FT86 weight speculation anyone?

Anyone care to take some educated guesses? Anyone think this thing will be able to stay under 3,000 pounds?

With a regular non-turbo 2.0L this thing will have to stay under 3,000 pounds to have a nice power/weight ratio and make it the lighweight compact sports car Toyota is going after.

86Fan 10-11-2009 03:09 PM

This car should be definetly under 3,000 or at least right at that figure based on the prototype measurements. The car is a hair longer and wider but slighty shorter than a S2000. However, roadsters in general are heavier than their coupe counterparts so the FT has a good chance in staying under 3k. I'm hoping for around 12:1 power-to-weight ratio for a car that is going to cost about $20000.

FT-MH 10-11-2009 03:22 PM

I think this car would be around the 3000 lb mark. It has to have modern safety equipment of any 2010 mass market car and that kind of equipment usually gets a car up to the 3000lb mark by default.

casualsurfer 10-11-2009 04:39 PM

If the Porsche Cayman S can pull off 2965lbs with a flat 6, heavy cast wheels, and 2 x 55lbs powered seats using a host of traditional, non-composite materials, the FT86 with lighter (non-powered, non-leather) seats, smaller wheels, and a lighter flat 4 should be able to pull it off easily and still meet the safety standards. I believe it's also smaller than the Cayman S, so technically it is possible.

Jordo! 10-11-2009 07:14 PM

If they stay true to their orignal vision, it should weigh in around 2600 -2700 lbs.

What's the original version? 2600-2700 would be ABSOLUTELY AMAZING

Matt 10-11-2009 07:52 PM

I'm going to guess ~2,800lbs. With all the safety regulations manufacturers are faced with nowadays, I think it will be an extremely difficult task to get it to 2,600-2,700 pounds.

I'd be happy with 2800 pounds even. Even the Genesis 2.0T is 3294 pounds and the 3.8 is 3389 pounds. What's fun about a sports car that's nearly 3500 pounds?!

Vision, not version :p

Well, same idea, I guess... :)

According to 7tune, Toyota was originally aiming for 1100 kg, or 2420 lbs, but that was back when they were looking at a 1.5 motor. With a 2.0 engine, safety features, etc., I figure a good 200 - 300 lbs may have gotten tacked on.

Still, that would be pretty light, and would be well matched to a ~200 bhp motor (as a starting point, anyway).

Details here:

BanningFT 10-12-2009 10:05 AM

If they can keep the FT under 2800K, I will be definitely buying this car as a second vehicle.

Mouse 10-12-2009 10:18 AM

I personally think that 2600 is very do-able. Look at the current MX-5 they weigh in at 2500 with a 2.0 and 6-speed gearbox. The PRHT only adds about 75 pounds to that.

As far as pricing goes. It has to start at under $20,000.00. I don't think it would be wise for toyota to price it with the genesis.

dante 10-12-2009 11:16 AM

I'll throw my estimate in, which will be 2600-2700lbs and start at $21,995. I own a tC and it's 2950lbs with 106" wheelbase, 12" longer overall length, heavy reclining rear seats, glass roof/sunroof, and a 2.4l engine. Yes, adding RWD to the package will increase the weight somewhat, but hopefully it won't be enough to offset the all of the other things I posted about above...

The measurements are a bit off but weighing around 2600 lbs could be realistic.

White Comet 10-13-2009 02:24 AM

I just hope the safety nazi... er, I mean nannies don't completely ruin the weight of this car so it comes out bloated. And for a car this small, bloated, imho, would be anything more than 2800 lbs (though I'd really like to see something under 2600 lbs, but I think that's just wishful thinking).

BALLIN'_707 10-13-2009 04:00 PM

I hope it stays under 2800 lbs... if its around 2600 lbs that would be great.. im used to my little like 2300 lbs eight six.....

RadOnc 10-14-2009 12:27 AM

I dont see how this car will be above 2600-2800 lbs, they would have to purposely put bricks in the trunk in order to get it that heavy. This is a really small car thats purpose built as a coupe with a 4 cyl engine. What could possible be in there to make it heavy?? I celica GT-S I believe only weighed like 2500lbs

^^^ Yep.

Black FT-86 10-14-2009 10:00 AM

The early rumor / speculation / info from Best Car Plus magazine (which is floating around everywhere else but here) was that the weight was going to be <1000kgs and it was using a 120hp 1.5 2NZ-FE. This original plan was to keep the price <$12,500.

I'd hope they would give us a more powerful engine, even if that meant increasing weight to 1100-1300 and the price to $18-25k. If not, this won't be much of an upgrade over my NA miata. I guess it'll have a 6-speed, so 75mph on the freeway shouldn't require 4000rpm, so that'll be a nice upgrade!

Really -- I never heard that

The first I heard was was from 7tune: 1100 kg as a target weight, a Subie 1.5 motor and a price target of right around $20,000.

That's still pretty close to what they're developing today...

86Fan 10-14-2009 06:15 PM

Well the Toyota press release for the concept expliclity stated a 2L boxer... would be a huge disappointment if they downgraded.

Whatever engine they end up using I hope it keeps that 7500rpm redline seen in the concept photos!

