyone know the filter number by chance? :D

DYOLF26 09-20-2012 05:41 PM

I work at a toyota dealership and all the guys have a claw type universal oil filter wrench from craftsman. it's by far the best one i've used. Has gotten off every canister oil filter i've ever run into. They are only $12. Any place that carries craftsman tools should have it.

Had some trouble myself, but just wrapped some painter's tape on it which gave me a lot more grip, and off it came.

 I had to do that once! It does work, messy but works.

empower-auto 09-20-2012 06:14 PM

If you need to find a way to remove the filter I recommend you look up Chopper Read on YouTube.

Also, if you remove your oil-filler car you can get a better grip on the filter.

Or... Just use your belt like a strap wrench!

Attachment 15714

Just make sure the neighbors aren't watching when you take it off....

This. Seems violent, until you do it. There is nothing you need to worry about damaging with this method. Just use a hammer and pound the screwdriver through slowly. or get an oil filter wrench

Turbowned 09-20-2012 07:58 PM

If you do the screwdriver method, just make sure you're at least halfway up on the filter or else you could damage the threaded boss for the filter if you hit it.

HATED1 09-20-2012 08:18 PM

go clockwise a little first, then counter. Worked for me.

zoomzoomers 09-20-2012 08:53 PM

Don't ask me how I know, but try this if you get in a pinch. Get yourself a NEW non-lubricated condom. Carefully apply it to the filter (make sure your neighbors ARE watching) and twist away. For truely "tough ones" DO it while wearing some dishwashing rubber gloves. Works like a charm. :bonk:

Ha, that's a new twist on, ''Rub one off''.

JDMenrique 09-30-2012 01:51 PM

Dude... chanellocks. I personally would be stabbing anything. Sounds right in theory but i wouldnt wanna risk having the screw driver slide and hitting paint. Ive seen weirder shit.

I was able to get mine off using one of those thick rubber bands from my news paper while wearing some mechanics gloves, same idea, with less weird looks, hehe

Mikeez 11-17-2015 07:30 PM

I got a filter wrench from fram! But no space to grip?.. what shall I do

stugray 11-17-2015 07:59 PM

The OP found the solution that has worked every time for me.

Use a piece of sandpaper for grip.

I need a solution for me

ZionsWrath 11-17-2015 10:37 PM

If you really can't get it take to dealer for a $20 (or wahtever the going rate is) oil change special

Personally I know from past experience the first oil filter from the factory is like super glued on. I had dealer do my first change when they installed my spoiler. Did all my own since, never had a problem taking the filter off with my hand.

I'll try again...

Have you tried Sandpaper?
I have never found an oil filter that I couldnt remove with a piece of sandpaper used to get a better grip.
