Broken Trunk Emergency exit handle

1 Attachment(s)
I popped my trunk the other day and I found this on the carpet trunk floor. It looks like the steel cable broke off. I have not seen or heard of this issue before. Just an heads up.
Car has 19K miles, 2013.

I will see if I can fix it with fishing line.

Tcoat 07-24-2017 09:26 AM

Leave it off as a weight reduction.
Just don't lock people in the trunk though.

OND 07-24-2017 11:13 AM

If I have someone in my trunk, I dont want them to get out.

I think you are better off.

extrashaky 07-24-2017 11:22 AM

You probably got it caught on something in your trunk and pulled it off when you opened it. I opened my trunk one day after a grocery run to find a grocery bag hanging from that handle.

@USMC think of the new career opportunity that just opened up for you!

I have always found that if you tape the wrists to the ankles they can not get to the handle anyway.

Ummmmm.... I mean in theory.

Shinigami301 07-24-2017 12:10 PM

There is a creepy line, and I think you just might have crossed it. Just saying'.

;)

Happened to my car at about 30k miles. It's now in the spare tire well if and when I feel like repairing it.

WRBrzRX 07-24-2017 01:47 PM

In case you throw another hooker in the back you should know they can still pull the rear seat straps. You need to "break" those off too.

Happened to me too. My backpack caught it and yanked it off. I just leave the handle in the trunk, no real interest in getting it fixed.

You have to wonder exactly what chain of events happened to make them put it in there in the first place!

Well naturally but still who said "Hey I have an idea that will save half a dozen people".
Was there a lawsuit against a manufacturer? A high profile crime/incident? A huge jump in locked in the trunk stats? They just ran out of real issues to resolve?
It just seems like a weird requirement.

I'm sure some do-gooder pushed it thru. Hey, we banned baby cribs here because 6 kids died over 60 years.

Well there we go.
Now, probably 99.898989898% of the people at risk of kidnapping have no idea it is in there but at least they can say they tried. Not to mention if I am out to kidnap somebody I am damn sure it isn't functioning anyway.

WRBrzRX 07-24-2017 07:04 PM

The really weird thing is how many ways to get out of the trunk there are. On top of the key fob, there's the handle OP broke, the rear seat straps and a small button as well. All this yet no manual keyed entry from outside. Someone at Subaru had a bad experience in a trunk.

The button in the trunk only turns the button on the dash on/off, and the key slot for the trunk is next to the license plate lights facing down.

WRBrzRX 07-24-2017 07:25 PM

trunk button turns on/off key fob but I never noticed key slot, will check it out!

Spuds 07-24-2017 07:33 PM

Bet we all (USA at least) get a safety recall notice for this at some point...

fitcious 07-24-2017 08:01 PM

mine broke off too - 2013, 40k. The cable snapped. I brought it to dealer and they are fixing it due to my extended warranty.

I think this breaks because the position where this tab goes into is not as secure as it should be...more often than not, when i open the trunk, i see the latch dangling and I need to fit it back into the slot. This might cause the latch to catch onto misc. items in your trunk

Trunk button turns off all remote access to the trunk and the valet key will not work in the mechanical lock. It is so you can park at hotels and casinos without the guy parking your car finding your kidnap victim in the trunk.

Yep, only way to open after you press the button in the trunk and shut it is with the key.

I am surprised at the number of people that don't realise there is a key hole up under there though.

daniloneil8 09-05-2022 07:32 PM

So, did you ever fix it?