You know I think Toyota can do it. I know its getting harder for modern cars to stay light because of all the safety requirements but it's not like theres not cars out there that still weigh 2300 pounds. Toyota makes one actually - the yaris. And I bet if you looked up the yaris' dimensions it'd probably be longer and definitely taller than the concept FT-86.

OldSkoolToys 10-15-2009 05:38 AM

The AE86 is posted, factory in the U.S., around 2300lbs.

The dimensions of the FT-86, so far, are extremely similar (almost exact) to that of the AE86, with it actually being an overall shorter vehicle, yet slightly wider.

Take into consideration lighter materials on the mechanicals (all aluminum engine, compared to cast Iron/aluminum 4A-GE, etc.)

Take into consideration stricter safety requirements...

Eh, I'd say ~2600lbs

2800 is really pushing it...

The pictures don't do justice to the size of this car, it literally will be as small as your current AE86 (if you're lucky enough to own one:D).

Edit: For those who are picky about the weight, just do what I'm gonna do: Baseline model in terms of luxaries without skimping on the performance. If I can get all the performance goodies without power windows, locks, sunroof, GPS gizmos, etc., then I'll be as happy as can be.

That's a good point, we've never actually seen a person or another car next to the FT-86 for a basis of comparison.

I'll be doing the same in getting as stripped down a version as possible amenities wise. If Toyota is truly aiming this car at enthusiasts, they will offer a base version with very little fluff and other versions with fancier creature comforts.

It's about the same size as a S2K -- that's pretty fvcking small :D

Shadowsong6 10-15-2009 10:54 PM

Isn't it almost identical in size to a 370z?

Just go stand next to/sit in one of those, and you'll get a pretty good idea.

Black FT-86 10-16-2009 10:29 AM

My BestCar quote above was from a good while ago, so I think they've changed their plans since then to what we're seeing now. It sounds like the price is up, but hopefully not more than DOUBLE what they were aming at! Someone was saying $30,000, but the quote from the man in charge said something like "This car won't sell if it's $30,000," so I really doubt they're trying to compete with the 370z's higher-priced market share. Also, I'm hoping that they really stuck to their weight goal, despite all the changes made to the concept along the way.

The guy with the white shirt isn't too far bent over, and the roofline is just above his waist - that's a good sign. I'm guessing the picture was taken in Japan - and further guessing he's of Japanese descent, therefore he may not be as tall as the avg american male (5' 10"). Meaning... it'll be good and low in the land of giant SUVs.

Anyone else notice the slight 'swan' effect the doors have? I know Aston Martin's have a similar effect where the doors don't swing open 100% horizontally, but actually angle up away from the ground a bit. Interesting.

scape 10-17-2009 12:21 AM

seeing how my yaris hb is around 2300lbs, my hope is the ft will be 2600 or less

JDMinc 10-18-2009 02:54 PM

A yaris is smaller right?

MTD 10-18-2009 03:40 PM

Well, considering that my 07 Civic Si is about 2800lbs and my 07 Mini Cooper is about 2500lbs and that the FT86 is a little smaller then the Si but a little bigger then the Mini... The FT86 should weight no more then 2700lbs.

My Si is a decent performing and fun car for a FWD economy based sporty car, so Im guessing/hoping that a slightly lighter FT86 with about the same hp/tq specifications would be even more fun to drive.

You forgot to mention the fact that your car wouldn't be wrong wheel drive anymore.

MTD 10-18-2009 06:20 PM

Yes, I did. The Si is still an excellent handling car for a FWD. Its been about 15 years since Ive had a RWD car, so it will be a nice change if I get an FT.

Same here. My last RWD was a '79 Firebird with a 6.6 liter engine. It would just go sideways in the rain. Snow and ice were terrifying :D

ichitaka05 10-18-2009 10:35 PM

Hm... My guess is around 2700~2750ish.
I own '00 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS (coupe) and it weight around 2800ish... so I don't see why it gotta weight more than my RS.

Here's comparison between my RS spec, friend's AP1 & 086A spec I read in 7tune.com
Oh and I've convert the measurements to Inches instead of mm, hope you don't mind.

Wheelbase
RS - 99.2
S2 - 94.5
FT - 97.2

Overall Length
RS - 172.2
S2 - 162.2
FT - 165.4

Width
RS - 67.1
S2 - 68.9
FT - 68.9

So I from this spec, I'm just guessing it'll be around 2700~2750ish.

for weight speculation- i mapped an overlay of the yaris onto the ft86; here's what it looks like.

yaris: 2300lbs, 1.3, 1.5, 1.8L i4
i'm pretty sure after looking at this the car couldn't weigh more than 2600, maybe it will even be closer to 2500 lbs...

Small indeed - the S2000 comes in @ ~2800 lbs (AP1). I was a little curious as to what made the AP1 slightly on the heavier side despite its small size. Probably safety features, modern technology, etc.

AP1 = S2K chassis? If so, it's probably the lack of a roof. No roof means more body structural support, adding weight.

The convertable version of every car is pretty much always heavier than it's coupe counterpart.

Yep -- 2600 - 2700 lbs sounds about right.
